Why is it that as soon as you put gloves and a helmet on someone they lose all technique and the understanding of the system of PTK?

People need to get over with the whole "if it was a real blade it would be over" bs. Sparring exposes an individual's ability to perform under pressure. Having the freedom to maul with force brings out the realism that would occur during a fight or flight situation where lives are in the line. Point fighting doesn't do that.
FMA sparring should include this type of training on a daily basis flat out and on other days sharp shooting sparring to be technical on the targets. Also notice how all the fancy flowery tapping and angles etc fly out the window.... because that never happen under pressure for example, this video.
Not taking away FMA's effectiveness but the proof is in the pudding. The tapping and fancy angles and long string of attacks is good for being artistic and killing time while developing creative attacks but just like in boxing, it's all basic techniques and tactics. Hit hard first, move, and don't get hit. Also notice how important grappling is. That osotogari demoralized him as well as that rear naked choke. Proof that jujitsu/Judo, the stuff samurai used was effective at close quarters.

great brave men with respect! IF that was the sword fight the shorter guy could win the first buckle or even the later encounter like. in cockfighting on Filipino sabongero's term salto always on the upper hand..

romualdo movilla the shorter guy doesn’t know buno. He lacks the counter grappling aspects of ARNIS aka guitar grip to reverse striking innorder to disengage.

Hard sparring is great, but what is the ultimate objective? The smaller guy cracked the bigger guy square on the forehead resulting in the disarm. The big guy then comes in for the takedown. If we are talking about the realism of combat, the big guy would be toast. They should have reset at that point. Why not have no helmet at all and see who is the real deal? Just my 2 cents. Pugay!
