Many thanks for taking time out to produce this tutorial. I am new to CAD and your method has helped very much in choosing LibreCAD. I was able to follow your instruction without having to keep pressing the pause button.
Hi Electronics Instructor; Thank you for you comment that is supportive and encouraging. Those comments which express grievances are also appreciated as constructive criticism - they keep me humble. Thank you for your time spent in viewing. howtopam
My mind is not as sharp as those that can "complete blueprints for rocket engines" by the time you put the border. WHY IS EVERYONE IN SUCH A HURRY?!?! Is someone hurrying them to build that babylon tower again?? Your tone is very encouraging for new people to try this product. I am glad it has command line input. Maybe now I can migrate from Windows ...
Hi Ghost Erik; Thank you for your input - all input is extremely valuable. Some viewers state that this tutorial is too slow as you have mentioned. I do agree and have purposely recorded it slow for those who appreciate following at this pace rather than stopping and replaying the tutorial in parts to attempt to understand what is happening. For those who find the slow pace too monotonous they can speed up there video player speed to 1.25X or 1.5X or 1.75X for faster playing. Playback on the UA-cam site in a web browser can be changed by pressing the (+,-) keys for speed increase and decrease. It appears that many people are in fact in a "HURRY" these days - time is money. When in Babylon (Rome) do as the Romans do. Thank you for your comment. howtopam
Some good general recap. What threw me is it looks like your drawing back to front, be using dims. I would have selected the line by Start (instead of end) - so a line going up is + instead of -, and a line going left of the cursor is going - instead of +. Small point but needing pointing out.
Hi Mike Burditt; Good Point! It is good practice for all Draftpersons to be consistant in the working direction; and preferably that direction comforms to the standardized "norm" - from negative towards the positive. Thank you for pointing this out for others to heed. howtopam

Hi Howtopam. Good video for absolute beginners. A suggestion for improvement: Show the basic tools in effect - and show the differences between them, rather than just pointing at them and reading the hint-text out loud. This generally applies to the entire video, but just an example: the snap-options: Show how they work (or don't mention them at all). Otherwise thank you. It's great that you take the time to introduce total newbies to tools like this.
Hi Rasmus Sandberg; Thank you for your input. You raise an important point about showing the tools in effect. I will remember your advice in future videos. Thank you. howtopam

The video is well done, but the volume is incredibly low. I do not know if it is the speaker's voice, or if he had the mike off-axis, but this video is very difficult to hear without the volume control on my computer cranked to max. Hi a Boswell Inniss; If you choose the polygon [cen,cor] tool and set (6) sides from the upper toolbar then pick your center point, the command-line will request: "select next corner". Now enter the "@" for (relative to) the center point and then type 0,7 after the @. Like this: @0,7 This will create a hexagon (6) sides with each side being "7" units in length. I hope this information is helpful. If you require further information please comment. Thank you for your inquiry. howtopam
@@howtopamcom I apologize, about 2 sec. after I clk'd Send … thought maybe the other icon. Tried - works ideal. By the way, is there a way to display the Units symbol, [" - for inches], on Dims? Thanks!
Hi a Boswell Inniss; Thank you for your reply. To get the ["] inches symbol to show after the number in a dimension simply choose the (Properties) option from the (Modify) tools drop-down menu and then click on select the dimension text to highlight and select it. Then in the (Properties) window next to the (Dimension) symbol there are three boxes. Type your dimension number in the box and end it with the ["] symbol and click O.K. Hi Richard Szabo'; If I understand your question correctly, you want to make the number text size larger so it is easier to see? To increase the dimension value size go to the top tool bar and click on "Options". Under "Options" from the drop-down menu choose "Current Drawing Preferences". A new window will open. From the new window choose the "Dimensions" tab. Under the "Dimensions" tab in the left column at the top where it says "Text size & position" choose "Text size". The default setting is likely 2.5 unless you have changed it. By changing the value in this box the dimension value size on your current drawing will change to larger or smaller print. If I have misunderstood your question please comment and I will attempt to provide information to address your new question. Thank you for your question. howtopam

Hi a Boswell Inniss; I think you are describing [Angular] dimensions. If the text remains too small to be seen, you can go to [Options] on the upper tool bar and from the drop-down menu choose [Current Drawing Preferences] and from the new small window that opens up choose [Dimensions]. On the [Dimensions] tab window you will see in the left column a field [Text Height] and it is defaulted to "2.5mm" change it to "4.5mm" or "6.5mm" or what ever size you desire. Then in the right column you will see the field [Arrow Size] change that field to your desired size. Now you save your changes and the text and arrow heads on your drawing will appear larger. All your questions about librecad are welcome. howtopam
Hi Alfred INNISS; If you desire to make the vertical line that is currently "1.28" into "0.0128", then you can make use of the [Trim] tool under the [Modify] button in the left toolbar. Just trim the line until it is the correct length or trim the line to "0" length and then [Lengthen] the line by a (distance) of "0.0128". Try these options. Thank you, nice slow pace for an absolute newbie to follow. Would have been better if the background was lighter, it's difficult to see the lines on the black.
Hi Tony Collins; Thank you for your comment. I do agree with you about the dark background making the drawing lines obscure. Through the setting the background color can be changed to any shade that is desired. I do most of my drawing with black on white. I am happy to hear that you found the speed of the video acceptable. Some find the video speed too slow, but I suggest to them that up the speed of their video player. Hi Mill Vanilli; I like to think of the negative (-) symbol as only reverse or backup from the direction that one is currently headed. Hi a Boswell Inniss; Most applications will add a number in front of a duplicate file when saved rather than overwrite the existing file that contains the same name. Librecad "autosaves" many times during the creation of a drawing. These "autosaved" files usually have a # in front of the file name. Hi Sabrina Arturis; I believe, if I understand your question correctly, that you desire to enter the line length into the command line interface - correct? Then you will need to change the fraction 21/2 to a decimal form by divide 2 by 21 which provides a solution of - 0.09523809523. Therefore you may enter into the command line interface 12.09523809523 as your line length. Thank you; howtopam
Hi Sabrina Arturis; Just to clarify - the figure is 12' 0.09523809523'' or 12' X 12" = 144 inches plus 0.09523809523 inches. That is - 144.09523809523 inches. Thank you; howtopam
12'-21/2" makes no sense as a distance notation. Did you really mean 21/2 inches (10.5) so the program would do the math for you or did you mean to say 12' 2 1/2" as in 12 feet 2.5 inch?
Hi MetallChips 85; Above the drawing window to the right of the "By Layer" - drop-down - menus is another small window labeled "Radius" that appears when any of the "Circle tools" are selected. You can enter your radius of 3.3125 into this little "radius" window above when utilizing the circle "Center with a Radius" tool and then choose a point for the center of your circle to be located within the drawing. Hope this helps. Thank you; howtopam
I found a way after posting the question, sometimes that's what it takes i guess. I selected the 'Circle' drop down menu, then selected 'Center,point' ,then selected the center location, then i clicked the empty space below the command line and finally found the spot where a critical dimension could be entered. I tried the same thing using 'Line' 2 points, vertical, horizontal and rectangle, but it says unknown error. How would i properly command this function? TO be honest, i see a lack of information regarding this software, which i see great potential in. I have experience with Autodesk and Mastercam along with over 10 years of Mechanical drafting and on the floor machine work. If i could contribute to the development of software and or tutorials, i would gladly do so.
Hi MetallChips 85; Glad to hear that you located a place to enter dimensions. Librecad is very command-line oriented for proficient optimum functionality. Just above the spot where you located to enter your dimension is the word "command" and that text will change, giving suggested input pertaining to the tool that you are utilizing. In that spot you will notice that the text will request a "point" or a "radius" or report any errors in the input values attempted. If you have suggestions to contribute tot eh development of the Librecad application, here is a web address where you could perhaps communicate with the developers. Thank you; howtopam

This video appears to turn off a lot of people and causing some of them to avoid trying LibreCAD. I encourage people to consider LibreCAD but look for a tutorial video elsewhere to decide if you want to try it or already have it installed and want to start learning how to use it.
Hi Mark Anthony Castillon; I am looking in to your request and discovered what appears to be perhaps an issue with the data entry of "bearing" units. But if the bearings are converted to decimal notation and input as deg/min/sec in decimal notation Librecad seems to accept the input and function as expected. This suggests that a bearing such as - N80d04'30"E would convert to 80.075 degrees. When a command line entry such as @15.3 < 80.075 is input the point is plotted within the drawing in its proper location. @(relative to)15.3(linear units)

+Northern Woodsman Hi Northern Woodsman; You will find the latest LibreCad version here: launchpad.net/~librecad-dev/+archive/ubuntu/librecad-daily/+build/9370387
In December 2018 the most current version has a different user interface. I found what I think is the last version (2.0.11) with an interface matching this video here: github.com/LibreCAD/LibreCAD/releases/tag/2.0.11
If you spend your time looking at the options, you will find that just like the things howtopam stated as "different in the last edition" apply to this one too. They are still there, but under different headings. It isn't the tutorial that is not helpful, it is that programs shuffle their working ideas so that people have to constantly learn new things. But all you need to do in this instance is spend some time navigating your buttons. It's not that difficult.
Play the video on 1.5 speed and it becomes smooth and easier to take, other than that it is a really well done video. Great content

Some good general recap. What threw me is it looks like your drawing back to front, be using dims. I would have selected the line by Start (instead of end) - so a line going up is + instead of -, and a line going left of the cursor is going - instead of +. Small point but needing pointing out.

Hello, hope you can help. Have a Hexagon, [used polygon, radius tool]. One leg = 10.29, however should be 7. How to achieve that?
Hi a Boswell Inniss; If you choose the polygon [cen,cor] tool and set (6) sides from the upper toolbar then pick your center point, the command-line will request: "select next corner". Now enter the "@" for (relative to) the center point and then type 0,7 after the @. Like this: @0,7 This will create a hexagon (6) sides with each side being "7" units in length. is there a way to increase the size of the value of added dimenision (e.g. the number 140.0000) ?

Why when saving some files, it adds a #in front; other NONE?
Hi a Boswell Inniss; Most applications will add a number in front of a duplicate file when saved rather than overwrite the existing file that contains the same name. Librecad "autosaves" many times during the creation of a drawing. These "autosaved" files usually have a # in front of the file name. Please see this web form question in the link below.

Hi, are there keyboard shortcuts. Regards, Cy
Hi Cy O'Hara; Yes Librecad is completely operational thtough the keyboard by entering commands on the commandline located at the bottom of the drawing window. Pressing the key combination [Ctrl + M] will turn on the commandline function. Here ia a link to the Librecad online manual listing all of the keyboard commands --> wiki.librecad.org/index.php/Commands

Additionally, my desktop image does not look as good as yoursI I do not have the row of 5 icons on the left, and it does not seem to respond to dragging the frame across?

You can get those via widgets > dock widgets > mark the ones you want.
Hi again Howtopam, your help has been most useful.
I do not know if I am imagining it, but it seems to work much smoother on 64 bit and a bit (excuse the pun) slower on 32 bit, but not enough to put me off.
This is a bit off piste, but I have never been able to make a donation for the LibreCAD, or Mint, I always seem to get booted out. Perhaps it is my Euro's?
You appear to be running Ubuntu. I'm running Ubuntu 16.04. The latest I can locate is version 2.0.9. Can you tell me how you installed the 2.1.0 version you're running?

What's up with the excessive amount of background noise/hiss??? And this is a totally different menu layout from v2.1
Hi WiseOne; Likely my mic volume is turned up too high. But thank you for noticing I will try to set the mic volume better on my future videos.

@@howtopamcom No it, it's not that. Just listen to the video and while you can be heard, the background white noise is very excessive. You would probably benefit from a newer condensor microphone. Something like a Blue Yeti or other similar ones people use for podcasting.
When trying to use PROPERTIES; I follow their steps; * clk Prop.[in Modify mn.]…* sel. Ln.
Cannot sel.Ln ….whole process does not work! From what text/or, how can I learn my errors? Thanks!
Hi a Boswell Inniss; Can you select the line by setting your mouse cursor on it and left clicking before you go to [modify]+[properties]? If clicking on the line does not "select" it, try holding the left mouse button down just off of the line and drag the mouse - there will be a "green" rectangle - over the line to select it. Once the line is selected then go to [Modify]+[Properties]. If dragging the "green" rectangle over the line does not "select" the line or mouse clicking, save your drawing to a file and close the drawing and close Librecad and reopen the application. Sometimes the application get a glitch and closing and reopening will set the application in order again. If these tips do not work for you please comment and we will try some other suggestions.
Thank you for your question.

Hi a Boswell Inniss; What is "Fail"? Did librecad open and you cannot open the drawing? What version of librecad are you using? Did the drawing save with the correct file extension? Can you "right-click" on your drawing and choose "open with" and then find librecad in the menu and try to open the drawing through that procedure? Please comment.

@@howtopamcom FAIL is shortcut: Did not work! VER.=2.1.3;

Hi a Boswell Inniss; You are not able to open your drawing in librecad? What happens when you have librecad open and drag your drawing file from the storage folder into the librecad view-port? Your librecad 2.1.3 is the most resent release and I also have that version and have had no problems like you are experiencing. If dragging the drawing file into the view-port does not work, check the permissions on your drawing file. Right click on the drawing file and from the drop-down menu choose [properties] and check the "permissions" tab to see if the file is owned by User. If you are the owner of the drawing file and you still cannot open it in librecad try to reinstall librecad. Please comment.

Can anyone tell me how do I enter 12'-21/2" for a line ,I am new at this thank you
Hi Sabrina Arturis; I believe, if I understand your question correctly, that you desire to enter the line length into the command line interface - correct? Then you will need to change the fraction 21/2 to a decimal form by divide 2 by 21 which provides a solution of - 0.09523809523. Therefore you may enter into the command line interface 12.09523809523 as your line length.
Thank you;
howtopam
howtopam thanks will try it.
Hi Sabrina Arturis; Just to clarify - the figure is 12' 0.09523809523'' or 12' X 12" = 144 inches plus 0.09523809523 inches. That is - 144.09523809523 inches.
Thank you;
howtopam
12'-21/2" makes no sense as a distance notation. Did you really mean 21/2 inches (10.5) so the program would do the math for you or did you mean to say 12' 2 1/2" as in 12 feet 2.5 inch?
How would a person draw a 3.3125 dia circle using radius circle command? Just that would be informative.
Thank you;
howtopam
Thank you;

I'm at a loss why you would create a layer for center lines, then choose some other random line type for that layer. That is the whole purpose.
Hi Rodney Hopson; Yes; the layer is created for "center-lines". However, a cad operator may choose another style of line to represent the object centers, if the "center-line" styles offered may not appear as preferred.

how to plot lot bearings? surveyors units?
Hi Mark Anthony Castillon; I am looking in to your request and discovered what appears to be perhaps an issue with the data entry of "bearing" units. But if the bearings are converted to decimal notation and input as deg/min/sec in decimal notation Librecad seems to accept the input and function as expected. This suggests that a bearing such as - N80d04'30"E would convert to 80.075 degrees. When a command line entry such as @15.3 < 80.075 is input the point is plotted within the drawing in its proper location. @(relative to)15.3(linear units)
i already figured it out but I used draftsite it is also free no more conversion required....
Great that you have found a solution.
I appreciate your fast response! God Bless!

I can't find 2.1.0, just 2.0.9
+Northern Woodsman Hi Northern Woodsman; You will find the latest LibreCad version here: launchpad.net/~librecad-dev/+archive/ubuntu/librecad-daily/+build/9370387
In December 2018 the most current version has a different user interface. I found what I think is the last version (2.0.11) with an interface matching this video here: github.com/LibreCAD/LibreCAD/releases/tag/2.0.11
Seems like the version you download today April 2020) bears no resemblance to your tutorial, therefore is not really helpful
