Luffy may be dumb, but he did not pick his comrades on a whim. Like in here with Zoro, after seeing him eat the food, he realized he would be a great comrade. Same with Sanji when he gave food to a person that was starving.
He's the polar opposite of Black Beard who pick his comrades based on how strong they are. Luffy cares mostly about how endearing you are. Your abilities come later

Did anyone here know that Chirstopher Sabat and his wife filed for divorce a few years ago? The case was dismissed, but that does not erase the fact that Sabat and his wife were trying to separate. I wonder why? Could it be that there actually is some truth to the accusations against Sabat by several women claiming that he tried to coerce them into performing illicit acts on him in exchange for a voice-over role? And when they told him "no," he tried to destroy their careers? It certainly doesn't help that the first voice actor for DBZ's Android 18, "Meredith McCoy", is one of those accusers. There is even testimony from voice actor Chuck Huber himself that says that Sabat has a "casting couch" in his office, and Huber has gone on record saying that Sabat is casually homophobic in the workplace and casually bullies anyone he doesn't like. Huber even admitted that he and his wife were scared of speaking out against Sabat due to potential retaliation. So we at the very least know that Sabat is an abusive co-worker/superior. And that Crunchyroll adamantly refuses to investigate these claims. So, if Sabat doesn't think that there is anything wrong with at the very least, verbally abusing a co-worker; why would he think that there was anything wrong with, at the very least; verbally abusing his wife? The fact that Tabitha Sabat never said anything about the allegations made against her husband being "lies and slander" only makes the situation more eyebrow raising. I have to wonder, is everything okay behind the closed doors of the Sabat household? Please keep in mind that this is all just speculation on my part.
