I think it was just luck that they happened to warn Stuart in time. Originally, Smokey and Snowbell were going to just let Stuart stay with the Stouts (I get the impression that Snowbell asked that Stuart NOT be killed.) Later on, I think that Snowbell was just too afraid to call the whole thing off and face Smokey's wrath when Smokey said that he intended to have Stuart killed. Snowbell was more concerned with his ego and self-preservation than actually wanting Stuart dead. He wanted Stuart out of the way as he was upset to "have a mouse for a master". Other than his initial attack upon seeing Stuart, I don't think he ever wanted to hurt Stuart because he was a mouse. Snowbell is one of the antiheroes of the entire series (he's semi-helpful/semi-self serving in Stuart Little 2 as well, and he's so-so in Stuart Little 3.) I wish that they could have a Stuart Little 4 that really had him come around to being more heroic and less self-serving.
