I am about to weld studs to the boat deck, can anyone with experience explain how severe heating of the plate will happen on the other side? I am using 12mm studs and plate is ca 5 mm. Most of the other side is open, but some is covered by potentially fire hazardous materials. I will test it ofc before burning down the ship 😉
Is base metal Preheat required on thick steels such as 4" A992 when using stud guns? I know minimum preheat and interpass temps are 225 when fillet welding studs.
Yes 1/2" diameter studs are routinely welded in the overhead. A properly designed ferrule contains the molten weld pool using a qualified welding procedure. The Nelson 800# would be good.

From memory, I think 10mm diameter is the max upside down due to weight of molten material pulling ferrule down.
