Thanks to you Dennis another one of my reels has New Life. I really enjoyed your video's You do a fantastic job in explaining everything anyone can learn to service there reels
Thank you for the instructions Dennis. My hard washer below the main gear was broken and the drags were fused. I got the reel back in service today with some parts from Mystic. My daughter and I will be catching rock cod Sunday for her birthday!
Hi Dennis, Enjoyed seeing this "Old Line under the Reel Sleeve" fix. Can understand how it ended up in the Reel bucket !! Glad you could give this reel the TLC it needed and are making such good progress on the Reel bucket projects. You are definitely a force of Nautical Nature !! Onward to the New Year ! Stay well, Cons
yes you can use tiburon or acc. frame the only diff is the take apart screw. try to find one with a broken take apart screw hole you don,t need it anyway and youll pay less.i made two a501s and a 501 half s..
Fascinating analysis of the weaknesses in this reel. I enjoy watching you do a service on these conventional reels but freely admit I don’t know very much about conventional reels. I’m supposed to finally get the Ocean City 300 that I found way before Christmas. I knew when I bought it there would be a delay in getting the reel shipped. By the way you’re pushing the envelope on the use of 1 paper towel. I’ve been working on a Mitchell 386 that I told you about. I can’t solve the problem with it. It is not a bent axle shaft, bearing or gearing. The problem starts when you attach the rotor to the reel. I might be sending you this one. I’m baffled. Just bought a Shimano MLZ 40 new in the box. Hope it is a good one. Happy new year Dennis. Another great informative video as always!
Are you missing a washer in the rotor assembly? I am not sure of the configuration, but manufacturers often put a thin water where they connect the rotor and that frees it up. Wishing you a Happy New Year - Dennis
It should not be an issue as a personal reel that receive care. These reels are used in a commercial fleet so they are used hard and not well cared for. These reels have lexan not bakelite plates- which are actually very tough and were an attempt by Penn to make a reel that could be assembled faster and with less manual labor. But yes they can buckle especially when using heavy drag and reeling against same heavy drag will round the gear sleeve.
As always - Thank you for the additional information Armando. I can tell that the side plates are a different material because they clean up differently that the others. I have never liked this set up because of the effort to remove the gear side plate. To me, they should have put the two screws on the bottom of the gear side plate as long as they were putting the other four in the crossbars. I have seen a lot of these come in with bent frames, so I thought I would mention it. Best wishes for a healthy and Happy New Year - Thanks again Dennis
Hey Dennis thank you very much for the informative video. I was wondering if you could help me find parts for my Okuma reels. I have two Okuma reels that I absolutely love. I’ve had them for about 15 years. One is the Okuma Epixor EF40 and then I also have an Okuma Epixor EF50. Trying to locate gears and bearings for them but I cannot find them anywhere. I went to one of Okuma parts dealer and purchase three gears and he only sent me one that was correct. Do you have a good resource where I can buy Okuma parts? Thanks a bunch. - Jim.

Thank you Dennis, that was great info on the 500s. Much appreciated. Wishing you all the best for 2021.
Happy New Year to you as well. Thanks for watching - Dennis
fantastic video, can you list the website where i can get the wrench tool to remove the bolt from the reel.
Yes - it is the Alan Tani wrench and you can get it on the mystic parts.com website
Thank you for that information. I did not know that was a weak point of a 500s. If I get a Tiburon frame will that help. Is there a cheaper route?
I am not sure they make that frame for the 500S and the 500 frame won't work. Not much you can do with these. Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle Thats true. They were an attempt by Penn to save
money. It didnt work. Some of them have a really nice red aluminum spool though.
