- As a New York City firefighter, Jeff Cool responded to both the 1993 bombing of The World Trade Center and the 9/11 attacks. He also survived Black Sunday, the second deadliest day for the FDNY in 2005, when 2 fires on the same day ultimately killed 4 NYC firefighters. Cool and his crew were trapped on the 5th floor of a burning tenement, jumping to escape the flames at their backs.
Because he was there in the 1993 World Trade Center attack, this Air Force vet KNEW even before the second tower was hit, that it was another terror attack.
Off duty and at home in Rockland County with his wife and two young sons, Jeff was quickly on his way to his firehouse in the South Bronx, before all off-duty firefighters and NYPD’ers were called to duty, From the Tappan Zee Bridge 35 miles away, he watched the two towers in flames.
Jeff Cool lost 33 firefighter friends on 9/11. One of them was 32 year old FDNY’er Tommy Foley, one of 8 from the elite Special Operations Command at Rescue 3 to die that day. The Foley’s, of Rockland County, have lost 3 immediate family member because of 9/11. Their dad, who spent days searching for Tommy at ground zero, died of a 9/11 cancer, as did Tommy’s brother, FDNY’er Danny, 42 year old father of five, and the youngest ever to join the Special Ops Command, in 2020.

There’s something very special about being a “New York, New York” Newyorker. It’s a connection, and when you add the brother/sisterhood of the first responders in that city, it elevates that bond. I’m watching these videos long after their initial posting, because I want to know the stories of the people we lost on September 11th, so I can share them, too. I will never, ever forget the people we lost that day.

A story I have to tell about the NYFD: in 2009 we were visiting the firehouse that was closest to the World Trade Centers. A fire engine was in the street signaling its need to turn into the firehouse. A scene from 9/11 just washed over the firehouse scene I was watching. I just couldn’t move. My inner pictures terrorized me.Those firefighters had every right to yell at the crazy lady. They must have realized . . . And one firefighter just gently said, “Move to the side, Ma’am” I finally did, but those firefighters were just very, very kind. I would say that kindness is very representative of the FDNY.
Heart felt and well-spoken words that penetrate to the soul. Bless this man and all who need healing, physically, emotionally and mentally.
It takes a lot of courage to come and tell these stories. I listen to these stories because they have helped me feel I can deal with my own PTSD (not 9/11 related). I have known a lot of loss and talking about it helps. It moved me so much to see Mr. Cool tell the story of those he lost and saying their names. It's important. They say a person dies twice. The first time when they leave this world and the second when their name is spoken for the last time. Their names will live in the hearts of those that loved them, those they helped, and all those who hear their stories.

His story made me cry. What a strong resilient man. Been through so much, and still going strong-saying all his brothers names doing this for his brothers. I pray for the victims everyday of 9/11 - civilians, ppl just trying to go to work that day, all the first responders the police, the firemen legitimately do their job going there not realizing how bad it was and even when they did they were professional did what they had too and were real heros that day. None of these angels are ever forgotten 🙏 I enjoy all of these ( I cry at most lol) but I enjoy hearing stories about these people- someone like Jeff made them feel like they were here with us again like he was talking to them not about them. FDNY was always, still is, and always will be the best of the best. Greetings from the San Francisco Bay Area. The country is in awe of you guys. We will never forget what happened to your brothers, and will never stop avenging and getting justice for what those evil bastards did that day. And hats off and big salute and gratitude to the Foley family.

I dreaded the museum being opened. My sister and I were visiting and she had gotten tickets. I'd been to Ground Zero often during the years after 9/11. The first time I saw the finished pools my heart broke again. It took me some time walking down the stairs into the museum. Now, I feel the museum heals our hearts a bit in its powerful and loving presentation of horrible 9/11. My son was to have been in the Towers that day. The spring of 2002 he and his wife travelled into The City for the first time since 9/11. They arrived at Ground Zero to see pictures of the people jumping being sold. They left and went home. His career eventually brought them back to live in The City. All the years we visited to see the changes at Ground Zero he never went with us. The spring of 2017, he met me at Trinity Church. I was then walking to Ground Zero and asked him to come with me. He hesitated then said he'd come. I gave him a tour ending and we ended up at the Irish Famine Memorial on the West Bank. He never said a word all that time. The few things he's shared since then have all been about people he's known who worked "The Pile" and how sick they are and how our Congress abandoned them. p.s. My husband's Great Grandmother's family name in Galway, Ireland was Foley. People of spirit, enjoyment of others, thoroughly dependable lovers of freedom.
Wow. Were they really selling pictures of the jumpers? That's horrific. Why would they do such a thing?

Jeff is a true warrior. An American soldier, FDNY elite firefighter, a great father, husband, & friend to so many. I know your hurting brother & I wish I could take some of that from you. One fine day you will be with Joey, Tommy, Danny & everyone you lost. Hang in there brother & enjoy watching Jr. become more like his old man everyday on the job down there.

I'm British so I don't think I've heard of the "Black Sunday" event. I looked it up. I'm sorry. It seems like it was a terrible situation to be in but I'm glad you survived.
I remember hearing about Thomas Foley and particularly remember his poor father. I'm sorry to learn about all that happened to his family. I don't know if it's wrong but I try not to be too curious about people impacted by 9/11 because I don't want to be invasive or ghoulish, but I never forget about it.

Heroes. Don't forget the heroes of the people inside wtc. These people helped each other, before the 🚒🔥 firemen and police came along. At and above impact zone. People jumped, do they jump or stay on the burning floors waiting for the fire / police people to come. Did they know the buildings would come down? Or that stairs were shut off? Yet we hear police department saying the Jumpers........
