Incredible to see and listen to a man who survived so many battles, which during those years, day after day, took flight to fight against an insulting enemy numerical superiority and one with that emerge victorious! that's why they are the best pilots in history, my greatest respect to you Mr. Reschke, Rip!

Makes sense, a quick first turn by the Mustang due to lighter stick forces, but once speed dropped the 109 turned significantly tighter, just as confirmed by pilots who've flown both. Even the 190 could turn better than the Mustang according most of the experienced 190 pilots, esp. at low altitudes.

I suspect we are seeing survivor bias. Reschke was exceptionally skilled and he lived because he was better than most German or Allied pilots and could get more out of an aircraft. A Fw 190D-9 with the high pressure water injection (not the low pressure version) at a narrow range of altitudes could probably match the Mustang. The Mustangs low wing loading and superb aerodynamics are hard to beat along with the two stage merlin. The Fw 190 D12/D13 with Jumo 213EB was expected to do 488 mph.

So, in modern terms, the P-51 was superior in the 1-turn, or angles fight; while the Bf.109 was superior in the 2-turn, or rate fight. The P-51 pilot would attempt to turn nose-to-nose, engaging in a scissors maneuver, until the 109 got kicked out in front. Keeping up speed would enhance his advantage, due to the high stick forces on the 109 at higher speeds. The 109 pilot would turn nose to tail to get into a pursuit curve, trying to get the P-51 to bleed off energy, which would give a further advantage to the 109, whose stall speed was lower, due to its leading edge slats. But to do this, the 109 pilot had to fly his plane right on the ragged edge of the envelope, and by 1944, there weren't many German pilots who could do that.

@@StuartKoehl Yes. Lag pursuit and higher rate of turn versus lead pursuit and smaller radius of turn. Depending on the comparative performance of the airplanes, it is often better to fly a larger radius at a higher speed to retain energy for a higher rate of turn then use that retained energy to pull lead only to gain a good firing position.

Many People might not know this but, German fighter Pilots after the War went back to civilian life, and because of the War the hardship endured by all Germans was severe, in fact civilians chastised the Pilots because they didn’t shoot down all the Bombers!, so, there was no hero warship, respect, all for something they had no control over, maybe some should read “ A higher call” by Adam Makos/ Larry Alexander, in there you’ll read all of what these brave guys went through after the War.

Peter Cavellini what you are stating is correct but the sad truth was that the Luftwaffe was simply overwhelmed by sheer allied superiority, lack of fuel and expert pilots but it is also because of wrong decisions like producing the He 177 until early 1944 eating enormous precious resources of precious alloys, labor instead of producing more fighters since early 1943 or even before to defend Germany and much needed oil refineries and of course factories and it's cities with it's population. Maybe revamping up the production of fighters by a big margin would only make the war last longer but surely it would have made things much more difficult for the allies...

Of course, the Merlin was a very powerful engine, due to using higher octane gas an multi stage super charger, however:
      1. The finish in the production of the Mustang was unique
      2. The use of the laminar profile of the wing
      caused lower drag
      3. The jet cooler at the bottom of the fuselage of the Mustang, it was a German patent
from the German Aircraft designer "Hugo Junkers" from the 1920 s
That all significantly reduced air resistance or drag, (Sorry for my bad English ! )
This led to high cruising speeds BUT only in straight flight !
With larger Ca- values, i.e. "Angles of attack" to the wing profile, this advantage of the laminar profile was lost again !
One also speaks of the so-called "Laminar dent"
in the Ca - Cw diagram.
By the way, the Me 109 K4 and K6 had much better flight performance than the Mustang at the end of the war, her climbing rate was unmatched by allied fighters.
It is an incredible engineering feat what potential the Me 109 still had.
However, also using nitrous oxide and MW 50 injection.
And a lst word, I have respect for all aircraft manufacturers all over the world, they all did great things in airplane construction.
Never forget an aircraft is ALWAYS a compromise, there is no ideal aircraft.

@@DannyBoy777777 Well I have other numbers because you have to be careful whether the planes had full set-up weight or only half a tank filling.
      Comparability is then difficult.
The Tempest with its 24 cylinder H engine was also very strong, but it was also heavy.
Then it depends on the performance weight.
But what is it, then I call the Ta 152 as a high-altitude fighter by Professor KurtTank.
Be happy and grateful for Edgar Schmued!

I tried a translation. Don't judge too hard, It is a rather free translation to catch the meanings of his statements instead of presenting a meniculous translation of the phrases:
Q: How were the odds shooting down a Mustang (P51 D) with a TA or an 190?
WR: Well, how to say? I think every single (pilot) will have a different opinion on that.
But to be clear, the Mustang was good (capable). You must not underestimate her.
She was fast, agile, just good.
She had one big advantage against every single of our…
Well, I haven't had a dogfight against a Mustang with the TA anymore. A pity. In hindsight I regret not having a direct comparison. But with the 109 / 190 I had plenty of dogfights with the Mustang.
The Mustang was capable of making a very quick first turn, i.e. the initial turn.
It happened that (inaudible) she was already almost behind you. Many (German) pilots lost their nerves and dived away, which finished them right away anyway.
But if you kept on turning, you got her eventually.
Q: Then you got her eventually?
WR: Then you got her eventually. And if you knew that, and all the old hands knew that, they managed to…
    Q: With the 109 (ME 109)?
WR: With the 109, and also with the 190. With the 190 it's been even easier, because the Messer… 109… well, if you haven't had the muscles, your arms got tired. She (the ME 109) had a kind of a steering resistance (Steuerdruck = steering pressure). Sometimes you had to pull with both hands. You've got tired.
    Q: (inaudible)
WR: No, that worked fine with both / two.
I mean, she was good indeed (the Mustang). But… that doesn't mean you need to be inadvertily…
I'd say, the biggest threat was the overwhelming number. That's it.
A single one alone… you don't need to be frightened of a Mustang.
(WR appear to consider this might sound like boasting)
(with a calming tone) I'm just telling this out of my own experience.
But certainly… they were always like 10 or occasionally 20 of them, that was an overwhelming force. That was the dreadful.
If you seeked one of ours… there was no one… But Mustangs were always there. You had plenty of them around you.

The Luftwaffe is spread out over Russia/Eastern front, Germany home defense, Western front, Italian front and their being bomb daily plus they dont rotate their pilots out to train younger ones, whose training became worse and worse. Spread thin versus mounting numbers and yes WW2 was definitely a war of attrition.
Easier to teach a man to shoot a rifle than how to fly a world standard fighter and perform aerial acrobatics and to shoot from it.

Interesting remarks re numbers. That's pretty much my experience from years and years of online MP flight-simming flying almost exclusively LW-planes. When you're seriously outnumbered, it doesn't really matter how good you are or how good your plane is. If you commit to the fight with anything but high speed dives/slashing attacks, you'll probably get shot down. Bleed off just a little too much E and one of these guys will latch onto you and kill you.
Also interesting to hear his thoughts on the P-51's turn rate and initial turn vs sustained turns. I've yet to find a sim where a 190 (especially A-series 190s) can out-turn a P-51. Perhaps DCS models them like this, but I don't own the A-8 and haven't flown my D-9 in that game all that often.
