There was rumblings of discontent about the subject matter when the programme was first shown. Luckily for us the BBC ignored it and it went on to become one of its most popular exports especially in France and Germany!
@@fus149hammer4 Was it ever shown in Germany ? I thought it wasn't - not because (ironically) they found it unfunny or offensive - quite the reverse - but because nearly every episode contained a nazi salute and it was against the law to broadcast any material that contained it except for news or historical reasons.
Well, a "woker" would look at it and say this single scene is harmful to LGBT++%$#% as it ridicules our gay brethren, shows offensive fascist symbols, portrays women as oppressed sex symbols, spreads offensive stereotypes of Germans, and would go on cancelling the whole show. Maybe UA-cam will kick it off the web some day. I hope people wake up and cancel the "cancel culture" now screwing up our lives as we speak. This madness is serious but cannot go on for much longer.
Ok so I’m 20, I’m a socialist, support BLM and I’m probs what people would consider woke and I have just one point to make. What on earth are people on about? This isn’t offensive, and if it is that’s kinda the point. Comedy isn’t supposed to be nice to everyone, from the ancient days of Aristophanic comedy where people were called out for being corrupt and impotent to the humour now of making jokes about covid, because if we don’t laugh we’d most likely cry. Anyway I don’t find this offensive in the slightest, and more Allo Allo content would be appreciated.
My dad, who lived through WW2 in Holland and Germany, and I loved this show ever since it aired around 1980. My German friends however were outraged by scenes like this one, confirming the stereotype of Germans having no real sense of humor and being, to this day, unable to laugh at themselves. I got more and more the impression, as the eighties turned into the nineties, that Germans were sick and tired of being lampooned and ridiculed in every single WW2 series and movie that appeared over all those years. You will never see "Allo Allo" being shown on mainstream German TV. Nowadays I start thinking that all this woke nonsense and the Critical Race Theory, which originated at German universities by the way, we are now suffering under, came out from this rage the Germans have felt for over 70 years for having their history of 100 years of "inglorious basterds failure" rubbed under their noses in such a delicious, humorous way as it is seen here. Who ever heard the German national anthem being played in 3/4 Tyrolean waltz rhythm? I cannot get it out of my head now!
@Tim Tom Well, the issue is really a lot more complicated. Consider first the fact that I was born in 1963, or 20 years after the Battle of Kursk. My whole youth was spent in a kind of post-WW2 haze. I followed German school from kindergarten to final exams. Over half of my teachers actually HAD fought in WW2, in the Wehrmacht, Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine, you name it, or they were Hitlerjugend lads drawn into the aerial defense (Luftwaffenhelfer), loading the mighty Flak 88's and shooting down allied bombers at night. My music teacher fought in Stalingrad and was flown out with a frozen right hand in one of the last airlifts out of the battle. My own dad was stuck in Duisburg during Operation Hurricane in 1944, when everything around him was bombed flat during three days of continuous allied bombing. So imagine the tons of stories I heard all around me, stuff you don't even read in books. All my German schoolfriends had family members - dads, uncles - who fought and died in WW2. I also had the "historical privilege" to get to know actual ex-members of the Waffen-SS. A privilege because it's so different to READ about it, and then HEAR it first-hand. It was fascinating to converse with them. They all agreed in endorsing the Nazi's social programs - popular equality or "Volksgeist" but living well, not in misery as under Communism - and most of them also said that the Holocaust was a "lamentable hick-up" that should never have happened in the first place - unquote. They weren't sorry, they didn't repent of their choice in joining the Waffen-SS, and some of them would have done it all over again if they could. The problem with the post-war German generation, that of my school buddies, was not the war itself, but a self-guilt imposed by school education, media and so on, on them. Germany chose Hitler, Hitler destroyed Europe and killed the Jews, Germany lost the war and was split in two. This "mantra" rooted itself in the German unconscious and became the feeding ground for extremist movements of the left (RAF, Baader-Meinhof), ecologist movements (Die Gruenen) with an extremist character, pacifist movements with also a violent touch, you name it. And all extreme LEFT. My generation was taught to blame their parents and grandparents for everything that happened, become the one that purges itself out completely of the spectres of Nazism and nationalism, changes the nature of the German people, and in this light one has to see Angela Merkel's drive (my generation) to change Germany's demographics by letting in 100's of 1000's of refugees from all over the world. Embracing gender theory, critical race theory, nothing is too crazy anymore, as long as it erases any trace or memory of the past. Now, does anyone really believe it? As history goes, it never forms a nation. It's the other way around. Germans shaped their own history and their own destiny. How much they try, each time they look into the mirror, they will still see the same overconfident, smug, supremacist, perfectionist German who triggered WW1, WW2, and is now running the European Union. It embarrasses them. And when you joke around them, start goose-stepping in front of them or even mimic them in cod German (Zis is not vat I vant!), they get very angry. Because they KNOW that deep down, they haven't changed at all. The German of 2021 is the same one of 1921 and 1941. And I hope they one day will realize this. They are, what they are.
@Tim Tom And rightly so, if you permit me saying. Funnily, none of my German contacts understand the UK's reasons for doing so. They are not even aware of the mess the EU has created in its members' states. One has only to look how the EU, under leadership of the German finance minister Schaeuble, squashed poor Greece into oblivion in 2011. That year, when I heard first-hand accounts of of what was happening in Greece and saw how the Euro media didn't care a bit about the misery caused in that country, I saw the truth. I am Dutch and a full euro-sceptic, and I applaud Brexit. Better 10 years of economic hardship than a life-time of viewing one's country and identity erased into a grey formless ball tossed around by a bunch of self-elected despots.
@@avginkel "And I hope they one day will realize this. They are, what they are." - Well said, Adriaan. I hope they do. Now, to get something out of the way, my family fought on the opposite side, many died, some went through concentration camps. I am of Polish extraction. However, with Germany as weak as it is now, European civilizaton will not survive. Germany used to be the foundation of what we see now as the Western Civilization. After Greeks and Romans Germany (Holy Roman Empire) took the civilizational lead. It was in that role, reaching its peak under Otto von Bismarck, until the ill advised rethoric of the late '30s. Keep in mind many countries in Europe expected Poland to join the Axis, but once the anti-Polish rethoric started, Great Britain had a much easier time to convince Poland to join their side. I hope such mistakes and a mutual slaughter of culturally related nations do not repeat in the future. Germany has a historic mission in Europe, and it is the only country with the potential to fulfill it, but it has to wake up.
Take French post modernisim, mix with the marxist from the Frankfurt school (german) add a dash of radical feminism (virtually simultaneous in the anglosphere) and bake in American universities for 50 years, there you have critical theory. What happened in Germany can happen anywhere, it's not that different from what's happening in China right now. And the USA could easily go down a barbarous path. And as adriaan said above Germany is important to Europe. The original plan for Germany post ww2 was to de industrialise it completely, before the Americans realised Europe could not recover without Germany recovering.
Girls were not in the Hitler Youth. They had their own organization called Bund Deutscher Mädel (BDM). Also, the uniforms shown here are similar to the (male) Hitler Youth uniforms, but not at all similar to BDM ones.

Sam Kelly could not condone saying "Heil Hitler!" If you listen carefully, he actually says "'Tler!"; the last syllable of Heil Hitler! It does indeed sound like Kloop, and for years everyone believed that was what Sam was saying, but in an interview years later he actually said, no it's Tler, he didn't want to spoil the play, so deliberately came in late but only saying the last syllable.
