DON’T Buy a WATER DAMAGED Pop Up Camper! | How to Check for Water Damage and Leaks Before You Buy!

  • This video details how and where to look for pop up camper water damage or signs that a pop up camper might be leaking. Additionally, this video details some questions to ask pop up camper sellers regarding a pop up camper you’re looking to purchase.
Water damage can cause significant damage if not caught soon enough. Wood in the roof, box, or sub-floor of the pop up camper can soften and rot when exposed to enough water. At best it may cause some discoloration and rust; however, at worst, it can cause significant soft spots and damage. These soft spots can threaten the structural integrity of the pop up camper and depending on where the damage occurs, they can become a safety hazard.

This is why I only paid 200 for mine. Worst case I get working appliances for my micro cabin and I get a frame for a work trailer. I lucked out and I think I can repair all the water damage for about 400 bucks.

Bought a water damaged pop up (roof was caved in on one end). Best decision I could have made! Learned a lot about the construction, rebuilding was affordable and I ended up with a customized camper I'm very happy to own.

If a 2005 Aliner hard sided A frame pop up has soft areas in all for corners underneath in subflooring, could it possibly be repaired with the product you used in your video?
When I inspected underneath I thought it may have been from years of traveling and just wear and tear. Then I saw this video and wondered if leaks in all four corners?

If I had a dime for every time I see a ruined popup camper someone is restoring a crappy trashed popup. We purchased a popup that was stored in a building, some fool put an automobile roof rack on it. Last winter we stored it outside and the cover blew off. It did get some water egress because of the roof rack. I removed the roof rack and repaired the damage caused by the rack and filled the holes. I resealed the roof and fixed all the seams. The floor is solid and I have done general repairs. Easy way to check for water damage inside is look for rusty staples they used to install the roof panels inside. Also any exterior rusted screw heads or removing a screw indicates water issues if the whole screw is rusted. I replaced all my screws with stainless steel. Lucky for me all my roof wood is solid.

Used, 2018 Rockwood Premier 2516G. Being our first one, we didn't want to risk something too old, but we also wanted to shy away from some of the QC issues from 2020 and 2021 models.

I know its not the most visually appealing . However I used eternabond tape on all the roof seams of my 1206. That roof will double as a boat guaranteed.

The Misses and I just took ours to the Grand Canyon for a few days. Free camping (no hook-ups) by the heliport. The helicopters would fly at treetop level right over us during the day. The Elk (big ones) were bugling at night. Good times!

Well crap....I am 2.5 months too late to watch this video. lol We bought a 2005 Fleetwood Bayside and I took it to the race track in Minnesota and low and behold....it leaks. Of course, they didn't tell us when we bought it it had water damage...whether they didn't know or didn't bother to tell us. SOOO now, the work starts. I am getting it looked at by a camper world advisor. I know he's gonna tell me that it'll be x amount of money to fix to try and get us to buy another one. BUT I want him to tell me how MUCH damage is done so I can make a decision on whether I would fix it myself or let insurance take it off our hands. I've learned so much in the last 2.5 months about pop up campers and watched countless hours of videos about this and that and how to fix this and that. Thanks so much for this video. It is absolutely necessary for people to do research about what they're thinking of purchasing.

Thanks so much for this video! We bought one that had both the front storage bin water damage in both corners as well as the 2 support bolts you mention around the 6:22 mark. I see you used the JB wood hardener on your storage bin, what would you suggest for the holes where the support bolts in the corner of the roof? I've tried sealing them with Flex Paste and it appears to be water proof but is there another product you would recommend to patch such holes? Thanks so much for your channel! It's been so helpful!

I think they all do or will have leaks. It's mostly all repairable.

We were looking for our first popup, and i was looking for local sellers of used campers, and all of them were water damaged to some amount. My thought was, I'd spend $1500 or so on a used camper, fix it up, and we could use it for a few years until we got a better one... Once i looked into how much work it would be, essentially it would be a project, not a camper... and we'd never feel fully comfortable in it due to possible bugs etc. So we ended up getting a 5yo used one (which is in mostly pristine condition), with a warranty, from a dealer, who probably ripped us off. Essentially a new camper as our 'starter' camper..

Yeah, I’m sure it depends where you’re located, but these days it’s very tough to find a solid camper for $1,500.

What do you think about a 2005 model jayco that has had the roof replaced. Owner now says the previous owner took all the caulking off and it leaked, and ruined the roof. This owner replaced the roof, would you say it’s pretty fair to say the floor seen quite a bit of water, or do you think it could still be solid?

Doesn't do much to the newer popup roofs, since they are made of styrofoam and fiberglass. But the floors ,it isn't good when it reaches that far. Our Palomino has the wood covered in a black plastic, even the bunk undersides!

The seller thinks the previous owner caused these stains by not drying it out properly before storing. He says there’s no leaks whatsoever. I’ve not seen this in person yet, they are a long drive away. I like everything else about this camper. It’s a 2004 Rockwood. Thoughts? (Trying to attach picture)

    • @cynthiagray836

It won’t let me attach a photo but there are rust colored stains on the canvas on one end.

    • @ItsPoppin
      @ItsPoppin  2 роки тому +1

Rust colored stains indicates there is a leak in the roof - most likely rusting out a metal component such as screws before reaching the canvas. Triple check for water damage in the roof.
