243 East Ridge Rd was owned by Dr Antonio Giorgi and it looks like the home was used as a clinic at one time. The house was built in 1920.

The "Ridge" that those houses are built on was formed thousands of years ago by a glacier that formed Lake Michigan. Thus the name ridge road. Once very long ago that ridge was the southern shore of Lake Michigan.

Those were great houses back in the 60s and 70s. Sad to see what has happened to them. Back in the 70s as a teeneager I mowed lawns to save money to buy a car, remember doing a yard for a woman that had a house, same side of Ridge Rd, a few blocks E of there. Taught piano out of her house, Wish I could remember her name. We didn't realize how great life was back then, grateful to have grown up in Gary at that time, lot of good memories!

That use to be my old paper route. Gary Post Tribune. The last home with the security on the windows and doors may have been owned by Nick Bikos. Him and his brother owned multiple movie theaters in Gary.

I too remember when those houses were pristine! Of note, that garage you were in was particularly fascinating to me when I was a child. Of course, I was never inside it, but I knew it went underground. Who would have thought 50+ years later I would get to see the inside of it this way?

I grew up right down the street and I definitely remember all them and I always wanted to know what those garages looked like. I remember watching people cut the grass on that property with the lawnmower in a rope was always so well-maintained. If you’re interested in seeing more of this, we actually walk through these places a couple years ago. I appreciate you sure your memories and I agree with you 100% it was pretty fascinating to see it now even if it’s just the shell of what it used to be. Definitely ashamed all these houses have to look like that especially on main road going through Gary. It definitely gives a city a bad look.

Grew up in Gary in the 60's. Had a drummer who lived in glen park so we drove past those houses quite a bit and always looked at them in awe. A couple of weeks ago I drove down ridge road and once again I was in awe, damn. Great memories of a time long gone.

Hey, I am from Cleveland, not Gary, but I lived in Indiana for 2 years in Indianapolis. I got to come up to Gary a couple times, rode the NICTD South Shore into Chicago a couple times. To me, it was very reminiscent of Cleveland. I wish I could have seen Gary in the 60s or 70s when industry was still running before it fell apart. I work with a guy who is from Gary also. Gary reminds a lot of Youngstown, Ohio. Youngstown is weirdly, strangely quiet. Many houses were left abandoned for years I took pics of in the early 2000s, they have all been knocked down now. East Cleveland, a city next to Cleveland did the same thing, went thru and has torn down hundreds of houses and apartments.

Thank you for sharing those memories, Danielle I can remember watching people mow the grass and thinking the same thing. I can remember seeing a man with a rope, tied to the lawn mower and lowering it down and back up on that property. It’s hard to believe they look the way they do now, but I did never get a chance to see what those garages looked like either. I was pretty excited about that. It’s a damn shame but all we can do is just remember those good memories and thank you for taking the time to let me know you enjoyed the video. I really appreciate that.

I grew up right down the street on 47th and Cleveland and I remember driven by them houses when I was a kid and they looked like they belonged to such rich people. They where just beautiful and with all the crime in Indiana and Gary. Why can't they get people out there doing community service? Why do the taxpayers have to pay for it? 😢

    • @user-jl3dd6rf7d
      @user-jl3dd6rf7d 5 місяців тому

" They" or the crowd with the connections and the deep ,vast pockets,,....yeah they don't pay much for taxes..And our contributions to the Treasury don't add up so fast..So there is little movement with such things..
These heavy hitters? Well see they don't care about community or civic pride,or honor,or ethics..They care about money.About how to avoid giving it up to anything that doesn't
directly benefit them..They have been busy gutting the coffers and policy changes in 1980 or so were devastating to our middle class segment of the economy..They know one thing: Take it all and leave nothing.
They are at it every day.they only know to take and take...no such thing as enough..They won't stop until they burn it all down...That is why ..Gary still
Gets revenue. Its not for the city though..It's for the big hungry snake.
They believe they are entitled because
We are less than.We love Ridge Road.
      They aren't human..they don't get it.
It has been painful to watch..I really don't know if justice will prevail..
It damm sure don't feel like it.

To have those great memories of when you were a kid is wonderful because what it was shows you what it can become again one day. You know it's potential because you lived through the best days of this neighborhood. That gives you a different kind of vision then young folks who only see the emptiness and abonnement. To tell your stories and memories of a different time is so important for todays and future generations Paul! It gives people a sense of hope and incentive to bring it back to what it was. Your memories for others are like the rainbow after the rain. It's sad to see how it is now but there is hope because of the personal memories you share. I can just feel the future changes you bring not just because of the visual effect from your videos but also because of your invisible memories to others that you verbalize and bring to life for them. That brings hope to so many that what it once was it can become again. You are an incredible person. Paul! Carry on!!! .... Who is that weirdo at the end though? 😂😂😂

My Dad had business contacts in Gary late sixties early 70s. I am 69 years old and when I tell people how Gary wad back then to today its ridiculous. Those fine homes the stores, the neighborhoods all mostly free from the thugs, murderers Gary went from its heydays to a blight. No one takes responsibility. Residents try till they age out, politicians, worthless, police,?? Where? State and federal money? Where did it go. Do any people vote there for a change? Dont talk about burned out drug dens. Create laws to give owners 2 years to fix it or bulldoze. Like I say if all the police and monies that came into Gary what got fixed? You have to give a crap about something. Ad far as US Steel. I worked a life of half my career I drove 30 miles or better. Get over yourself. Chicago from Gary half hour. Indiana has plenty of laws to criminalize dead properties and people doing crimes. People dont want to clean it up? Or maybe free government paychecks. Not talking retirement checks. You Can do better.

I remember reading Gary was contracting demolition crews to clear entire neighborhoods of abandoned houses. The reason was to get rid of potential crack houses, and easier for the Police to patrol. Anyway a wrecking crew Forman halted dozing 2 homes on his list. His boss was furious and demanded he finish the contract. There was something about the design of these 2 particular homes and Gary historic was contacted. Good thing too because they turned out to be Frank Lloyd Wright designed homes and were saved from being torn down!

I remember reading that article myself. It’s crazy the difference between the 70s 80s and then now.

Thanks for this video I have always wondered how the garage connected to the house. That must have been the height of convenience. The garage is huge.

You’re very welcome. I think a lot of people thought the same thing because those were never accessible. I was very surprised to see the condition and how huge they are. Basically, as far as just the garage itself, it could be cleaned up really nice and storage at least six cars in there comfortably.

Why were some of them so big? The people had several cars? Or were the houses lacking much storage space?
My mother had family on the east side of Bdwy off of Ridge. Cousins and their families. It all did look well taken care of back then in the early to mid-60's.

Steel mill layoffs, great white flight that's what happened to Gary. Isn't this Glen Park?? My husband worked at Inland Steel from 1972 to 1997. So sad there was a lot of gorgeous old homes that is gone or destroyed.

If the there wasn't so much corruption i think Gary would have a better chance, these people deserve better.

I agree with every word you just said. It’s very irritating to see that no matter how many years go by the corruption still continues.

Do you realize that Ridge Road; from Chase Street to I-65 is the absolute worst stretch of Ridge Road if you travel from Illinois to almost the Michigan borderline??? I complained to Mayor Prince about this stretch, as we know he did nothing about anything as mayor!!!! Hopefully Young Melton will use that money wisely to clean this city up!! The previous mayors don’t realize that first no one is going to invest in a dirty trashed out city!! There is rehabbing going on and a house just sold down the street from where you were, but will all of them sell? Thank You, Storm for all you do ❤ Sorry I have missed the last two Fridays with you, but We have just become new Great Grandparents and have been traveling down I-65 !!💙😊

First of all congratulations Nadine on being great grandparents that is awesome. I have traveled exactly like you said from Illinois to Michigan and it looks terrible on that road and just before you get into Black Oak. Hopefully these videos can get some stuff done for the next generation. Thank you for always reaching out and taking the time to leave comments and thoughts. I really appreciate that and I always look forward to reading them.
Once again, big shout out to you and for becoming great grandparents that is awesome!
