  • For this video, we are collaborating with one of my favorite youtuber Mok-yi the Inappropriate Reefer to talk about his experience with ever popular mangrove plants in our aquariums.
Mangroves, made popular by Julian Sprung, more and more hobbyists have been putting them in their home aquariums with moderate success.
In order to fine tune things for greater success in keeping these beautiful plants, I have enquired help from Julian himself in the past but wanted you guys to get different voices and perspective as well. This is where Mok-yi comes in. Many of you know how genuine and authentic he is in his journey of reef keeping and how he shares all of his failures as well as his success.
This is what he learned, his tips and his perspectives.
I also wanted to get Jake to get involved about this as well because he and I had some in-depth conversation about this that was slightly different from Julian's few years ago in RAP but I was never able to get it done...
One thing that I can share from Jake is that he experienced better health and growth when he misted the leaves of the mangroves with freshwater and wash off some of the salt from there instead of Julian's don't have to do anything approach.
I hope you guys enjoy this collaboration and hopefully learned something new!
If you have any other tips/advices please comment down below. I would love to hear from you guys.
    Happy reefing!

Plants transpire from their leaves and are also capable of foliar feeding, which is to absorb nutrients through their leaves. That would explain why even though its not required to mist the leaves of a mangrove they seem healthier when you do. Also spraying water might increase humidity which helps as well.
I don't have mangroves in my tank but Inappropriate Reefer could test this by instead of dosing the tank when the leaves turn yellow he can try foliar feeding to directly address the nutrient issue. This is a pretty advanced hydroponic growing strategy. It's used to dose chemicals right away. I was told if you try to dose through the roots it takes 3 days, but foliar feeding is instant. Also there's a thing called nutrient burn if you dose too much. You should do your own research first, but you try to isolate the specific nutrient deficiency based on the color of the leaves. You start foliar feeding while keeping everything else the same and if you see improvement you increase dosing that chemical in the normal way and it doesn't turn yellow at all.

What light are you using over the mangrove? What fertilizer pods are you using in the sand bed. Thanks
