UK to hire foreign truck drivers amid Brexit supply shortages | DW News

  • Britain says it will issue thousands of emergency visas to foreign truck drivers to help ease supply chain problems that have led to fuel rationing and empty shelves at supermarkets. In the aftermath of Brexit, thousands of foreign drivers left the U-K, since they could no longer work visa-free. And now ordinary Britons are feeling the effects.
Despite government pleas not to panic buy fuel, long queues have built up at the pumps.
A shortage in lorry drivers has led to delivery bottlenecks across the UK, forcing some stations to close or to ration what fuel they have left. It's a nightmare for those who depend on the fuel for work.
Analysts say the driver shortages were caused by the pandemic and Brexit. Various sectors had previously warned that supplies would run short. Many supermarket shelves have been left empty for weeks.
The UK government, facing growing pressure, has now announced a temporary visa scheme for 10,500 lorry drivers and poultry workers. But this will hardly be enough to ease the pressure. Estimates suggest the UK is short of about 100,000 heavy goods vehicle drivers.
Frustration among citizens is growing, too. And with Christmas around the corner, the situation could get even worse.

@@deanbryce8263 But its not causing shortages and its kind of a weasel words comparison. Firstly, a large proportion of HGV drivers are seasonal workers, who aren't needed all year around, or work in different parts of the EU at different times of the year, depending on demand. Secondly, if all the problem was a shortage of drivers, shops just load up the trucks with a larger load and stockpile more on site (this is why there aren't the big shortages in EU supermarkets). Its a combination of other squeezes on the UK supply chain that's the problem.
The UK is also short farm workers (so when the truck does show up, its not able to take on a full load), shipping agents to fill out all that extra post-brexit paperwork (which delays shipments) and if your truck is going to be stuck in a queue for hours getting into and out of the UK, that basically means you need a lot more lorries and drivers to do the same job. And of course if there's a knock effect, such as not enough drivers to move fuel supplies, hence trucks don't have the fuel, this amplifies the problem.

would a foreign truck driver have a uk valid ADR (a qualification for carrying hazardous materials) and a PDP (Petrol Drivers passport) before they can drive a tanker in the uk....its not the problem of there being no drivers...in order to drive a tanker one needs both a valid ADR and PDP as well as HGV license.....someone with a HGV license cannot automatically jump into a fuel tanker and drive it without these qualifications..which takes 4 years to get, so i dont understand how foreign drivers will have the relevant qualifications to drive fuel trucks within the uk....shop delivery trucks yes..but fuel tankers??
