i was a freshman year fashion design student in ‘87 with only karl lagerfeld, patrick kelly, donna karan and the like as my influences & references… until i met my “fairy godmother” and best friend to this day who introduced me to yohji, rei, kenzo, issey and the mind blowing innovation and genius of japanese design(ers). changed my life as well as my views of fashion. what once only made me feel, then also made me think. sadly, many of the young, new talents want to be big stars more than they want to be influential designers (and corporate overlords don’t provide the encouragement to do so). therefore, we get trends instead of innovation that can move fashion forward. but i’m an old queen with little patience for those who don’t have reverence for the o.g. masters! 😆 btw, if you’ve not seen it, for transformative fashion, check out yohji’s spring ‘99 women’s collection… one of his best collections (for either gender) ever.
I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts here. I wish more people experienced this about fashion, and design at large: "What once made me feel, then also made me think." ❤... Now I'm off to explore Yohji women's S99! 🙏🙏🙏
absolutely loved this video essay. sacai is one of my favorites brands ever! first piece i’ve ever gotten was the nike x sacai blazers, still impressed by them and will always be infatuated by their design language.
Tried to be a Sacai person for a hot minute, but that failed. Once you start getting into Rei/Margiela territory that's too ADVANCED FASHION for me, but I certainly appreciate it and whenever I get an opportunity to see and touch these clothes in person I'm always amazed by the fabric choices and construction!
In today’s world, it’s a hard ask to buy specific used clothing that only applies to a single context. I’ve hiked and have gone to the gym is rick Owens pieces.
One of my favourite deconstructionists that is (in my mind) on the same level as the greats but sneaks under the radar at times is Takahiro Miyashita. That aw19 collection was something else, and I'm always impressed by wide array of emotion he's able to convey through his pieces.
Peter, just saw your UA-cam channel for the first time.
Just going to say this, keep up the good work. Thank you!

Thanks so much for watching! I know the blazer you’re talking about. LOVE!!!
Love that you brought up final home, the purpose of those garments and meaning of the brand still resonates with me to this day
Any chance you have the Final Home jacket I talk about in the vid??

Love that you tried. That's how style evolves, IMO!
Another great thought-provoking video!
Thank you kindly!
Love your videos

I have the greatest respect for Rick Owens. For the right customer (and it sounds like you are that person) those clothes work very very hard.

So much amazing design coming from Japan 🇯🇵❤️
Your Eames storage unit in the background frequently distracts me. Very stylish.
I showed your video to a friend and she had a dream about you and she hasn’t shut up about your video
That is … bizarre. I hope she liked the video? 🤞
