I saw ET, Back to the Future, Flight of the Navigator and Who Framed Roger Rabbit? at the State (there may be more but I was only a kid in the 80’s). It was closed for a while during the time they filmed WFRR? in there and the grand reopening coincided with the release of the film. We queued all the way down the block on opening night as tickets were only £1 and my brother has always been convinced that he sat in the same seat as Bob Hoskins did in the movie 😂 My Mum would never let us sit in the stalls as the seats were always damp and mouldy, even back then. We always got bored when the organ would rise up from the stage and play a set before the film started. Being kids, we just wanted to get to the main feature! It always was creepy AF in there and it looks like it’s lost none of that charm since 🤣. Jay Kay can be heard speaking about making Deeper Underground there in 1998 here ua-cam.com/video/AWHfZvKQ1JY/v-deo.htmlsi=gIi_7UbGKvycevqv and mentions how they flooded the entire cinema and then made him submerge himself in the filthy, mouldy water. He said he was itching for a week after that! I heard it was sold recently for £500k and they have since removed pretty much all of the alarms installed by the Wetherspoons crew. As another explorer on their recent video put it, they often do that just before a place is lost in a tragic fire…so don’t be surprised if it goes up in smoke sometime soon. I hope they tear it down, it’s always been an absolute eyesore and I was always baffled at how it got Grade II listed status! I mean, it’s surely beyond repair now, right?!

Wow that's amazing! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience for the state cinema in its prime🙏
I would agree it's defiantly quite a creepy location haha
I've always liked seeing the State tower but all the hoarding and boarded up window are an eye saw for sure! I'd say if weatherspoons pockets weren't deep enough to fix the place then it's too far gone at this point. It's a real shame because I really wanted to see what they could do with the place as they have revived many buildings just like it before.

@@UrbanRockDove no problem - happy to share! It would certainly take an enormous amount of money to fix everything now, and without a guarantee that they could get a good return on investment for the place as no one really goes to Grays anymore…even less so now they are heavily developing Lakeside to become a new town and expanding the leisure and entertainment facilities at the shopping centre. Shame as I really did want to have the opportunity to go inside and have a look again. Haven’t been there since 1989 so my last memories of it are from when I was 10 years old!

Yep, I used to go there all the time. It was either there or Themeside theatre.

Won a competition to see the original Star Wars there, along with many other films in the 70s

Superman 2, Return of the Jedi, multiple Disney movies, Twins, Moonwalker, Transformers: the movie.
I lived in Grays for 35 plus years (only recently moved away) and it breaks my heart to see the old girl in such a mess.
Grays was a great town growing up, but Lakeside killed it stone dead.

I saw dozens of films in the State between the late fifties and the early seventies. It really was a lovely cinema but it belongs to another age and now like a great beached whale is just rotting away.

I believe I saw Who Framed Roger Rabbit? which was also partially filmed inside the state.
I pass by it all the time, it's really heartbreaking to see what has happened to the building.
