I'm 42 years old and this "teenage movie" has me more emotionally involved in the story and characters than almost all other more mature movies I've seen in the last ten or so years. Maybe longer. Truly exceptional writing that is believable and touching. Shame these scenes are not in the final version. Newt has some special scenes with Thomas that are missing which really makes Newt's death that much more powerful.
The "Maze Runner" trilogy can be viewed at different levels, superficially as teen films but also as very adult films. Besides being very well-made and acted, there are very adult themes and elements to the films. They have depth. Being multi-layered is a sign of a great movie. In time, they'll be recognized as classics. For example, take the original film "Planet of the Apes." You can watch that with a child-like understanding and be entertained. But, dare I say, as a sophisticated adult, we see it for the intellectually deep masterpiece it is.
Newt basically keeps the group together, which is what glue does to an object. I really love his personality and the way Thomas Brodie Sangster portrayed him. Newt has taught me a lot, it's safe to say he's one of my comfort characters
Why is Newt so inspiring? I find whenever I'm having a rough day and want to give up, I hear Newt's voice in my head saying, "You can't give up. I won't let you." So I watch this scene. I've lost count of how many times I've seen it. Enough that I have it memorized. It reminds me that Newt became the person he needed. When he needed comfort, no one was there. It is criminal they cut this scene from the final movie! Not only does it deepen Thomas' partnership with Newt (let's be real friendship is not a strong enough word when running for your lives) it's also a direct visual reference to the first movie! and the last movie when they're talking on the roof It's another beautiful way to tie the movies together
I'm gonna say that when Newt said he wouldn't let Thomas give up: it's because Chuck wouldn't let him give up if he was still alive. And that would probably mean Newt was being both himself and Chuck together.
One reason why I hated that Newt died was because he always said something really inspiring that made everyone keep going and push on (especially Thomas)

They shouldn't have cut this scene. Earlier in the movie, they had Newt getting on Thomas' case because he didn't have a plan for after they escaped, so this scene would've been good cause it shows that Newt actually supports Thomas after he's given some time to calm down and think it through

Ok not to be that person that seeks lgbtq+ content everywhere ,but that's exactly what im gonna do: ive had my gaydar tingling around newt ever since i read the books, and now that james dechner confirmed it, i just see it EVERYWHERE. I know people are joking that there was strong chemistry between thomas and newt, but I seriously think newt was pining for him. Just look at his FACE 1:06. "we all have our rolls to play." That LINE, his FACE, he just looks so numb. That moment has HUGE subtext considering all of the above.
Well, I'm not joking about the strong chemistry between Thomas and Newt. There is strong chemistry between them. It's even embedded in the Greek myth the "Maze Runner" trilogy was based on: "Theseus and the Minotaur." Thomas is Theseus, and Newt is Ariadne. In the myth, Ariadne loves Theseus. The actors, Dylan and Thomas, seem to have aware of this, and played the characters that way. I don't know how they felt about each other in real life, but they certainly seem to have bonded during filming, though.
I wouldn't call it a bad ending. It was a tragic ending because they loved each other so very much. That's why Newt killed himself, he didn't want to kill Thomas. Thomas is a tragic hero, and those nearest and dearest to tragic heroes always die. Indeed, the tragic hero always dies, too. That's their arc. So, if they were to make a fourth film someday, which I hope they would, Thomas should die in it. At least he and Newt would be reunited in the Elysian Field.
I'm glad at least 266,668 people have the privilege of seeing TBS act this scene. It's a great monologue and I wish they could've kept it in the movie.

I absolutely love this scene. I noticed almost all the deleted scenes have Newt in the them. Sad.

Not only does it deepen Thomas' partnership with Newt (let's be real friendship is not a strong enough word when running for your lives) it's also a direct visual reference to the first movie! and the last movie when they're talking on the roof It's another beautiful way to tie the movies together

They shouldn't have cut this scene. Earlier in the movie, they had Newt getting on Thomas' case because he didn't have a plan for after they escaped, so this scene would've been good cause it shows that Newt actually supports Thomas after he's given some time to calm down and think it through

Ok not to be that person that seeks lgbtq+ content everywhere ,but that's exactly what im gonna do: ive had my gaydar tingling around newt ever since i read the books, and now that james dechner confirmed it, i just see it EVERYWHERE. I know people are joking that there was strong chemistry between thomas and newt, but I seriously think newt was pining for him. Just look at his FACE 1:06. "we all have our rolls to play." That LINE, his FACE, he just looks so numb. That moment has HUGE subtext considering all of the above.
Also the subtle lip biting he does!
Well, I'm not joking about the strong chemistry between Thomas and Newt. There is strong chemistry between them. It's even embedded in the Greek myth the "Maze Runner" trilogy was based on: "Theseus and the Minotaur." Thomas is Theseus, and Newt is Ariadne. In the myth, Ariadne loves Theseus. The actors, Dylan and Thomas, seem to have aware of this, and played the characters that way. I don't know how they felt about each other in real life, but they certainly seem to have bonded during filming, though.

I wouldn't call it a bad ending. It was a tragic ending because they loved each other so very much. That's why Newt killed himself, he didn't want to kill Thomas. Thomas is a tragic hero, and those nearest and dearest to tragic heroes always die. Indeed, the tragic hero always dies, too. That's their arc. So, if they were to make a fourth film someday, which I hope they would, Thomas should die in it. At least he and Newt would be reunited in the Elysian Field.
