Gary Wilson's Incredible Sportsmanship Moment vs. Ronnie O'Sullivan: A True Gentleman of the Game

- GARY WILSON was hailed for his "sporting" gesture during his match with Ronnie O'Sullivan. While competing in the semi-final of the World Tour Championship in Manchester, O'Sullivan had a foul shot called against him.
Referee Paul Collier deemed O'Sullivan, 48, to have done a push shot - a shot when the cue ball and object ball are touching while a players cue is also touching the cue ball - as he potted the blue ball.
It came when the Rocket was still level at 5-5 with Wilson in the 11th frame in the best of 19 match and saw Wilson awarded five extra points.
Following the judgement, O'Sullivan and Wilson could be seen conversing over the table.

Gary Wilson is going to win something big soon ...he's like the quiet assassin
Ronnie’s lack of push (no pun intended) back tells me he thought it was
If Ronnie is saying Gary Wilson is a good guy, but he just comes across as such a lovely fella and he is a great player.👍👌.
Gary Wilson top bloke👍👍
Gary is going to be a great player, I was there at the Welsh Open this year when Gary got that brilliant 147 😮😮
"it wasn't a push shot"
Ali Carter - Hold my beer 🍺

👏GW, sure things going your way for some majors, keep plugging away, they’ll come👌👍
Looked legal from that camera angle.
That ref needs glasses , I’ve watched that shot several times, NEVER a push ball
this game is to clever for usa gumps to understand
It's "too" - Your friendly USA gump.
Useless Collier is. Seen him call a push shot numerous times when the shot is perfectly legal
For sure. I dont think he likes using the tools available.
any kind of push through impulse on the blue, and the blue would never have gotten in
A blind man could hear it was a push stroke
Rubbish
Great Gary!I think I saw this situation again in the past, again with Ronnie again with the same referee...
Blue, white and Cue ball went all to different directions, how the hell that was push shit ?
Usually the balls would need to be less than 1 mm apart for a double hit push shot foul to be a worry. When a leather qtip hits the qball the tip remains in contact with the qball for a distance of 8 times the compression of the leather. The softer the qtip then the wider the gap needed between the balls.
But if u aim very thickly on the objectball then u can get a double hit foul even if there is a very wide gap between the balls.
O'Sullivan's shot was not even close to being a foul of any kind, ie not a push (type 1), not a push (type 2), & not a double hit.
Thanks for sharing your insights on the technical aspects of the game!
A push shot (double hit) is likely when the balls are much further apart than that.
@@nakkadu
(1) We dont know whether the ref reckoned it was a double hit (qtip hits qball twice or more).
(2) Or whether it was the old fashioned push (qtip stays in touch with qball for too long & too far).
(3) Or whether it was the new fashioned push (qtip is in touch with qball when qball is in touch with object ball)(is this called a push in the rules?).
Except that we know that it was supposed to be (3), which it was not.
For sure we can get an accidental double hit with the balls a long way apart. But we can also get a nice clean screw back with the balls very close together. Here we might need to aim off center on the object ball, & use a bit of inside english with the screw (& of course use a circumcized follow throo).
@@atheistaetherist2747 What? You said the balls need to be "less than 1mm apart" for a double hit to be a worry".....I was just responding to that by pointing out that a double hit is likely even if the balls are much more than 1mm apart.
@@nakkadu
Ah ok sorry, i thort that u were referring to the dist apart in Ronnie's actual shot.
I think that the rules of billiards allow a push shot (type 3 above) if u play a fine edge of the OB. Not sure about snooker.
Re the dist apart. I can play a fullball follow throo loozer off the red (red sitting on theSpot), if my qball is at least 10mm clear of red (ie i can play a 6shot here).
Ronnie should respect that, Gary Wilsons a top lad 👌
No way was that a push shot.
The shot was legal and good on Wilson for saying it even though the call wasn't corrected.
Wilson is a gentleman not like Mr cocky
The ref needs to go to spec savers if he thinks the blue and white are touching 😂 theres about 20mm atleast between them
That's not what the foul was for. The ref felt that after Ronnie played the shot, his cue tip hadn't yet left the white ball before the white ball came into contact with the blue. So for a brief second the cue tip, the white ball and the blue were all connected. That is what a push shot is, and the foul was awarded for that.
I don't see the foul. What am I missing?
The cue, the cue ball and the blue were all in contact at the same time. Its a push shot, ref was right they usually are in snooker.
With an over head camera the ref can ask to replay on slow mo, would fix this situation. At this level of the game with so much at stake, I'm surprised the players haven't pushed for it. Then on the other hand, we would miss all the faff & controversy talk after😊
You don't see the foul because there wasn't one
@@Firestarter76love the intended pun 😅
@@randomeyes, It was just sitting there waiting to be said😂
These refs really are pieces of work!
The ref got it right.
Go to bed Ali, you are drunk.
@@memphisdaniels3218😂
I reckon it was a foul, purely bcz it came off all weird and I just don't think Ronnie intended that. His cue ball control is better than that
It looked a legal shot

no it didn't. Actually I'm quite concerned the refs don't call fouls more often when the balls are that close to each other.
@@moviemaster00000 if it was a push shot he wouldn’t have got the control on the cueball in the way he did. Ronnie knew it wasn’t a push shot and so did Gary.
@@TheJohnCooperShow what control? He got left spin on the cue ball which would have happened if you push this shot.
@@moviemaster00000 he played it with left spin. if you play a push shot you dont get that kind of reaction off the cushion like that
Great call, with the left hand side on and proximity of the balls, it looked like it 'could be'... however the ref called it, he stuck by his guns (as he should do), fair play, you can't start discussing rules with officials, they already move the balls if the players aren't happy when replaced when a miss is called (even if its correct on the screen). Referee was said he "was sure" and Gary said he "he didn't think it was", so GW wasnt even sure.. Trying to influence a result/decision could be construed as cheating/fixing. Players/People may think he's being genuine, but rules are rules. Be anarchy if ref changed his mind.

How true. When have you ever seen a penalty decision be overturned in football when a player moans to the ref about it?...Never!
Utter nonsense, match fixing? He is questioning a call that went in his favour not trying to benefit himself.
@@muftydog that is not accurate to the situation, Wilson is not trying to persuade the ref to give a decision in his favour. This is more comparible to football players admitting to handling the ball or that it came off them when going out of play which, yes, happens.
for all the people moaning about it was against himself so yadda yadda, - doesn't matter, ref decision should always be final, hence there is one if its wrong then after the game discuss it, moan, cry, threaten to retire, whatever.. but not in the match..
It was a push shot and a foul, but as the referee no longer matters let's replace him with some dancers, and let the audience vote about the rules in real-time online.
Clear push shot, how are people not seeing it? As obvious as Ronalds shirt is bad.
The call from the Ref has to be accepted at the end of the day like those huge men accept it in Rugby and take it. We do not want VAR in any other sport because we know what it has done to football because of the different or even corrupt calls when watched in slow motion. While I admire Wilson for his intention on this he is just undermining the Ref. Suck it up and let the Ref go to bed at night thinking he did the best he could have.
Didn't look like a push 😂
It was a push shot, Ronnie new it was, if he had jabbed the cue ball he would have been ok but it was a very exaggerated follow through. Don’t worry Ronnies fell out with refs before over less then that, he knew and that’s why he accepted without trouble.
Where was VAR🤔
Ref was asked to check it but didn’t
Var was checked and a penalty to Liverpool was awarded.
GW shouldn't even be getting involved. It's the referee's decision. If Ronnie thought it wasn't a push shot he would have argued the decision himself. Looked and sounded like a push to me. Either way, not GWs place to argue.
At one point does Gary say ‘I thought it would have hit the yellow?’ Referring to the path the white ball would have taken if it had been a push? I’m not bad at snooker and that looks true to me but maybe I’m just not that good ha! difficult call but not a push for me.
I guess like gary i feel the same. If you achieve or win something as a result of an ambiguous dodgy ref decision, the feeling of glory is tarnished with doubt and a sense of cheating,it's never the same
I reckon it was a foul, purely bcz it came off all weird and I just don't think Ronnie intended that. His cue ball control is better than that
Can’t say about Ronnie’s shot it still stays a little discretion but Wilson’s red which was claimed a foul wasn’t really one

Nothing wrong with that shit, most refs in any sport now want attention. Refs hate the fact tv will mostly make their daft decisions wrong.
Yet still get paid to do that job.....
It *was* a push shot!?? I’m don’t know sure why there was a fuss over it??
Clearly it wasn't
@@djsteves554 I can not fathom how the ref and 3-5% of people in the comments think that is a push shot.

Well he's from the north, so I expect nothing less of course.
Never been foul ... glasses maybe an option for paul.
Thanks for sharing your insights. please subscribe to the channel.
At the end of the day any player would always own up to a push shot, or foul, half the time these so called great refs don’t spot the fouls when players do them, that ref hasn’t a bloody clue, if he lost some weight he might see more, 😂😂
Paul collar needs to stand down everyone could see it was not a push shot😮

you must be a ronnie fan.. So next time try to enjoy snooker as well.
Trying to interfere with a referee's decision about your opponent is NOT sportsmanship! It's making an A-hole of yourself
What? Wilson thought the ref got it wrong in his own favour so politely questioned it and asked if he was sure or if he was going to check it, the ref said he was sure so Wilson accepted it, he didn't do anything wrong just questioned the referees decision on a matter, that actually benefitted him, as he is entitled to do either way.
@@memphisdaniels3218 If the ref got something obviously wrong - pink on the blue spot - then it's sensible to point it out.
But where it's a subjective matter of opinion then surely the ref's decision is final - querying it serves no purpose - it's tantamount to saying, 'my opinion is better than yours'
referees decision is final, he shouldn't have been undermining him surely
The refs can review decisions on the monitors, all he asked was clarification of the decision and if he was checking it or if he was sure, to which the ref said he was sure and the game recommenced. It was more a case of checking the decision was final before taking his shot really, but players have every right to ask for the clarification and if they will be checking it on the screens
That is no way a push shot. Absolute rubbish. The follow through on the cue tells you that.
The ref was correct it was a push shot. The cue, the cue ball and the blue were all in contact at the same time.
In which dimension?
Tiro correcto
That was never a push shot. Ya numpty 🙄
Osullivan would never done that for Gary
Makes a change …. Normally to busy throwing his toys out of his pram 🙄
Appalling refereeing. Needs to be retrained or replaced.
Apart from the fact he was right, it was a push shot.
It wasn't a push
