Bach - WTC I Prelude and fugue no. 12 in F minor BWV 857 - Dirksen | Netherlands Bach Society

  • The Prelude and fugue in F minor, performed by Pieter Dirksen for All of Bach, has a dark character. Often the preludes and fugues in the Wohltemperirte Clavier are opposite in character. However, not in this case. The melancholy atmosphere is already firmly established in the prelude, and it remains throughout.

      Unfortunately I sometimes get the same feeling. Theres incredibly small differences in pianoforte recordings, everyone plays in the same beautiful but mechanical and tedious manner, and extremely few really take advantage of the expressive potential of the piano, without it becoming romantic. It's like they copy harpsichord players without bringing out the expressiveness that are in the music, so you might as well listen to harpsichord and organ. I sometimes search for piano recordings of Bach works I know well, but all I usually get is someone trying to play like a harpsichord, just too fast

      Tatiana Nikolayeva, Rosalyn Tureck, Emil Gilels are all pianists who play Bach on the modern piano and make it sound perfect without over romanticizing their interpretations. They also don't play too fast most of the times. Nowaways its become harder to find "slower" Bach on modern piano, but there's a looot of excellent recordings from the 20th century

      @The Red Pill Thank you for your concern. I'm aware of the recent studies that claim that there is no safe limit. But another side to this is that there is evidence that "Light to moderate drinking is linked to a reduced risk of heart disease". Drinking alcohol in moderation appears to reduce insulin resistance, fighting the main symptoms of diabetes. In fact, red wine is linked to more health benefits than any other alcoholic beverage
      I had about 1 and 1/2 glass's of red wine last night over a 3 hour period and this was my first drink in about 6 days. I have seen what alcohol can do and for some people and it is very destructive. But for me - I think I have an ok balance with the so called toxin in my life. Again thank you for your concern.

    An impeccable performance and a very pleasant harpsichord tone, though the range is somewhat narrow - G-D instead of "standard" F-F . This makes it impossible to perform on this instrument the works of CPE Bach (who used the upper F in almost every keyboard piece of his). On the other hand, both volumes of WTC with all their wealth of various moods and forms strictly fit into 4 octaves, allowing to perform this cycle even on the most humble of instruments. An amazing feat only a genius could create.

    • @herrickinman9303
      @herrickinman9303 Рік тому

      F-F was surely not "standard" in Bach's time. If F-F was standard, then why did Bach have to transpose his harpsichord arrangements of his own string concertos down a whole step for performance at the Leipzig Collegium Musicum concerts in the 1730s? Bach ran a harpsichord rental business; if F-F was standard, surely he must have several F-F harpsichords he could have used for the concerts. While there are some Bach keyboard works that go below the great C, none go above c3 (i.e., 2 octaves above middle c).

    • @VitaliyGR
      @VitaliyGR Рік тому

      @@herrickinman9303 "The traditional pitch range for a 5-octave instrument is F1-F6 (FF-f‴)", that's what Wiki says. This applies at least to French instruments - looking at the scores of Rameau and Couperin and many other French we see that they loved the rumble of low bass :^) Transpositions are an interesting issue that could be connected to temperation and tuning pitch - Bach's famous equal temperation did not become THE standard all at once. Handel, for example, had his reasons to reject it (so with him we see only tonalities not exceeding 4 sharps or flats). So we might say that F-F was the standard compass for big concert instruments (even Mozart did not go beyond that range in his concerti) and G-D for most harpsichords likely to be found at home, typical for Handel's pieces.

Many piano lovres play - or at lesat try to play- WT2, with eloquent prelude, its parallel sixths and play betwwen the two hands, na d its quite exuberant fugue which looks like a fugue thet Mozart will wtrite later on for strings or two pianos the theme is qiute typical of many fugues in minor mode, linking a perfect minor chord to a dyminished seventh one), ans the intimacy and total interiority of this prelude and fugue here in WT1 !

    • @syourke3
      @syourke3 4 роки тому +5

      DAOFB This music is very effective on harpsichord and organ because it does not require dynamic range at all. It’s multilinear music. The intricacy of the musical pattern requires only two dimensions: pitch and time. It does not require dynamic contrast and dynamic variation to be effective. A piano adds a third dimension - dynamic range, very soft to very loud - which gives music a sense of depth, but because the voices in this music are all of equal value, dynamic contrast is unnecessary.
