And I cannot for the life of me get behind how white people place all of this energy into "all white people aren't racist" yada yada, (which we already know btw, it's not ALL of you, IT'S most you) when it's much much easier to just acknowledge the privilege you have and use that to elevate black people's voices and change the way MOST of y'all act towards minorities. Y'all act as if this "false claim" that all white people are racists actually affect y'all in real life, like if you'd just walk away from the internet and stepped out of your houses for once you'd know white people hardly get repercussions for being racist so take several seats.

      He literally just said that being racist doesn't make you a bad person, another way of saying it is, is not so much that being racist is negative in it self but the effects of unacknowledged racism is, therefore a way to tackle that it is by making it visible, addressing it. @James Chris What he was saying was that unconscious bias arise in people who arent poc to devalue poc through the media they consume. An example of this is before the 2000s if a description of a criminal was aired on the news, if it was a black man, they'd say a black man however if it was a white man the broadcasters would just say *a man*
      That doesn't seem big, but that unconscious thought that someone isnt as good of a human because of their race gets reaffirmed everytime it happens. That's what subconcious racism is. We have to acknowledge it if we want change

      You can't solve a problem you can't even see. People want to think of themselves as reasonable. Progressive people tend to want to think of racism and sexism etc as the "bad people" and while it is true people may support other cultures, rally for them, feel that they are an ally, all of us need to admit to ourselves that america as whole(media, schools, american holidays, the beauty standard, "professional behavior", privilege every single corner really) has been influenced by all of those prejudices and whether you think you are the most woke person in the country or not, you have been affected on some level by all of those things. That is the main problem I see with even progressive allies, they want to help, sure, they want to point out things, they want to rally, but they don't want to admit that they have been affected by prejudices in ways they might not even think about. They are so busy looking for every one else's bigotry that they can't see that maybe sometimes they are the problem or need to look at parts of them to improve themselves and thus the way marginalized people feel around them. People always look at me sideways when I tell them that it's super important for me to see the way racism, sexism, all the isms and internalized homophobia has made me default a certain perspective. I know people hate the term micro-anything but it's all the little shit too. The shit you think might be petty. We must fight against a culture that pushes isms down our throats and of course we need to fight against hate groups and laws that keep marginalized people unsafe and not equal but we must also pay attention and notice the things WE OURSELVES are guilty of and recognize them and work on ourselves to change our perceptions. It's easy to point and blame, it's a lot harder to say "maybe I am the problem in this situation." Sorry rant over. And if I misspelled something get the fuck over it!

      @@gulliver1755 Telling white people that they can't speak on their experiences with racism or have no room to say anything is only deterring white people from being an ally, saying a white person will always be racist and a born racist just because their skin color is fucked up. White people don't have a choice and it's not their fault they are born white. And living in a white society and thus benefiting from white being the majority is not an active choice, you don't just decide "oh yes, I'm going to participate." As opposed to what? Is the only way a white person can redeem themselves is by moving out of America? That's utterly ridiculous.

    • @christmastiger
      @christmastiger 5 років тому +14

      Playful Fruit Don't think of it like you're trying to reach some end goal of being not racist because it's not possible. The hardest part is accepting that--even if you didn't choose it--you are inherently born with privileges that other people aren't. "White people dont have a choice being born white" and black people didn't choose to be born into a world that is racist against them. You have to just accept what you are born with and acknowledge all that holds for you and try to see things from other group's perspectives. People get so defensive when they are called racist because no one wants to be that but instead of defending why you think white people arent racist just stop and realize the world was made for you, everything in media and practices is catered to your interests, you already have so many opportunities it looks like a sore winner when you are basically saying "I get everything but I don't like it when people tell me that!"

    I am a white man from rural Alabama and I agree with everything they’re saying: prejudice is a real thing I know I am fighting against every day. I went through the phase of, “I’m not racist look at all my black friends!” But in the same breathe “so and so speaks really well. He’s a great communicator.”
    The one thing I have a slight problem with is Bob’s example of the Texas businessman. I grew up with a standard American accent and can travel anywhere without anyone realizing I’m from the south. My dad however has a true Alabama accent. He has worked for an international company for 2 decades. He has learned he must practice coat-switching to gain the respect of his peers. Middle America might be seen as up on a pedestal in our LGBT community but that doesn’t mean folks out here aren’t marginalized. Remember Chi-Chi Devayne when she said, “I’m from Shreveport, LA. Being country is not thing thing to be.”

      Bridget Hinojosa true, but bob‘s big argument at the beginning about “all white people are ...“ might be a nice controversal statement to launch a discussion, but a very unprofessional and unscholarly way if that is your main point of the debate. you can‘t ask people to never generalize, as aja asked for later on, but at the same time put every single individual (in the states or even the world) that was born with a certain skin complexion into one category. i‘m sorry, i love her drag and basically everything else she said in this video, but that was either intentionally polemic and or just hypocritical, which both does not look so great on her.

    • @johnnydtractive
      @johnnydtractive 5 років тому +24

      @@brunoir283 It's not about skin complexion, it's about being born into a culture of white supremacy that privileges white skin & teaches people to internalize positive associations with whiteness & negative associations with Blackness or being a person of colour. When you're born into a culture of white supremacy like America (built on slavery, racial oppression, denial of rights, l*nching, over-policing & over-incarceration etc), you breathe in racism the way you breathe air.
      No one is saying each individual white person is a bad person--what people are saying is that white people are raised on white supremacy, & if you don't realize it & work to unlearn & change it, you will just blindly perpetuate the racism that is all around you in the culture.

    Everything being said here is so important. The point about the Texan not being judged isn’t accurate but the point still stands. Southern accents are seen as ignorant, stupid, and backwards. I have been the brunt of constant jokes in professional settings because of the way I speak, and I’ve had concepts shot down entirely because it sounds “ridiculous” but a northern colleague can present the same idea and have it well accepted. Despite my education and background I’m expected to play the role of the idiot. Now folks who stay in the south don’t have to worry about that nearly as much but when we leave we are forever marked as hillbillies unless we learn to speak like a city person or northerner.

    I would love to see a group of diverse, queer icons within the community discuss topics like this as a tour. I know it would never be as popular as a comedy tour, or a music tour, but I would be willing to pay a lot to be in the same room and have a discussion about these topics, such as gender issues, racial issues, social issues etc, because this group of people is arguably one of the best groups of people to do this. Correct me if I'm wrong but of the five people, there are three people that identify as transgender, one that identifies as non-binary, they are all people of colour (each with their own culture/heritage), and being people with a larger following than most people that has allowed them to travel the world, they all have such a wide perspective of these topics that they have witnessed from all possible angles. I just feel like as great a job as these videos do at asking and answering these questions, a tour to see this in person and discuss these topics within a safe space, instead of online or on the street, is the only way the community can be fixed. I know this is something that will never happen, but that's just my opinion.

    I love Bob and this conversation, although I don't agree 100% with what he says.
    All people discriminate to some degree in their head (bias), towards skincolour, sexuality, gender etc. and we need to acknowledge that, but there's a big difference between that, and outright discriminating against other people because of their colour or other things.
    We need to get rid of the notion that only some people can and some people can't discriminate against other people, because everyone can do that, and anyone can experience it.
    Experiencing SYSTEMATIC discrimination on the other hand, is very different, and different types don't apply to everyone, straight white men especially.
    America is a very segregated country that's inherently racist in many ways. I agree with what they're saying about the "stop acting like this race", however I don't agree with the principles of culture and behaviour stemming from the colour of your skin, and not your family, your personality, country etc.
    Behaviour and culture is taught, not genetically inherited, and we need to speak about it as such.

    • @cargoloyalty9978
      @cargoloyalty9978 5 років тому +3

      I totally agree with both you and Bob. I think it would’ve been more accurate to say everyone, not just white people, is racist in America just due to living in this culture. Everyone will have biases they can’t control because racism isn’t based in logic, but emotions and conditioning. At the same time it’s important to realize that needs to be corrected. Having racial stereotypes doesn’t make you a bad person and it isn’t your fault, only if you realize you have them and do nothing about it, then you kind of are a bad person.

Obviously I understand that POC still experience racism and it needs to stop, there is no excuse for being a racist NO MATTER whether you are white OR black. However, just because someone is white, doesn’t mean they are a racist, PERIOD. White people are also discriminated against because they are white, just look at South Africa. And I am asking this, with all sincerity and willingness to understand your perspective, by your own logic, that being white in America makes you racist, is the same true for people of color? Are we all perhaps indoctrinated to feel threatened by one another to continue the systematic racism our country was founded on into the future, rather than using our own individual hearts and critical thinking skills to discern for ourselves and do the right thing, despite the horrific atrocities committed by people who share the same skin color? I agree our country, the government, law enforcement, judicial system, beauty industry, fashion, banks, etc. the list goes on, is systematically racist and is straight up evil. Do we hold an entire race responsible for the crimes committed by individuals working together cause they are socio/psychopaths? because, with all do respect, that sounds racist.
