Saw it and loved it. Less action but Denzel is pushing 70 so I get it. What is lacking in action is made up for in character and motive building. Extremely well made. I fear a large percentage of people who see it will down it because there aren't explosions and gunfights every minute. Actually sad this is the last one. Wish Bob would mentor a successor for more films.
This trilogy being described as really violent reminds me a lot of _Man on Fire_ even regardless of Dakota Fanning. Denzel is practically a slasher villain in that.
There was a fan theory that the equalizer movies are actually sequels to man on fire. I was hoping they would make it reality. Like just a quick line. Like when someone asks him who he is. He could say, "Some call me Robert others creasy. " Something subtle like that.
That is why I also love this franchise because he is so unknown and underrated and unassuming, if people know about him that would defeat the whole premise of the underdog surprising and getting the upper hand because the bad guys never see it coming so they can’t prepare.
Him being unrecognized is part of his story. Dakota is now the heir apparent - why? Because she is so smart. McCall has a full but unknown backstory that has to do with him being unknown. Not 007, not Patrick Ryan, not The Jackel. How is he unknown? We can assume because, like Bourne, he was produced. McCall was produced to be unknown. This is an interesting part of this franchise - He is very smart, he has a conscience, he was well trained, and as he worked he had no identity - and, having no identity, his character IS ABLE to leave the job! Wick also tries to leave. But a zillion people recognize him. So no-go. On top of all of that, 3 really hits this point - how do you sneak into a small town in Italy as the Only Black Guy Around? This aspect does play a role in the plot in a few ways. "Three weeks ago..." This helps build another theme - actually a really big concept in this series - right time right place...
I have to say Denzel's performance in this film was frightening. Seeing McCall exhibit even more violent unhinged behavior had me on the edge of my seat. He was at his most terrifying during the final sequence of the film in my opinion. It gave me the perspective of a horror monster similar to say Michael or Jason. Then again Denzel is never in a bad film. He can do no wrong in my opinion.
oh man when he sang Blood ... wow chills ... DW need no action to be violent, n we spent over 1 hour with the people of the town so it explains why he was so violent in the end.
Saw it today in theater. I have seen 1 and 2 yesterday. I really like the trilogy, and this third movie does it again. Denzel Washington is such a charming and charismatic person, and it shines trough in McCall. What most movies in this genre are missing, but this series has, is a moral compass. McCall is skilled, but also very wise, compassionate and helpful. This is what makes these movies tick.
I love the way they humanised his character. You feel him falling in love with the location (which was stunning) and the community and their culture. That was my favourite aspect of the movie.
I actually enjoyed this more than the second one. The setting was gorgeous and the side characters were so likable and sweet. Sad that Denzel won’t be doing any more Equalizer movies but I’m glad to have watched all three.
Saw this in IMAX Dolby7.1 today - some takeaways 1. Denzel is still just so amazing to watch and I hope he never ever stops acting ever!!! 2. Fuqua Direction is top notch wrt camera placement. 3. Italy shots are stunning, movie characters and dialogues are more in depth than 1 and 2 ( i love 1 the most ). 4. The villians seemed easy peasy types unlike earlier movies 😅 5. Just wanted Dakota to say “ Mr. Creasy “ once 😅. Stunning to see them in one frame and still reminded me of “ Pita “ 😢. Just go out and grab some popcorn n enjoy 🎉🎉🎉 Ps : shoutout to Chris for the Tshirt
Denzel Washington and Antoine Faqua have a Brilliant Timeless Trilogy Mcall did face death he got shot in the spine Recovered and handled the Italian mob Effortlessly
What made this movie fun for me was "they don't know he's that dangerous" vibe. And my god is he dangerous lmao. I jumped back in my seat several times by how violent some of the Mafia died (and holy hell do I love it). 9/10 movie for me And I gotta go on vacation in that little town sometime, MAN that coastal village is beautiful
There is a more realistic movie (so, less over the top action), which still has the "they don't know he's dangerous vibe". It is a revenge movie, but not the kind that glorifies revenge. It is also about memories, fear, loss, loneliness, and regret. But it has lots of atmosphere, tension, and also some dark humor. Great acting and direction to boot! "The Limey" by Steven Soderbergh, who also directed the first remake of Oceans Eleven to feature George Clooney.
I saw this movie yesterday. I really liked the plot development and action. Nice to see Denzel and Dakota reunited in a movie. Maybe we'll see an Equalizer 4 with the two working together again. I really hope the series continues.
I think the fact that people don't know anything about Robert McCall makes him even more of a bad ass and mysterious. Some brutal baddie kills in this one. The nasty younger brother got it savage in particular.
This film is like a reverse horror flick seen from the eyes of the bad guys. Denzel embodies the intimidation that Steven Segal tried, yet failed to capture. This was achieved through great acting and directing.
Just saw the movie a few hours ago and I was impressed. Part of me being impressed comes from the story taking place in southern Italy, where I lived for two years. I understand Denzel's character wanting peace in that location. I felt the same way he did. Still do. Something about the culture and way of life invokes tranquility. Sure there was less action than the previous two, but it makes up for it with the sheer brutality when it kicks into full gear. Camorra villains were not only believable, but relatable. Young brother living in the shadow of his elder, wanting to prove himself. Older brother wanting full control of his territory and willing to use whatver means to make it happen. I like the call back to Melissa Leo and Bill Pullman having a daughter that followed their footsteps. Denzel helping her made all the sense. I enjoyed seeing the reunion with Dakota Fanning and Denzel. Solid ending to the trilogy and worth a second watch. I typically don't go to the movies anymore due to the unrealistic costs, but I will make exceptions. This one was worth the rule breaking. Antoine Fuqua did his thing closing this saga!
Saw the movie today. It was excellent. People not knowing what he is capable of is what makes the character awesome. The movie was violent where there were violent scenes but the movie was deeper than mere violence. I felt Robert's struggle to having the power to do the right thing, doing the right thing and also regretting the violence. The portrayal of life in Italy was nostalgic. Having seen the first two installments, this one made me cry Yes I cried. Loved this movie, loved the director and loved Denzel Washington. Can't wait to see the 4th installment or the origins of Robert Mc Call.
It was the most challenging for Robert to beat the bad guys in The Equalizer 1 when that big guy injures him and he was left lying on the floor, the security guard then helped him to get up. If Robert didn't get help, he would've been a goner. But in the 2nd and 3rd one it was kind of easy for him to defeat the bad guys, but all the Equalizer movies are still brilliant and very entertaining to watch.
He almost got killed by a kid though in the third one. So he got much better in terms of skills and evasion but got cocky too and turned his back on the kid of a Mafia dude he just killed
Roberto is a stranger in a small town it’s unrealistic for anyone to know who he is. All they know is that he’s a good guy. By the end of the movie he definitely showed everyone who he is. A stranger helping other strangers, an interesting person, etc. we saw two huge moments of weakness in him this film. First at the vineyard and then again in town after the restaurant incident. Honestly, I enjoyed the flawlessness of his actions in this movie. It was nice to see after seeing all the BS in JW3.
It is kind of Spider-Man subway moment…. His identity is revealed, but he got the people’s respect that they will not betray him or reveal his secret at this point.
@@ClinicalDecisionYikesYT That entire Paris sequence was bs. Especially after he jumped out of a 3rd story window landed on a van and then he got up and walked up the stairs. If I’m not mistaken he was knocked down the stairs twice. The fall out the window should’ve paralyzed him but the tumble down multiple flights of stairs definitely should’ve finished him off.
I agreed that this was better than #2 and thought this was the best of all three. While a agree that he appears to lack vulnerability in that no one is really a threat to him, the whole reason behind his presence in the small town in Italy, came from an unlikely threat that is surprising and yet not. I also liked seeing him with Dakota Fanning again (loved Man on Fire). Overall, very entertaining!
I think Man on Fire was alright, very well executed but a bit clichéd. Denzel's acting was perfectly on point there. With the Equalizer movie(s) I found he just keeps repeating the same shtick. I mean, he is still a good actor, and he has great on screen presence, but it seemed too much by-the-numbers to me. There is more to his talent than what this role allows him to show. And if he does not pay attention to this other side, he might get stuck in a rut, being cast as a in-trick-pony, much like Liam Neeson in the Taken franchise. That would be a shame. Man on Fire was more gritty, morally ambiguous. The Equalizer character is shown more like a good guy that can be "switched on" and become a killing machine, then "switch off" again without any problem once the "job is done". It is kind of ridiculous, and only Washington's next to "insane" talent and screen presence (combined with that of the entire film crew) can "sort of" make it work as an "escapist movie", a break from reality. Not sure if I need yet another (third) movie of the same kind, though. (Or fourth, really, if I include Man on Fire.) Him revisiting basically the same role in the very same routines is getting kind of stale by now.
If you put a William Shatner mask on Denzel in this movie he’s basically Michael Myers with these kills. I loved this movie. The original was better but this one was just slightly behind. The reason why I go with the fist being slightly better is because the mystery was there behind his character. Now the audience knows so the mystery is gone and plus the first had that epic tanker explosion. He completely wrecked that organization over $9,800. Also the first one I did feel like he felt a challenge because they had him down bad in that Home Depot. After that scene yeah he’s basically been untouchable.
I also think that the first movie was the best one for those reasons but also because he was forced to work all the way up to the head boss to in a way cut off the snakes head to finally put an end to that mob organization that thought they were invincible.
I think you're right 3 was definitely better than 2 & I like how 3 focused more on the story for a lot of the movie. It was also great to see Dakota back on the big screen & her interactions with Denzel were great & quite humorous. However one of best aspects of this movie was the location. The scenery & the cinematography was amazing. I also thought the build up to the final killing spree was very well done. He doesn't want to get involved but he's slowly dragged into it. This installment came very close to being the best of the 3 (so far) but if it really is the last it was the perfect send off for the character.
This HAS to be better than part 2. Because part 2 had nothing i cared about in it. Didn't care about the villains (who were weak), Didn't care about the goverment bootlicker McCall wanted to avenge. I just didn't care. There was no human interest element to it. This looks to be different. But i wish he was given more powerful and evil villains to go against. Maybe even set him against corrupt parts of the US Government, or SOMETHING.
This franchise is so amazing to me, just an under the radar giant that always opens pretty well and is also a great set of films, unlike say Bays transformers which made mountains of money but are not great. These also being Denzel’s only sequels that he’s ever done really shows how much he loves working with Antione Fuqua ever since Training Day
I always get surprised when I see her these days, like "Holy crap, shes grown up". I'm just a 2 years older than her, but all the films I saw of her kinda cemented the image of her as a child actor im my head. Funny how the mind works.
@@geneticfreak84the parts of the movie with Dakota Fanning in it were the worst. All the movies I saw with her when she was a child were good. I'm not sure she can play the part of an adult convincingly.
I think the Equalizer trilogy is excellent! We saw all three last week and they have wonderful character development and world building - something sadly missing from a lot of movies these days. Great stuff.
The best part of movie for me was that the "kid" got him! Of all the master of villians, there was that kid who got him. The surprised look on his face was priceless performance.
I was genuinely really surprised when I heard a third movie was coming out. I loved the first two, even if I personally found the second movie to be a bit less impactful than the first. I'm glad to hear you personally liked it better than 2! That gets me excited to check this out. I would add John Wick with Robert in the branch of "badass older dudes taking people out when they just want to be left alone" characters. I feel the same giddiness watching any Equalizer action scene as I do watching Keanu Reeves using jiu-jitsu and sambo while shooting people.
I agree that Fuqua is one of the best action film directors, I've liked his films for years. I love the first Equalizer, the second not so much, but I'm looking forward to this one. I don't agree with the analysis in which you say that you would prefer it to be known that it is Robert McCall. No, the character is a man who comes from nowhere unknown who solves the problems and returns to his path. It doesn't make sense to be any other way.
In a good way, I had that thought that this film was like Eat Pray Love... if it was a violent action film. The violence was there, but also the slower paced story of a man falling in love with a community. Which I really liked. I really loved the time they took to make the slower establishment shots of Denzel walking around Italy and of the surroundings themselves. It really emphasizes the connection we need to have to this town that he's saving. And idk, I just love that they took advantage of having such a beautiful scenery
1:55 Don't know if it counts but Denzel Washington is part of the cast for Gladiator 2. 2:24 Probably won't happen but I'd love to see Chris review 'Man on Fire' for the channel especially covering the alternative ending.
You should check out some of the history of the Mafia in Italy, especially the '80s and '90s. They were waaaaaay more violent and distructive than described in ths movie. During those times, Italy was s war zone, not even the highest ranking judges and prosecutors were safe from the Mafia.
Cartoonishly evil? Evil is real. The mafia and cartel, they cut off limbs and heads. They don't mess around, and they have no remorse. Unfortunately, the most unrealistic aspect of these movies is Robert McCall equalizing. In real life, innocent people still get hurt.
I saw it and loved it. Heck, I have enjoyed the entire series. Mr. Washington is a legend and he and Fuqua are another DeNiro/Scorcese. This character and the circumstances of helping people in need has always attracted me to this type of character. I loved the old, RIP, Edward Woodward 80s, CBS show and the current Queen Latifah series on CBS. The Denzel portrayal of McCall reminds me a lot of Clint’s ‘Man w/No Name’ character or his unnamed western ghost figures of High Plains Drifter or Pale Rider, who would come into a corrupt town, place, and be a protector for those who can’t or are unable to protect themselves. A very satisfying trilogy of films. It was good seeing Denzel and Dakota together again on screen. Her inclusion in the series was needed and when you find out who she is, in relation to Robert’s character, it is very satisfying.
I actually think that the perfectness of Denzel adds a unique touch. Majority of movies have the hero go through some sort of struggle to win, but in Equalizer its cake. I've always noticed that about the movies and thought it stood out in a good way.
It takes away all the suspense. It is like watching a documentary on a professional perfectionist doing what he does best. Except that the world shown is way over the top and unrealistic to begin with. Kind of like a John Wick movie, but without all the postcard shots and silly killer hotel franchise company fluff. More gritty. It is the kind of "pointless" no-brains movie with not much of a story that gets all of its value out of HOW the plot is being shown, the pure craftsmanship of the cinematography, the use of sets and settings, a well thought out, well-prepared storyboard/choreography of the action, well executed stunts, and overall the entire camera work, acting, directing, editing in the cutting room, a good sound design and score to suit it all. You also need to get the pacing right, cut out all the fluff, go for the perfect line of efficiency and effectiveness, just as in professional car racing. If one cog in this machinery goes haywire, the whole film will fall apart, because it relies on just that. "Drive" got that right. The last "John Wick" got me bored. Not decided whether Equalizer 3 is worth watching yet.
I think John Wick 2 did these kinds of antagonists best where, even thought they're clearly no match for him, their resources, numbers and approaches can overwhelm the "badass protagonist," for a sense of that tension the movie needs.
I love these movies so much. Man on fire is one of my favorites. My wife insists on seeing every Denzel film that comes out and I always look forward to the equalizer.
As far as story and plot goes, this film is just about as critic proof as it gets. Do you want to see Denzel be a badass and brutally murder bad guys? One ticket, please!
I loved this movie, was surprised by the level of violence; the bit where he stares down the guy as he’s dying was chilling and the end where he’s literally Dancing Death is chef’s kiss👌 I thought Dakota Fanning’s role was largely irrelevant, just a nice Easter egg really but tying her back to Susan was cool. Also like how the franchise itself was clearly put to bed, it felt right. I do wonder how the villagers would have thought of him after though 😂 if he joins the parish council he’d have no arguments at least 🤣
There was an actual jump scare in this film as well! My husband and I startled simultaneously! If you saw it, you know. Actually really enjoyed this so much! What a great afternoon at the movies😊
@@Chris-gw2xgahh, when Dakota is on the phone... and then the shockwave... yeah I was surprised/shocked at that part and I may have jumped out of my seat a little.
Saw it yesterday. Loved it. I've seen the first two many times. It's one of the rare jems we get these days that makes you think about the movie long after it finishes. Awesome trilogy 👌
Just got out of seeing this. Really enjoyed it, I do think they are all enjoyable but still have their flaws. My main issue with 3 is that Dakota Fanning's character should either have been given more to do or just completely taken out of the film as all I can think of her doing in the grand sceme of things was repeating what Mccall told her. That isn't to say she wasn't great and I loved the sit down conversations they had, but those could probably have been done by some of the residents of the town to bring those more to the spotlight.
Yeah, I agree, her character and her colleague’s character both seemed underused. I was expecting them to be pivotal considering the actors. It seems they could have used no name/non-established actors for their parts.
Never forget that this is based on a very gritty and “grim dark” tv show from the 80’s. A lone man, cloaked in darkness, struggling to find the light. In the show there were a few that knew McCall’s history and were genuinely afraid of what would happen if he was let lose. We, the audience never saw the full extent but we knew that when the Equalizer was stepping over that line things were going to get messy
I had a lot of issues with it. The intro heavily implies that his injuries might become a hindrance, but he recovers very quickly simply by walking some steps. Then the CIA is introduced (Dakota Fanning), but that subplot is dropped almost immediately - you never see her again until the last scene. Subsequently, McCall just starts stealth-killing everyone in a mansion, without any real difficulty or challenge. And that was it. That's the movie. At least part 2 still tried to create interesting setpieces, with McCall depending on situational awareness and certain tactics to defeat his former colleagues. But this time around, it felt a little mindless and mind-numbing. I will say the pacing is excellent and the panning shots of the town and environment are beautiful. Other than that, I thought it was an average movie.
I think that this one and the 2nd can compare to the 1st at all. The villain for this one was extremely weak. Even though the head boss for the 1st one wasn't a challenge. It was Nikoli that was amazing in the first 1
Technically the 2nd movie was all about people messing with him knowing exactly what he could do to people -- they saw it every day. It was the epitome of F'ing around and finding out because they knew him, but were also somehow surprised at how easy he could off people. I think that's why I actually didn't like the 2nd movie as much. I really do prefer him being like a ghost...an unknown. People don't expect anything much from him and then he becomes the scariest person because he knows how to hurt people and he shows NO EMOTIONS. There's no joy, no anger, there's nothing. He's literally like a killing machine and all he wants is some peace and quiet. This final movie was great and Denzel has proven he's one of the best actors of all-time.
Watched this at the cinema three times back-to-back yesterday in three different Premium Formats. Dolby Cinema (2nd best), Superscreen (worst) and IMAX with Laser GT (best). 😎
I agree about McCall being too perfect. It's surprising that the run-time was as long as it was with how little he was challenged. But there was great character building, and McCall's motivation was solidly established. He had found a place where the people were genuinely good people, so of course he was gonna go scorched earth on the baddies.
I enjoyed that aspect to be honest, it was everyone else that was being challenged. It's all just about how far he'll get pushed before he snaps, then nobody can stop him, gives it a boiling kettle vibe. You anticipate that release once he gets to work.
When a professional like McCall get to an older age they have acquired years of experience that makes them very efficient in executing a plan or tactic to perfection.
Sometimes movies do all of the movie tropes, but it does them in such an entertaining way, that you just don't care. Equalizer 3 did that for me. Sure, "Roberto" is never really challenged, and always just ruins the day of anyone he touches, but that's exactly what I wanted to see.
Dude, u didnt see the part where he got shot?? He put his guard down for a moment and this little kid shot him. Mcall almost died. So YES, we did see a vunerable side to Mcall and we did see Mcall vunerable.
Got the chance to see this yesterday morning. I have to say I enjoyed it a lot. Especially watching the first two before hand since I had never seen them before.
The best of the three in my opinion. First act there is some time where McCall is hurt and takes awhile to heal. He is vulnerable. I do agree most of his vulnerability is mental as that is captured beautifully and paid off brilliantly at the end. A must watch.
Just saw it at the theater. Can’t wait for it to stream because I’m buying it again to add to my collection. Cool connections to previous movies that I won’t mention … no spoilers. 😊. It’s awesome!
I love the writing exactly as is. I just purchased and watched it tonight. Phenomenal I’m my opinion. I think what makes Robert McCall unique is that he’s a Jeckyl and Hyde. His Dr. Jeckyl side is humble, kind, peaceful, and generous. He’s also a natural guardian. But that’s where he becomes Hyde. It’s a split personality that he control. The Mr. Hyde side is a sociopathic, sadistic, and artistic killer. It’s as if killing bad guys is not enough, but it’s become so easy for him that he chooses to turn it into a game to add some challenge… like timing himself of going in empty-handed to see how well he can improvise. So to come from the opposite side as you, I’d actually be annoyed if they presented a character of equal skill. I feel like it would undermine his Batman-style effect of becoming the bad guys worst nightmare. Almost more evil than evil… if that makes sense. Anyway. All that to say this one may actually be my favorite of the three!
They do have different tones. The Equalizer is a vigilante who often barely even knows the people he's protecting or avenging. He's almost a superhero. John Wick is a video game come to life (including large gold coins that aren't official currency except in the underworld) where the protagonist is always being harrassed directly by the antagonists to move the story since he won't annihilate criminals purely out of the goodness of his heart.
I agree with you fully. One of the greatest aspects of a story is the challenge that the hero receives from the villain. The antagonist and protagonist fuel drama, anticipation and action. This third installment didn't have that. Still enjoyed it though.
I have to disagree, there’s more blood and “bodies” you see in 3 but it’s not as good as the first two nor is it as “brutal” as some people are saying. Some of the kills in 1 and 2 are much more brutal and violent but just because there’s more fake blood used here doesn’t mean it’s more gory or better.
Loved the third installments even though I miss McCall setting the watch and telling his enemies that they have so and so seconds before he does what he is good at (maybe Fuqua and Denzel were trying to avoid it being too repetitive)
Totally agree, just the right mix of action and development. Probably one of the best film of the past 10 yrs., an instant classic. One of the best directors of our time, just simply undeniably talent.
I loved it. I described it as a horror movie in reverse. You actually look forward to seeing the killer take out “victims” because the victims aren’t actual victims but are the victimizers of everyone else.
Denzel’s Equalizer movies feel like a survivor of those early 2010s “Bourne-ish Older action hero” movies. A genre ironically dethroned by John Wick the same year the first Equalizer came out.
I enjoyed this film a lot, BUT as I had watched the previous films the day’s leading up to this, there’s ONE thing missing - the music. Harry Gregson-Williams had created a great soundtrack for the films and the character had his theme, now there’s a new composer and none of the previous themes are used. That said, the new score works great, it’s just that slight feeling of "almost there". Anyway, if this is my only complaint, it’s safe to say it’s a pretty darn good movie! Highly recommended! 😅❤
This might be the first time I have to completely disagree with you. I enjoyed the previous installments. But this one was terrible. Action with no tension because McCall always stays above things. And it drags! It is shorter than the others but more boring. I’m sorry but after the third time seeing Denzel sipping a cappuccino, eating a cantuccini and talking gently to people no one knows I was asking myself: is this an action movie or an Italian soap opera?! And what took the cake for me was the sadistic ending. Only achievement of Fuqua directing this scene that it was unintentionally progressive: you feel bad for the villain. What an unnecessary brutal borefest.
So fun fact: Italy HATED this movie lol 😂 according to many reviews is "yet another USA attempt to make fun of Italy with basic stereotypes about Italy, some of them aren't even true"... Source, i live in Italy 😂
A decent review. Stuckmann trying to reconcile his like of this movie in leiu of '80's "Toxic Masculinity" action films is a delightful display of mental gymnastics.
Good film and an excellent trilogy. Agree it was missing an antagonist who is really McCall’s match. The first film was the closest we got. The antagonists in this one were a bit routine and the final act was anti-climactic. But the film stayed with me for a few days mainly for the character, the setting and the music! I was captivated just by watching him drink a cup of tea 🫖
I loved this movie. I haven't been to the theatre in years, and I choose this movie to watch on the big screen. It was 100% worth it! Great performances by all and just a very watchable movie.
Antoine Fuqua is kinda lowkey one of my favorite working directors. He just makes solid, well honed, adult thrillers. I like that his Equalizer trilogy is the rare adult action thriller film these days that are...patient. These films take their time. They aren't just wham-bam action. There is mood, character, style. Just good, good shit. These films feel like action-thrillers from the 70s without being referential or overt homage.
Chris, can you please please please do a review of John Q (2002)? It's such an underrated film, kinda corny, but so powerful when you know it's all about a desperate father doing absolutely anything he can to save his son's life, even if that means putting an entire hospital in a hold-up.
Denzel Washington is by far undoubtedly one of the Greatest Actors that has ever lived. Im 34yrs old and if a My little pony movie ever came out and Denzel was casted Id watch it in a heart beat, Denzel is just one of those artist that everything he touches turns to gold and never disappoints and is always expected to do phenomenal, that said has never failed to deliver such high expectations 😂
Aside from his vulnerability at the start when he got shot and almost died alone in his car, there were definitely “steven seagal vibes” with McCall being flawless in the fight scenes. In addition to the great filming and directing, I think the trilogy did well to build up its villains. The final face off in the 3rd was probably the best for me. The 1st was too “home alone” like. The 2nd sequel had a good revenge plot against former mates but the vacant “tornado town” didn’t quite satisfy. This one, however, had me tasting just how sweet McCall’s last apple was.
Has Denzel ever given a bad performance? I just can't remember a bad performance from him, even in his lesser movies. Good is just his default when he's not even trying. 'Effortlessly charismatic' is a good descriptor for him. These movies aren't Flight, or Training Day, or Malcolm X in terms of challenging Denzel as an actor, but he has not phoned it in for any one of these movies.
@@elevenseven-yq4vu He was just nominated for The Tragedy of Macbeth in his previous film. So can't say that he doesn't do films that challenge him. In fact he's been nominated for 3 times in his last 5 movies.
@@nikunjdixit1175 Thanks for the comment. Did not know about Macbeth. Will check out who else is in it and who directed. Sounds interesting so far. : )
You hit the nail on the head. You only see movies with this premise in awful straight to DVD or streaming productions. Recent Liam Neeson films being the prime example.
As you said Jason Bourne does that Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible, John Wick, they all known, however this franchise relies on him being a ghost on one knowing him to that extent in two we were given his background and even his colleagues but now it’s back to the mysterious guy who just wants peace in a coffee shop in the first Equaliser.
I think Dakota Fanning’s character is supposed to be that? She understands his motivation at the end. But she doesn’t have the special set of skills.
Dude still looks great for almost 70.. I thought he was in his early 50s.. damn
the kid in the 2nd one or even dakota
I just saw the film today before your review came out.
I mean Christopher Lloyd is like 84
This trilogy being described as really violent reminds me a lot of _Man on Fire_ even regardless of Dakota Fanning. Denzel is practically a slasher villain in that.
Equalizer series is a perfect followup to Man On Fire
Agree
The book the film was based on was actually set in Italy!
If Tony Scott is still alive, he probably direct all of The Equalizer trilogy
There was a fan theory that the equalizer movies are actually sequels to man on fire. I was hoping they would make it reality. Like just a quick line. Like when someone asks him who he is. He could say, "Some call me Robert others creasy. " Something subtle like that.
The concept of his character not being known by other people is imo what makes this standout from other films of this type. I can’t wait to see it.
Totally agree. It makes it so much more satisfying!!
Nobody lived to tell the tale of the boogie man
That is why I also love this franchise because he is so unknown and underrated and unassuming, if people know about him that would defeat the whole premise of the underdog surprising and getting the upper hand because the bad guys never see it coming so they can’t prepare.
💯 He’s like a regular Joe until he isn’t…
"Three weeks ago..."
This helps build another theme - actually a really big concept in this series - right time right place...
The " Equalizer trilogy" has always been a cross between " The book of Eli/Training Day-Man on fire" IMO
@@datbtrue now that you mention it, I feel it!
I love the way they humanised his character. You feel him falling in love with the location (which was stunning) and the community and their culture. That was my favourite aspect of the movie.

Nah,this one was by far the worse out of the three,
I actually enjoyed this more than the second one. The setting was gorgeous and the side characters were so likable and sweet. Sad that Denzel won’t be doing any more Equalizer movies but I’m glad to have watched all three.
Way better than 2 but not as good as 1. Second was so boring I didn't hold out much hope for this but it's a perfect ending to the trilogy.
@@jonfreeman9682I absolutely agree! It was a good solid ending. I had fun watching it

i loved it
Saw this in IMAX Dolby7.1 today - some takeaways
4. The villians seemed easy peasy types unlike earlier movies 😅
5. Just wanted Dakota to say “ Mr. Creasy “ once 😅. Stunning to see them in one frame and still reminded me of “ Pita “ 😢.
Just go out and grab some popcorn n enjoy 🎉🎉🎉
Ps : shoutout to Chris for the Tshirt
Denzel Washington and Antoine Faqua have a Brilliant Timeless Trilogy
Mcall did face death he got shot in the spine
Recovered and handled the Italian mob Effortlessly
What made this movie fun for me was "they don't know he's that dangerous" vibe. And my god is he dangerous lmao.
I jumped back in my seat several times by how violent some of the Mafia died (and holy hell do I love it).
9/10 movie for me
And I gotta go on vacation in that little town sometime, MAN that coastal village is beautiful
The village is called Atrani on the Amalfi coast and it is just as beautiful as it is in the film 😍
How to describe the trilogy in one sentence?
"A lonely man get rid of people who don't give him some peace and quiet."😂
Denzel and John David Washington are both killing it with their film choices!
Idk bout John…he starred in Amsterdam ☠️

I saw this movie yesterday. I really liked the plot development and action. Nice to see Denzel and Dakota reunited in a movie. Maybe we'll see an Equalizer 4 with the two working together again. I really hope the series continues.
You do know how Old denzel is right ?
You don't have to kick ass to be a badass - just a good shot.@@jiggafromstatefarm9997
So glad this movie rocks. We just need Sicario 3 now 😮
That’s what I’m waiting on 💯
Violence cannot describe how violent this movie was. I expected it to be violent, but holy shit. Denzel was like the grim reaper 😭
So he's like John Wick here?
@SwfanredLotr Not constant action back to back for 30 mins straight, but brutal yes.
@@SwfanredLotr Equilizer came before John Wick
@@DIM0ND12w I don't understand why people keep feeling the need to compare everything to John Wick. It's getting really annoying now.
@@beethovenstrance5042 yeah I don't either
Saw the movie today. It was excellent. People not knowing what he is capable of is what makes the character awesome. The movie was violent where there were violent scenes but the movie was deeper than mere violence. I felt Robert's struggle to having the power to do the right thing, doing the right thing and also regretting the violence. The portrayal of life in Italy was nostalgic. Having seen the first two installments, this one made me cry Yes I cried. Loved this movie, loved the director and loved Denzel Washington. Can't wait to see the 4th installment or the origins of Robert Mc Call.
This guy gets it, doesn’t flounder around, isn’t annoying, and makes a movie review in less than 5 minutes.
Perfect old school action movie, enjoyed every minute of it.
That build up scene in the beginning was just perfection, he would make the grim reaper scared. Denzel showed he still got it
What a wasted opportunity for SONY not to title this as THE 3QUALIZER....
Also, Review NIMONA and BLUE BEETLE already, damnit!!!!!!!!
Are you 12yo... Stop using number to spell words 😂
Haha. They did that with the second one in the stupidest way too. “The Equali2er” so I don’t understand why they didn’t do it with 3
It was the most challenging for Robert to beat the bad guys in The Equalizer 1 when that big guy injures him and he was left lying on the floor, the security guard then helped him to get up. If Robert didn't get help, he would've been a goner. But in the 2nd and 3rd one it was kind of easy for him to defeat the bad guys, but all the Equalizer movies are still brilliant and very entertaining to watch.
I feel like Dave kinda gave the equalizer a run for his money in the equalizer 2
All the BS? Cool 😂😂😂
@@ClinicalDecisionYikesYT wtf is BS?
@@ClinicalDecisionYikesYT That entire Paris sequence was bs. Especially after he jumped out of a 3rd story window landed on a van and then he got up and walked up the stairs. If I’m not mistaken he was knocked down the stairs twice. The fall out the window should’ve paralyzed him but the tumble down multiple flights of stairs definitely should’ve finished him off.
I loved almost every second of it, as an action movie, it was an absolute blast for me.
What action 😂
@@evoman44 yea he said he would from bottom to the top brick by brick and he did that. From the low level guys all the way to head boss.
Definitely much better than 2, close to if not an par with 1. Definitely, by far, the best movie of 2023
This franchise is so amazing to me, just an under the radar giant that always opens pretty well and is also a great set of films, unlike say Bays transformers which made mountains of money but are not great. These also being Denzel’s only sequels that he’s ever done really shows how much he loves working with Antione Fuqua ever since Training Day
I freaking Loved this movie and this franchise. I'm going to see it again tomorrow.
It was great seeing Danzel Washington and Dakota Fanning back on screen together.
I always get surprised when I see her these days, like "Holy crap, shes grown up". I'm just a 2 years older than her, but all the films I saw of her kinda cemented the image of her as a child actor im my head. Funny how the mind works.
@@quiett6191 yeah I know! She’s one of these actors that I will always see as a child actor.
I'm glad to see there chemistry picked up after nearly 20 years as it was so good in 'man on fire'.
Not really. That whole arc felt so painfully forced lol
Would like to see John David Washington play a younger Mccal in a prequel.
John Wick
Jason Bourne
Robert McCall

The trilogy of dad movies is complete and I'm glad Denzel was able to finish it on his terms.
Saw it last night.
Loved it! It's the perfect popcorn flick.
Of course, an old man kicking ass is nothing new in terms of plot, but still fun.
That's dad strength for ya
Perfect closure for the trilogy, also Dakota showing up was the fan service we needed.
I didn’t like how cartoonishly evil the villains were, but other than that, I enjoyed it!
Antoine at his best , can't wait for the Michael Jackson Biopic.
Movie reviews coming soon, give us a follow. It would mean the world.
I love these movies so much. Man on fire is one of my favorites. My wife insists on seeing every Denzel film that comes out and I always look forward to the equalizer.
The town they chose to shoot in was fantastic, dare I say romantic. I liked that contrast of violence and beauty.

Also this was Denzel back with Dakota Fanning since 2004 Man on Fire
I loved this movie, was surprised by the level of violence; the bit where he stares down the guy as he’s dying was chilling and the end where he’s literally Dancing Death is chef’s kiss👌
I thought Dakota Fanning’s role was largely irrelevant, just a nice Easter egg really but tying her back to Susan was cool.
Also like how the franchise itself was clearly put to bed, it felt right. I do wonder how the villagers would have thought of him after though 😂 if he joins the parish council he’d have no arguments at least 🤣

Both Denzel and Liam Neeson are spending their older years in revenge action type movies. Curious thing.
Let me guess he loved it, because he is the critic who loves everything.
I miss ebert.
Completely agree
100%. But I would expect nothing more than an average movie directed by Fuqua.... that's all he does.
Denzel owns every role hes in and Antoine Fuqua owns every film he makes.
@kishenkoolskills90 Training Day one of the best films ever made.
@kishenkoolskills90Way better than the Equalizer franchise.
Would love to have an Equalizer, John Wick crossover.
Eh, they have different tones, John Wick is balls to the wall action, Equalizer is more of a slow burn set up to the action.
Or the Expendables
I agree with you fully. One of the greatest aspects of a story is the challenge that the hero receives from the villain. The antagonist and protagonist fuel drama, anticipation and action. This third installment didn't have that. Still enjoyed it though.
This ending was such a great sendoff
I always imagined that the equalizer was the unofficial sequel to Man on Fire. Dakota Fanning being in this movie is just the cherry on top.
Brando, Pacino, Hoffman, Nicholson, Hopkins, De Niro, Day Lewis, Denzel, Oldman, Bale. Goats.
This one is probably my least favorite. The final villain was underwhelming
My wife and I watched The Equalizer 1 & 2 last weekend for the first time. Now we are looking forward to see part 3.
2:40 is why a prequel is needed.
This felt like an old timey Stuckmann video. Feeling some nostalgia here
Denzel Washington is by far undoubtedly one of the Greatest Actors that has ever lived.
True. But I would prefer to see him again once more in a role that actually challenges him as an actor. Movies like Equalizer sell his talents short.
