11:00 "prices reflect what people will pay and so people will pay what flights are priced" that is so deep lol
In other words, airlines price their tickets for as high as people are willing to pay. That's why ticket prices flying between two major cities with a lot of business travelers like from Singapore to London, and vice-versa, tend to be very expensive especially for First and Business class tickets.
Sounds deep but is really trite. Tautology.
Well done. I’ve worked for the airlines for twenty years, four of them as a reservation agent and sixteen of them as a gate agent. Fifteen of them for American and five with Delta. You’ve explained exactly how pricing is done. Don’t mind the trolls you’ve done a great job explaining pricing even explaining pricing buckets and fare inventory.
super late reply. is working for so many airlines normal? like... are those different jobs?

When I watched this video for the first time, I had no idea that I'd be studying an MSc in Air Transport Management three years later, and writing an assignment which involved analysis of US domestic airfares. Your channel played a part in deciding to study again, so thanks, Sam! Happy new year.

Me too, but if you look at his views on all his recent videos and compare it to his subs it is clear that his audience participation is off the charts.
Interesting topic, especially when you know the airlines doesn't even know that. They have to employ third parties company to retrieve their prices since their algorithm to compute the prices is too complex. I know that since I made an internship in one of those company
The 3rd party application providers provide those services much more efficiently, using their large software platforms and airlines need not focus on pricing.
This could be a reason. It is not possible to fix prices manually in highly completive, dynamic market conditions
It is almost like a stock market where different share prices keep going up and down based on many factors - within a day to across the year
Incorrect. Airlines "know". They purchase 3rd party software and services, as does any company. The airlines have dedicated departments to managing revenue management. The software is just a tool for the airline and they own all the data that they use to determine pricing and availability.
Hold on...If a one-way ticket costs nearly $1500 more than a full round trip, couldn’t you just book a round trip and simply not go on your returning flight?
lots of people do this. The term is skiplagging. Its against the terms of the ticket and some European airlines are suing the customers who most abuse these 'hacks'
@@louigee1450 They sue you for not letting them high jack you of your money wtf lmao
I noticed that and started doing it myself it works or you can use your returning flight by switching it out to another place as a one-way if you plane on only doing a one way plan ahead to see which place you would visit set that as your return flight ....Thank me later
I fly back and forth every 3 weeks. I have it figured out were I alternate airlines to and from. Allowing me to fly "round trips" I fly airline A to Europe. 3 days later airline B home. 14 days go by airline B to Europe (round trip pricing) and than airline A home (21 day stay and round trip pricing)

Make a video of how to find the cheapest ticket possible
Just use Google Flights. I don't wanna sound like a shrill, but that site makes it stupidly easy to find the cheapest day and airline to fly on.
Look for smaller, low-cost airports nearby.
+MrPaukann Actually that's bad advice; smaller airports actually cost more to fly to because of less competition for routes.
Troodon, no. Look at BCN vs Barcelona Girona, London Heathrow vs London Luton, Frankfurt vs Frankfurt Hahn, Sheremetevo vs Vnukovo.
Holy crap you're right
"People spend there whole lives figuring out what to charge you to fly." Feels a bit personal, really.
*Their*
So just buy a round trip ticket to London, stay as long as you want, then buy another round trip ticket to go home. Still cheaper.
And then get stranded in London as the airline refuses to honor your fare code because you haven't proven that you meet the minimum-stay requirement. Since you didn't show up to board the first leg of the flight, you haven't met the requirements of the fare code, since they have no proof that you stayed a Sunday. Buying and flying that round-trip ticket is their proof that you are a tourist and not a businessperson.
I suppose you could get around this by buying the opposite city pair in the middle of your trip. That is, buy JFK-LHR roundtrip for Monday and next next Friday; then LHR-JFK roundtrip for Friday and next next Monday. I don't know if this is possible or even legal; at the very least customs might harass you for trying to enter the country without a return flight or a long-term stay visa. I haven't flown commercially so I don't know if customs talks to airlines' booking departments or not. If they did, then this plan wouldn't work.
Furthermore, the ticket restriction is on minimum stay - you don't need to link two round-trip fares to get a longer stay, they'll honor the cheaper fair code for a long stay. Maximum stay requirements do exist, but they're usually for absurdly long periods of time where you'd need a long-term stay visa anyway.
Are there legal requirements that you MUST take the flight you paid for? I'm pretty sure you can't be arrested for not getting on an airplane (unless for other reasons like Visa expiration, etc).
Ben Marvin AHHHHHHHH
People actually do this. Like you'll find articles and videos with extremely click baity titles that "expose this secret".
You can't get arrested for not taking the first leg, but if you pause the video at 8:43, you'll see this fun little sentence: "THE TICKET IS INVALID IF FLIGHT COUPONS ARE NOT USED IN SEQUENCE". That means if you aren't physically present at the airport and board the first leg of your flight, then you lose the second leg of your flight. You won't be arrested for missing that first flight (unless doing so would cause you to overstay a visa) but they won't let you board the second.
A great year to start the new year - another plane/airline related video; thanks!
It also depends on where you buy your ticket at. on Norwegian they have three options for English: American English, British English, and all other English. You can save up to $40 to $50 a ticket if you go to other English, but you're still buying from the same airport to the same airport.
I happen to work for a major Airline and this is absolutely accurate. British Airways is notorious for adding fuel surcharges of on average $200 each way and Delta doesnt play nice with others. For my free flights i get by working for an airline it only really costs the airline around $3 for me to fill the seat including drinks and all that extra stuff so think about that. Next maybe do a video to see the average cost to an airline per seat/person
-Wendover- Airplane Productions
And this is why you buy tickets a month in advance, sell the tickets to pay rent, and then change you phone background to a picture of the Bahamas
my opinions are facts except you can’t sell a plane ticket to another person. It has your name on it.
mattpytlak white out
my opinions are facts i work for an Airline and if you try to change the name on the ticket it will reprice the ticket at the current price and you wont make any profit
gamer larry They also charge you a cancellation fee ($150 for AA) unless you have a Y class ticket (which no one has unless they're an idiot or are buying the ticket right before boarding which means they probably aren't going to try and return it). I got screamed at and called names because of this more times than I can count. Glad I don't work for an airline anymore.
Why does everybody here have good puns?
7:25 I love how the price changed from $2,772 to $2,272, just to show that prices do drop in real time as we speak :P
VidBin .....always check prices.....I found a r/t DTW/LAX...only $59.00...booked that ...for that price all good...a day later it was back to regular $600.00 fare range....so you since humans are using their computers to enter a price...there will be mistakes made....just sayin....

If you only need a one way ticket to London, then just buy a return ticket, but don`t attend the plane on the way back ;)
true
But I don't think you can check a bag
de de de deported
That's exactly what my family and I did when we moved from London to the US. It was $thousands less to buy a bunch of return flights and not show up for the trip back. I'm guessing this happens all the time and contributes to the airlines "having to overbook" flights. Absolutely idiotic really.
Calvin's World News It's not idiotic if it makes profit
You forgot to mention, the tracking cookies that we must accept. They track us and if we search a certain route multiple times the price will not decrease but the opposite.
Do not track. Block cookies.
lot of sites wont let you use their service if you block cookies - but - if you use chrome, their is a neat little extension that lets you view, edit or delete a specific website's cookies - i used this a lot when trying over a few month span to book tickets to manila, malaysia and taiwan - also found that not only the day of the week your willing to fly, but also the day of the week you search prices makes a difference - even hour of the day (sunday morning was best time to search back then, until some newspaper like NYT had to write an article to that effect, then everyone was trying to do the same)
that's why i use tor to search for some flights, however, some websites like expedia are blocked on tor for that exact reason
Search in incognito
Their algorithms are more complex than that these days. Besides, their webservers can see what IP's are looking at what and when. It already knows what your IP looked at.... The servers remember the mere fact that someone, anybody, looked at a given flight or route. If there are tons of requests for a price on a given route, they remember that and prices are adjusted accordingly. Amazon's algorithms include similar methods. If 20000 people suddenly look at a given item in a short time, it raises the price. If you go back to look a month or two later, the price will be back down. Sometimes you can get the price down by connecting in from a different computer or location, but ther'es no guarantee.
Well this video was actually reallyyy helpful

I've never not enjoyed watching these videos. The animation is spot on and the narration is easy to understand. WP and HAI are high quality educational channels, nice work.
I love your videos! Especially when they're somehow connected to flying. Keep up the work Wendover!
These videos are so well produced. You do such a great job on your research too. Every detail is looked into and analyzed. On top of that you do a great job relaying the information to the audience. Really enjoy your videos. Thanks!
I never thought it would be so interesting to know about the flight industry, but I'm starting to love all your videos, especially the ones when you talk about planes and this industry in general.
Air Canada last year was insane, at least on my country. I had a Santiago de Chile-Tokyo ticket at only usd$730... For a total of 23 hours flying! I'm sure that a cheap trip just to North America costs the same. And they also had cheaper prices to go to Europe compared with other carriers, even when it was far more hours flying (because of stopover in Toronto)
Hey Wendover, can you please make a video on why African flights are so expensive even though the aircraft are worse?
From US to Africa? I’d assume lack of competition and quantity of flyers. Domestic African flights? My guess would be lack of regulation and lack of competition leading to high pricing aimed towards tourists who have few choices if they’re interested in visitinf
Which Aircrafts are u talkin about? If u fly with Emirates, British Airways, Brussels Airways, KLM and many others then u good.. if u fly with Local african aircrafts then idk.. i had the worst flying experiences with Ethopian Airways and Egyptair.. so i guess its all about the company you fly with and if you book earlier you will find some cheap ones!!
David Zhou What you said about US to Africa and vise versa is most likely true, but when it comes to flights around Africa, I don't think that's the case. There are many airlines, both regular and budget that operate flights, so there is competition.
mizzy mauri I think Ethiopian is one of the best in Africa, maybe you had a one-off bad experience. Their service is decent and their aircraft is new (they have an Airbus A350 but I don't think it flies in and around Africa). Other companies have aircraft that are at least 10 to 15 years old and simple things like seat recline and headphone jacks don't work. Not to forget the bad in-flight entertainment while still being around $1000 for a flight from Dakar to Accra (not even direct).
But there often isn't non-flight competition, ie the roads and rail are bad enough to put people off using them, or the distances are too long. Then you get into price-matching as mentioned in the video.
Thank you for this. I love how you break down the information so easily!
Y’all about to hit 1 mil 😭 this is my favorite educational channel. I’m happy for y’all 🤓
When I took business trips I loved that I could stay a weekend either before or after I had to be there and get a cheaper flight. I used the extra time to sightsee. Usually the airline discount was cheap enough it even paid for the extra days in the hotel so my company loved it too.
But with united airlines you pay with your life

"This way, travelers make their decision based on the reputation of the airline, rather than the price"
Well, we all know United Airlines isn't gonna be everyones first pick...
Best comment ever in this comment section
yeah...no. Many of us go out of our way to fly United because we're treated well. I personally have Gold status with them, and am willing to pay more to fly with United vs other us airlines. For that I get upgrades, lounge access, Economy Plus seating, and free baggage allowance. People who actually travel often know the dragging off story is a one time thing. Every airline gets people who say "they would rather fly with anyone but them". That is until that airline has the cheapest price again...
@@drunkrussianisgood I had friends who flown united and they always say its not great. Their service sucks, and overall the reputation for the airline is still bad ever since they dragged a passenger off a flight. Even my dad who flown united couple times and is a business traveler can agree that united is bad. I've heard good things about Delta and that too their service as well as their reputation as a whole is better than United. Comparing United's lounges and upgrades, in terms of US based carriers Delta is better, but Asian and some European carriers are far better.
@@legalizebuckets594 oh I agree that they're inferior to Asian/European airlines in most ways. But when comparing to US airlines, I don't find United much better or worse than the others for the average traveller, and they get shit on unnecessarily by people who don't really know much about air travel.
It's also funny because most people in reality choose on price alone, and will literally fly anyone to save a dollar. So it's all talk and no action anyways.
I would choose Delta or JetBlue, best legacy airline and best budget airline in the US in my opinion.

"Travellers to Dublin only have one choice" that's wrong, they also have a choice of getting on a ship.
All cruises across the Atlantic go to England without stopping in Ireland, so you would still have to fly from there to get to your final destination.
CodyORB ferry to England from Ireland
Dublin can go to London and then over to NY or chicago or atlanta or philadelphia.
Shannon has direct routes to US.
Cork can also go to London and on.
Cork can also now go to Iceland and on to US.

Average Joesson, Quite often actually. I'm going from Amsterdam to London in a few months, and even though it's only 360 km (220 miles), airplane is by far the quickest and cheapest.

Just what I needed! Thanks.
Finally some planes
Somehow it’s cheaper for someone to purchase a return ticket from Sydney to London (16,990km / 10,560mi) (around US$1,082) than it is for someone to purchase a return ticket from New York to London (5,567km / 3,459mi) (around US$1,492) *Explain that*
surfie007 it’s also cheaper to fly from Madrid, Spain to Tokyo through London (550€ return) than to fly London to Tokyo only (850€) on the same airline/flight
When I lived in Tokyo, it was $500 to fly to Paris. At the time flying NY to Paris was over twice that.
My guess is it's simple supply and demand
Airports are fixed in their size; they have an inelastic supply. They can grow over time but usually much slower than demand. As a result, airports can charge higher and higher fees and still have demand equal to their supply. This is much like concerts or sporting events or amusement parks; these places are only so big and expanding them requires more land.
If you have 1,000 seats to fill and 10,000 people are willing to pay $50 for those seats, it is in your best interest to raise prices until the amount of people willing to pay that price equals the amount of seats you have.
Story of George Flights from UK airports excluding Northern Ireland are subject to the Air Passenger Duty (APD) tax. The UK’s APD is much higher than the equivalent taxes in any other country. But it’s only charged on flights originating in the UK, not connecting through the UK. This is why you’ll see flights connecting through London for cheaper. Of course long haul direct flights also come at a premium.
Dude, that actually makes so much sense. THANKS!!!
Love all your vids. Well done 👍🏼
