- Ahead of his review for the October 2023 issue of BRM (see www.world-of-railways.co.uk for more details), Andy York examines the sound functions and speed control of Rapido Train's 'Lion' 0-4-2 locomotive.
I saw Lion in action at Tyseley Steam Trust back in the very late 70s, possibly 1980. I was a BR shunter in the carriage and tmd depots at the time. Beautiful looking machine at the time. Not seen or heard of it since, until the models were announced. Nice presentation. The roar definitely a gimmick, but fun. No mention of price though ?? Scarey!!
There are some prototype subtleties captured in the model you haven't spotted.
Lion's driving wheels are not matched pairs (different numbers of spokes between the front and rear driving wheels), and the horn guides are different between the front and rear driving wheels. The bolts on the frames are not uniform but the same mixture of round and hexagonal heads as per the prototype too.
Of course the model is sold as being of 1929 condition not 1830s (see Anthony Dawson's book). As built Lion and Tiger had a different boiler design with domes and safety valves on the boiler barrel and a low firebox (similar to other Large Samsons 0-4-2s and the 2-2-2 Patentee types). Current boiler is a 1859 Mersey Dock & Harbour Board replacement with a plain boiler barrel (possibly suggesting it could have briefly carried a saddle tank before being repurposed as a pumping engine).
The L&M livery in the late 1830s /1840s would of had dark green boiler cladding rather than varnished wood appearance.
Hola buen dia excelente vid😮eo muy linda locomotora abrazo grande😃👍
Is that Lion? Or is it the Titchfield Thunderbolt?
Both. Lion played Thunderbolt in the Titfield Thunderbolt
Awful sound, I often couldn't make out what you were saying. Such a shame. Liked the video anyway!
Since Lion hasn’t been in steam since the 80s, there will be limited recordings of her in steam
Nice video of an ultimately disappointing model. Coming out second, you'd imagine it would have the edge over Hornby, but it just doesn't seem to. A model like this, to me, is all about detail, not haulage and with less detail over all, that which is there unrefined and crudely applied as well as missing paint and an awful boiler seem, all I can think of is what could have been...
