Nice solution for a renovation fix. My new construction house is post and beam with lots of glass. To ensure the sills could withstand knocks, drippy plant pots and the odd cup of spilled tea I used paperply plywood to case them them tied that into the drywall with corner bead. Ten years later they are solid as the day they were installed. Paperply is commonly used for concrete forming so it is able to withstand liquid and abuse far better than drywall/mud. The main caveat is that it must be painted with diluted wood glue so that the corners can be finished (faired) with tape and glue where necessary.
Thanks Mihr, your solution of using paperply is such a great idea! I'll have to give that a try. Your home sounds incredible. Post and beam architecture is stunning. I grew up on the west coast where it became one of my favourites styles of architecture. Perfect for showcasing the natural beauty of the landscape, inside and out. Appreciate you sharing your experience. Great advice!
I’m considering trim-less on my kitchen windows to allow reuse of kitchen cabinets which would otherwise be slightly too wide. Thx for presenting an example of how that might work out.

I love this! I’ve looked everywhere for videos on how I can change my windows to trimless. But have had no luck. I live in Alberta so I was worried about the expansion and contraction, cracking etc of the window return if I was to replace the trims to trimless. Would u do this in a climate like Alberta has? I’m assuming this project u did was in BC?
Hi Marizel, I'm in Toronto and we experience high rates of expansion and contraction due to climate like you in Alberta. I'd do this in any climate because using this tape is a simple step to prevent cracking. I've been using it for years on all my patching and reinforcing. Give it a try and let me know what you think? I love hearing from you and hope it helps you too!
Great video, you certainly make it look easy and doable! I was looking for ideas on trimless windows. For me, it's more of a practical need than esthetics, although I do really like how it looks. We are renovating our basement kitchen and removed old cabinets. There was very little distance between the large window and the cabinets and they had to notch out the trim which was very unattractive! Since we're planning on a tiled backsplash all the way up to the window and having the upper cabinets on either side go right to the window, this trimless window idea is the solution! We had new windows installed a couple years ago and they didn't need to remove the jambs. So am I correct to assume that I can remove the wood jambs and replace with drywall? What's the advantage to doing this over just putting drywall on top? Thanks so much!
it's funny, back in the 90s and 2000s, cheap homes were trimless with just drywall around the window. My 1990s home has had this "upgrade" for 30 years already. Interesting that you want that instead of wood trimmed windows. New mansions in southern california all have wood trimmed windows, except the ugly box homes. I bet in a decade or 2, window casing will make a comeback. Endless cycle of interior "upgrades".
I remember that too and no doubt you may be right. Ultimately homeowners should choose something that they love and will be happy with in the long run. There is also a good case to take it easy on the upgrades and to appreciate what you have.
Sadly seems that none of the hardware stores here in Finland sell L corner beads. Might need to try and cut a one side of a regular corner bead to size :(
Yes, wood sills look great! You’ll like that! I’ve done both depending on what look you want. I turned this window into a window desk with a wood finish top. Here’s the link if you or anyone is interested: ua-cam.com/video/xHg0NcX6r9A/v-deo.htmlsi=HxVsSn2mx7wVZnoM. You’ve got this Samuel.
Can you do a video of NO TRIM DOOR FRAME? I've only found a few z beads, reveal trim, but nothing like this window, just square no trim, and if you have the video done by the end of the week I would really appreciate it.... joking not joking though lol
There’s builder grade which is basic and cost effective. Any improvements like this which are costly in terms of labor are upgrades to a home. If you prefer trim, that’s cool too. In my area homes are upgrading to drywall returns for modern interiors. Thanks for the question!
@@DaruDhillon Our daughter spent a lot of money doing that on her remodel and hates it. Everyone asks her when they are going to finish. She is sensitive and it really hurts her feelings. Drywall corners in a doorway are not very robust.
I hate trims in a modern house. They look farm style. A slick look is far more classy. Thank you for sharing your method to get that slick look. Nice job.
You’re looking to countersink your screws. If you go a little deeper not to worry. The finished product is in this video. I turned that window into a 3 seater breakfast bar. Check it out here: How To Build a Desk | Window Desk ua-cam.com/video/xHg0NcX6r9A/v-deo.html
Where I live this clean modern look is the go-to. Upgrades are a personal choice and may not suite everyone’s style. If you have a traditional home you might prefer casing. 👍🏽
This is not good! You are using the wrong drywall bead.. you can use J beads and avoid the step of making the window opening smaller.. and it’s much faster..
It depends on what you like. For contemporary or modern builds, over the past 8 years this is the most popular look here but I hear what you’re saying. 👍🏽
@@sueann2555 It all depends on the application. When paired with large windows and a minimalist interior or organic natural it's a stunning look for fans of modern or contemporary interiors. ❤
Sad thing is, this is the new trend in homes. Apartment style. Funny thing is, cost is close to what it would take to trim out the window wood. Gotta stay trendy though
Mesh tape with mud.. definitely will crack. It’s great that you are about doing all these things, but it would be better if you researched more about what you are presenting to the masses…
Practice makes this easier and faster. I just did drywall returns around my electrical panel opening. For people interested in learning drywall it’s a good skill to know. 👍🏽
Drywall over wood window return…wasting time and money! Guess what taping compound will bond to wood. Don’t use plastic. Use tape on metal corner bead , tape directly to wood, No L metal ! The return is done. No big ass gap around window . Sorry ,this Gal is not a good finisher.
Vinyl beads are a game changer and you can do so much with them. The finished window can been seen in my Window Desk video for those who like the look. Cheers!

I prefer the trimless look over the the old fashioned way.

Sounds like a good solution. Being able to reuse kitchen cabinets is great to do. Love that! Thanks
Great video! Thank you for showing us how this is done, the look is much cleaner, now do one for trim less base(board)
Thanks! Will do!

"Upgrade" seems a bit opinionated. If I wanted to put the trim back on for a classic elegant look, is that a downgrade? 😏

How do you open ur window? Is it openable?

What’s going on below the sill? Looks unfinished.
I turned the window into a window desk. A countertop sits on the sill and accommodates seating for 3. It’s another video.
Can you do this over vinyl jamb
I would check the warranty on your windows first. It is possible.
