Greta Thunberg and Kevin Anderson are among the world's most direct communicators and rigorous thinkers on the climate emergency. Here is part two of a fantastic, rare conversation between them, hosted by regular Climate Uncensored collaborator, Ingrid Rieser.

Thanks to all involved for this interview. It's so refreshing to hear this long discussion away from the soundbites. I particularly liked the rationale behind the personal action as a means to add credibility and weight to your own arguments, as that's how I see it. I know I can't change the overall outcome, but it sure has triggered a lot of conversations with friends, family & co-workers.
I'd previously listened to several of Kevin's talks and thought the way he stresses that it's not about some far off target - it's about minimizing the area under the curve, i.e. what are we changing today that's more important.
I wish I could meet them and just shake them by the hand and say thank you.
The 2 things that stood out to me, were firstly when Kevin mentioned climate colleagues who are not open about their insight into how serious the situation is, possibly out of a bit of vested interest in not wanting to highlight the lifestyle changes necessary, because of how it might impinge on their lifestyles. I think in terms of system dynamics, this is massively underestimated. This is not to suggest that all these people a knowing evil. Much of what we do is from unconscious bias, and we are only at best, partly aware of our bias. The problem in our modern society, is the head of every organization and influence in our societies is in the top 1%, or nearly there. So they have a vested interest, even unconsciously, in obstructing change to lifestyles, which might impinge on their lifestyles. Also, I strongly agree with Greta's points about billionaires, and how they can gain ridiculously praise for moderate and not particularly effective action, when actually being a bit of a climate villain. This is not hate or envy. Just noting again how it distorts the whole system. These are real obstacles to the necessary change. We grossly underestimate bias within our societies, especially of the powerful and wealthy, who have influence over everything.
I agree with the above and to add to it, i think there is probably a bit of the fear of lifestyle change in all of us, almost like why should i be the first to stop flying or have to walk and cycle everywhere or never buy new clothes or not eat meat etc, when everyone else is still getting to 'enjoy' those elements of life. People think i only have one life why should i live it like a pauper when others are living the 'high' life. I am not saying i subscribe to that point of view, but i suspect it has crossed most peoples minds. I think the driver for change has to be financially. People will change the most when it hits their pockets. That may be cynical but I suspect its the way you get from the fringes to the masses.

I have found Greta Thunberg and Kevin Anderson to be very inspirational people, each in their own way: Greta from her dogged determination to stand up against the status quo and speak truth to power and Kevin's academic and professional honesty in assessing proposed solutions for a lower-carbon world. Four years ago, I heard Kevin say that he had stopped flying to reduce his carbon footprint which meant he would never see members of his extended family in Australia again. That inspired me to stop flying as well. As a retired couple we can see enough of the world by driving (electrically of course).
I didn't know that about Kevin's family. I have a son on the other side of Canada. I flew there seven years ago and since then Skype has become a more than sufficient way to have great visits. I think if more of us take this stance, a new generation may think twice about atomising itself away from family, home, roots. I know too many people who fly to Australia to see a grandchild. Family must be the second factor after business in the amount of air travel.
More, similar content please. As a retired atmospheric scientist I have spent several years engaging with the public and the media. It can be a disheartening experience, but content like this gives those of us trying to make a difference some reassurance when our reserves are low.

I appreciate your insistence that individual change and system change are two sides of the same coin. Gandhi's starting point for activism was self-purification. Like Leo Tolstoy, he believed that only an individual whose soul is pure may begin to consider others in their surroundings. “Identification with everything that lives is impossible without self-purification… God can never be realized by one who is not pure at heart. Self-purification therefore must mean purification in all walks of life… purification of oneself necessarily leads to the purification of one’s surroundings.” I think not flying, being vegan, not shopping, etc. are all exemplary. Would you both consider please signing the Plant Based Treaty which sees diet change and policy change as going hand in hand?
Yeah, like, collectively the norms add up to a systemic issue and by adapting the norm personally you are mitigating the assumption that it is a huge hurdle socially.
The economic norms propogated by the wealthy elite are indeed a systemic issue. What do you have in mind when you say 'adapting the norm personally'?

Modern agriculture is oil dependent. If you buy your food you are buying oil.
To get off oil, you must grow your own vegies.
Your comment seems to be addressed to individuals, but ignores the lack of direct agency most have over their food production. Better than just growing your own veg, campaign for 'structural change', such as alternative agricultural and dietary practices that remove oil dependence.
how about we change how plants are grown and make all local, that can be done.
and i agree that growing own food is something the the future needs.
What if Biden declares climate emergency, would that be meaningful? How can we pressure him, if that's so?
I love Gretta! She is such an inspiration to our generation. She got an unique and mature prespective
I know, right? Amazing intellect for such a young person. Whenever I exclaim this in comments on UA-cam a lot of commenters say she is working for some sort of propagandized agenda, and I find myself having to defend her authenticity when I believe it is apparent. She deserves every bit of the admiration she gets!
