    Cheap things aren't good, and good things aren't cheap....700 bucks for a tent that will survive the PCT is a deal in my book.

    Thank you for the great review. I was especially glad to hear that you were able to fit it into your Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60 in the side quiver pocket. I have that same pack and that is my plan if I get this tent. Which stuff sack did you use in order to fit it into this pocket? Am I correct in assuming that when it was stuffed in the original sack it was just too wide?

(Long story) but anyway when I went to replace it, they were out of stock, so I ended up getting the Tarptent double rainbow Li on the blemish sale. Blemish deals usually offer anywhere from 50 to 100 dollars off just for minor cosmetic blemishes.. honestly I never found anything I could see.. I think the normal cost of the double rainbow li is 650 and I paid 599. Definitely still very expensive but every little bit helps. Hey Steve, I appreciate your positive feedback! I use a DCF ground cloth. I tried the polycro ones, however, in windy conditions they can be annoying. (In my experience) I also found that in rocky, or desert areas they get tears pretty easy. I just ended up getting a dcf one, after trying several kinds over the years. I like it because it has stake loops around the edges, where I can either stake, or tie it down. The one I had was by mountain laurel designs. Their "duo" size that they make, and it was great but it got stolen (long story) Anyway it was only about a 2.8 oz "weight penalty " for the ground sheet, and worked great. To replace it though, I went with one by zpacks that I got on sale, and my new one is a slighty stronger dcf. zpacks had more size options, and I happened to catch a sale. A lot of UL people don't use a ground cloth with their dcf tent.. but I like having one. To me it's worth the little bit of extra weight.. and will definitely extend the life of any tent.. also, the dcf kind I use, can be set up as a makeshift tarp if you needed or wanted .. Plus I like having that extra layer because I use an inflatable sleeping pad. if you want to cowboy camp, it's nice having something like a tyvek, dcf, or sil Nylon ground sheet..It really just depends on the person..There are lots of options for ground cloths. I know a lot of people love those polycro ones because they are so light and cheap, but for me they just weren't a good fit. I like being able to stake down my ground cloth if needed. But the dcf ones definitely will be the more expensive option.. I do recommend getting some kind of zipper care for the zippers on any UL tent..especially if you're doing a long haul/thru hike. Zippers will eventually get dirt etc in them, and can fail or get jammed..I found that using a simple zipper care every once and a while eliminated those issues..I use one I found that's odorless, no mess, no crazy chemicals etc..it comes in a little chapstick like tube, and works great! Thank's again for watching! Let me know if you have any other questions. Happy New Year!

      Thank you so much Bryan. Great information you have sent me. I'm a little put off the Dyneema Stratospire Li. Thinking more on the Stratospire 1. The only think is it's hard to tell the interior space by watching videos, I have also measured it out on the floor. Think the ss 2 might be too big and have a big footprint. Do you know much about the Ss 1. Totally agree about using footprints. Why pay all that money on a tent and not look after the floor.Thanks Steve

    • @bawattsyl
      @bawattsyl  3 роки тому +2

      @@stevesdaysoff2759 yeah it just depends on how much space you like having and what you're comfortable with.. the strat 1 is a great single person tent. I think it weighs in at just under 40 oz.. the floor dimensions Floor Width: 32 in / 81 cm (floor can widen to 40 in / 102 cm)
      Floor Length: 86 in / 218 cm
      The notch li is kind of their dyneema version of it. I love Tarptent and they have always done me proud! I have the cloudburst 3 (which is actually probably my favorite aside the weight)
      The StratoSpire Li , but my StratoSpire Li was stolen.. so I got double rainbow li..as the StratoSpire li wasn't available to replace at the time..I reaaly like the double rainbow and have found certain ways to reaaly make it great in high winds or bad weather..i bought one of their blemished models for a discount.. which carries the same warranty and really i didn't see any faults. But a lot of companies are now offering blemish models of tents, quilts or whatever they are selling..if possible I always take those deals because I've found i generally can't find any " blemishes " and save a good deal of money depending on the item..

    Thank You very much for this review. One thing that catches my eye is how far off the ground the material is on the vestibule ends - to what degree does this allow wind/rain to blow up under? and if it does get in, does it get through the mesh? Thanks Again

    • @bawattsyl
      @bawattsyl  3 роки тому +2

      Wow you have a good eye my friend! I thought it might be a problem at first too but the bathtub floor comes up high enough where I never had a problem with water.. that said, I'm one of those people who does try and keep a clean tent ⛺ and I did find with the particular model; mainly I'm guessing because the whole inside is mesh, I found the I got more dust and fine dirt that came in during windy times. But I think this is due to both it being double wall, and it does take time getting a perfect pitch.. which I often didn't bother with just due to exhaustion from the day. But when the tent is pitched really well it does fairly well in most conditions. I went through some pretty rough storms and came out ok.. the one thing I would recommend if you get this tent is get some extra guy lines so you can tie it to the stake points at the 2 pitchout ends. Those are the two ends that have the little struts and velcro flaps. Otherwise you won't be able to put rocks over the stakes due to other webbing there. Hard to explain without seeing the tent and I know I'm probably doing a terrible job explaining this, but by tying a small guyline through the normal stake loop on those ends and then staking the end of that attached guyline instead, you can than place rocks over it if needed. Aside more dirt getting in then some of my other tents, I didn't find i had issues with crazy wind coming in and never had an issue with water getting in. I hope that helps, but let me know if you have any other questions. Unfortunately, I don't have the tent anymore. It was stolen, and when I went to replace it, it was out of stock, so I'm now using their double rainbow Li. But I put over 800 miles, roughly 2.5 months of backpacking with the StratoSpire Li and aside the things I just mentioned, didn't have any issues and was very happy with it. If you do get the StratoSpire Li, I'd highly recommend getting some of the tenacious tape mesh repair patches.. that tent has a ton of mesh, and if you're doing something like a thruhike, those patches can come in handy. I accidentally put a hole in the mesh with my trekking pole during a hasty setup during a storm. Totally my fault. But at the time I had no real way of fixing it properly. Wished I had, had some of those patches!

    very thin is it easy to tear?

    • @bawattsyl
      @bawattsyl  3 роки тому +2

      In my experience it is Not really easy to tear, however, tents like this (dyneema) are prone more to things like punctures.. this one; yes the outer layer is a pretty thin dyneema ..the bottom layer though, is much thicker, and more durable. The tent held up well during use for me... I did use a dyneema ground sheet from Mountain Laurel Designs. (Their "duo" / large size fits the bottom rectangle of this tent great) I will say, I did take extra good care of this tent while out trekking..ie..I took my time setting up and breaking down camp.. rolled it, and kept in a dyneema stuff sack..(despite what many suggest, or videos you may see, just bunching it up, and smushing it down into your pack is not a good idea.. ) dyneema lasts longest when rolled or folded. I know a lot of people are looking to save any gram of weight they can.. but for me, it was worth carrying the .5 oz stuff sack, and storing it properly. It will last longer if you take good care of it.. on a thru hike etc, most people just resign themselves to the idea, "oh all this gear is going to get torn to hell anyway" and while that's true in most cases just due to the time you're out there.. with a tent like this if you take good care of it, it can last 2 thru hikes.. you'll definitely want to carry some good dyneema repair tape with you if you are doing something like a thru hike, or long haul hike. If you do get a hole of any real size, I suggest taping the hole on both sides.
      I Hope this info helps! Thank's again for watching! Let me know if you have any other questions.

I found that helped a great deal in high winds.. also the 2 pitch out ends.. those are the ones that look like little triangles that have velcro flaps.. anyway those you may need to use extra guylines to do a dead man type stake out in high winds..because otherwise it can be tough to place a rock on these ends due to the webbing etc.. but you'll see what I mean.. its very easy to figure out despite my confusing message here..lol this is definitely a great tent! That sounds awesome! I know they sell this thing called a " side car" that basically makes one of the vesibules enclosed with bug netting. I know many people use that combo with a bigger dog. So about the stuff sack, I wanted to be able to fit the tent into the large side pocket. Which you can just stuff it in there if you want. But i wanted it to be in a stuff sack. The one that came with mine was a little too big to fit in that pocket. It could be done but it was a tight squeeze. And honestly the stuff sack I ended up getting, worked.. but it took very precise rolling of the tent to get it in the new stuff sack (which is the zpacks 18" Tall dry bag) it definitely fit in the pocket of the Mariposa better, however, it was much harder each morning getting the tent back into the stuff sack. It did get easier but i could see a lot of people not wanting to take the time each morning to roll up their tent a certain way. Looking back I'd probably just roll the tent up and stuff it into that pocket. If you get the tent, play around with it and see what works for you, and what you feel you would be comfortable with doing day in and out. You could also stuff the tent into the back mesh pocket of the Mariposa if you wanted.. lots of options:)

      I see you recommend a foot print which I will purchase. You talked about the Mountain Laurel Design DCF Ground Cloth Duo Size. Is that what you would purchase if you needed a new one?
      Did you do a thru-hike with this tent? I know this is considered a 2 person tent but you were only using it yourself to give yourself more room?
      I assume you had other tents before this one. Did you ever consider any other tents by Tarptent or what seems like the Tarptent Stratospire LI major competitor the Zpack Duplex? Also GG has a new tent "The DCF Two" which has a DCF tent body but a sil nylon floor.

      @@larryrush3414 the main difference between the tents you mentioned and this one is that the StratoSpire li is a double wall tent. Much better with condensation. Generally you don't have issues with double wall tents. I don't like that the duplex has that floating bathtub floor.. so if a huge gust of wind blows it can literally toss your stuff across the tent because their floor isn't anchor down whereas the StratoSpire li is. Yes the duo grounds sheet or zpacks makes good ones too. Yes I actually have the Tarptent cloud burst 3 tent which is my favorite aside the weight. Just love that tent. So much room and basically bomb proof in high winds. But it's pretty heavy for 1 person. My StratoSpire Li was actually stolen. (Long storu) and unfortunate it was sold out when I needed to replace it so I bought one of the blem models of the double rainbow li. Reaaly love that tent too. But yes I was using all these tents on thru hikes. I actually carried that 67 oz cloud burst 3 for 1200 miles of the pct🙃 the StratoSpire Li i did the Tahoe rim trail, JMT and another 600 miles of the pct.. so it only had about 950 miles on it when it was stolen;( the double rainbow i only have had for a little but I'm planning on taking it out west and redoing the desert section of the pct with it and then some areas in Oregon and Washington. The reason I like using a footprint is because it will just greatly extend the life of any tent.. and allowv you to cowboy camp if you want to try that. For me with my double rainbow li I bought one of the zpacks ground sheets because they had a wider variety of sizes and also theirs are made from 1oz dcf. Which basically only added an extra .25 oz over my duo which was only .75 dcf. The higher dcf material has a higher puncture resistance to it

It depends, you can remove the carbon fiber struts on the pitch out ends making it much more compact, however, i used the gossamer gear mariposa 60L pack and was able to get the tent (with struts still installed) into the tall side pocket. The trick was getting a different stuff sack. I bought the tall 18" dry bag from Zpacks.. the tent fit just perfectly in there and that allowed me to put it in that side pocket. On other packs, you could just attach it to the outside of the pack in this same dry bag. It did take a few times rolling it up to know how to roll it right so it would fit, however, from then on that's how I carried it. (In the Zpacks tall dry bag / in the tall pocket on the outside of the Mariposa) and again this was with the struts still installed. He once repaired a small rip I had for free (the rip was totally my fault, and I told him that.. but he still fixed it for free! ) if you down the line you get any pin holes etc in your fabric, and you've run out of the dyneema tape they provided, email him and he'll send more for free! I hope you enjoy your new tent, and have a great hiking season!

      I got the blemish version of this tent. Kinda didn’t have a choice. Since they’ve been out of stock for months. Since they’re in California, you basically just payed the sales tax.

    I'm trying to find a tent that's light AND withstands rain well. I have the z-packs duplex now and and not thrilled with it's condensation and saturation point. Any idea how wet you get in heavy rain like you described in that thunderstorm?

      Hi, thanks for your comment ☺I had great luck staying dry in this tent. As long as you have a good pitch, and use the extra 2 stake and ridge guy line option, this tent can take a pounding and still keep you dry. Unlike the duplex, it's a double wall tent.. which are much better in high condensation situations..occasionally I'd have a little on various points on the dynema part, but none ever leaked into the mesh part. Just ran down the sides of the dynema leaving me completely dry inside. With this tent there is a space between the dyneema and mesh sections, making it much harder for condensation to cause you any real problems., Of course choosing a good camp site will always help with any tent. But this is a pretty bomb proof tent when pitched with the 8 stake option. I did have to put rocks over my stakes in very high wind weather...especially when I was pitching in very sandy, lose type of dirt. But the double wall in my opinion will generally always outperform a single wall tent in the condensation issue; just by it's design. I had great experiences with this tent. There are a view other reviews on the tarptent website in this product's description describing how well it worked for them too.. definitely check those out as well:) I hope this helps some:)
