I fished from the bank until I retired and got a boat a few years ago. Sometimes, trailering the boat to a local lake is cumbersome. I still enjoy bank fishing, especially if conditions are cold and/or windy. Fishing small streams that are not accessible by boat is great fun. Your topics and presentation are much appreciated. Keep up the good work.
Matt: So-refreshing to hear a Dad allowing his sons to be “boys being boys”. You are allowing them to explore, problem solve, learn, share memories as brothers, etc. All of these things will help them as they become men. Thank you! God Bless.
I am a 74 yr old bank fisherman, fishing for bass twice a week at a local park lake, here in central calif. I cannot get around easily and need to sit periodically, so I typically camp out in one area on the shore and wait for the bass to come to me. I've only been fishing for bass for the past 3.5 yrs. It was refreshing to hear you suggest that style, as most everyone else states that you have to find the fish vs having them find me. It often takes several hours, but usually one or more will show up eventually. I got my 7.89 PB last July, during a heat wave. I appreciate your videos.
For years growing up I was so tired of being limited to a certain area. I bought a float tube and a pair of kick fins and went fishing wherever I wanted to go and caught a lot of bass. Did a lot of flipping in pads and brush. As long as the water isn't too cold I loved it.
I was thinking the other day you needed to film a walleye trip behind a dam this spring. I haven’t done that since my time at Point. This video brought up some good memories. Thank you.
Thanks for doing a bank fishing video. I have been with your channel a long time and really enjoy it. However, it would be good and appreciated to throw on a bank fishing one from time to time and in more detail.
I fish from the bank, some spots are covering water with a swim jig. Others are sit n wait target areas. The winter is actually my favorite time of year because I can actually fish the sit n wait spots. Once warm weather hits, I drop to a 6’10” MH/ModF rod and I’m hiking into areas because the sit n wait spots are packed. There’ll be spots that really is a 1 person spot, but there’ll be 5 people shoulder to shoulder fishing the spot. …. I agree about catching what you can catch. Nothing beats a crappie rod or a M spinning rod. Last year I caught snakehead, pickerel, blue gill, crappie, giant shad, catfish. Usually when you find them they’re in groups, which can lead to 10-15 fish on back to back casts.
Hey matt, As a person on the west coast who bank fishes a lot I really appreciate this topic. While this is some really good information in here but left out a couple of things. Mainly the need to keep your gear light. Even if your hunkered down and bait fishing, your comfortable carrying weight matters while bank fishing and can easily determine whether you can take advantage of fish activity. Another personal tip of mine is to follow the local content creators and use their videos as a fishing reports for the area. I can’t tell you how useful it is to see how someone with more experience tackles one of the areas I fish. Anyways hope this helps
Great info. I snagged alot less with free-rig then any other tech, def would recommend. I love walking stretches of the rivers during fall, all the leavs , debre och high and low water level and you can find the back waters so much more easy and makeing readign the waterflow alot more simple and even see structure or signs of them during low water. Then you fish the spots when spring comes if you don't like to get too cold. :)
Thank you Matt!!! I fish mostly neighborhood ponds close to home due to my fishing time is limited, stopping for an hour after work or maybe I have a couple of hours on the weekend. I have found the more finesse that I fish at these locations, that do get a lot of pressure, the more successful I am. It seems that most of the guys I come across while fishing at these ponds are always throwing the latest and greatest power fishing lures and for the most part I don't see them catching too much. I just keep it slow and finesse, weightless stick baits, flukes, Ned rigs and my new favorite way to fish some of these soft plastic baits is on the Core Tackle Hover Rig. When these guys see me catching fish and they aren't getting any bites they always ask me, "what are you throwing?" When the fish are active and chasing I will throw a paddle tail swim bait or a spinner bait to cover more water but for the most part, finesse is best for me as a bank angler. I also always bring an ultralight set-up so if the bass aren't biting I won't hesitate to go after some slab panfish.
No joke, I’m 41 and started fishing last year and rollerblading down a bike path is exactly how I started! Caught my first bass on a Texas rigged curly tail while in rollerblades! Don’t feel bad dude! My kids thought I was cool so that must count for something haha
Great subject, I would recommend for the person walking the bank like you said slow down I throw a weightless 5" senko with a 3/0 hook of your choice just make sure it's sticky sharp and pay attention to the weed edges and if you can see a sharp drop of fish that edge but don't take your eyes of that line many times they will take it on the way down and just sit there, hope this helps someone 👍
Matt, thanks for this topic, because you know, I fish a lake in Austria, which is difficult to fish, because it is very deep and very clear and the good spots are high pressured... the things you mentioned are so true... but when you catch (a) fish on this lake , one can not be happier !!!
During summer break from school my friends and I used to go to our community lake almost everyday, it was some of my better memories growing up, thanks for this video
Recently, I skunked several times from the bank using finesse jerk baits, shad raps, DT crankbaits, dropshot, etc. I just discovered that I simply did not present the right lure at the right time. It's interesting that sometimes you think that there are no fish to be caught, but it's really not the case.
I have done both. I prefer bank fishing however. My best experiences are fishing while going hiking. I tend to cover a lot of territory when I go fishing. I do not mind scrambling over boulders and diving through brush to catch fish. I have been doing this all my life. I am 67 years old now. I plan on doing lots more fishing. I tend to go out on a boat when I go ocean fishing.
Thank you for making this video Matt! I've been begging for this. Lol. I do a pretty good job of catching fish from the bank but I'm always looking for tips! I think this is a video not many guys make so hopefully it will pick you up some new subscribers!! As always I enjoyed the video! Tell your boys they have fans as well! I love watching you guys fish the Wednesday nighters! Have a great day sir!
Honestly carp fishing with light tackle from shore is so fun and challenging too. If you did bank fishing tip shows once in a while I'll bet they'd do well.
Grew up a shore fisherman. My pop was a trout guy, fished rivers& lakes; grew up along the ct. river, just a five minute bike ride to the closest spots& could fish up& down it for hours. Access is the biggest thing with bank fishing for sure. I reccomend walking a bit farther than the crowd. Hit spots a bit more grown in, less used. Find less pressured areas on pressured shore lakes& river spots when possible.
Matt, Great video. When fishing from the bank I like to use: Jika Rig, neko rig, drop shot, cheap spinnerbaits & T-rig. The lakes & ponds I fish have lots of snags. The 1/8oz jika rig with a Missile Bait Baby D-bomb or D-bomb will catch a lot of bass (even in cold water). I just drag it on bottom. NE KS, NW MO area
I went past some brackish marshes near the Chesapeake Bay today and they were frozen. What a weird sight. I wish we had more places we could fish around Hampton and Newport News in VA. In VA Beach you can fish on the beach 24/7. Here the beach closes and you can't just fish anywhere. We have a few parks and piers but not enough. It's definitely not like Florida, where I grew up fishin on the beaches and under bridges and on seawalls. So I have my kayak. My Core Tackle stuff should be here tomorrow. I have a new 7'6" rod and new reel, ready for spring.
great video. I would add, don't be afraid to ask for permission from private land owners to access the water. just be polite and respectful of their property.
Great video, I would also suggest streamlining your tackle by finding plastics you can use for multiple tactics. I’m sure the rest of you are like me and see a new type and just can’t seem to pass it by and by the end of the season your carrying way too much stuff
I live. So. Mpls. Right there Ford Dam. Pool 2. Mississippi River. A lot of the spots only too fish them is from shore. Learn too identify productive spots. How too fish them Learn Iff there’s fish there or not. On year and conditions. Weather sun. All that. Easy for me just to throw a bike on the bike rack Goid hiking boots. 10-15 minutes I’m there. Caught fish walleye up to near 10 Lbs. Just go. Learn techniques. Learn a ton. And it’s cheap. Fishings good there.
What do you do with all them plastic baits hanging in the background? Do they get too old? Do you give them away? I’m not looking for any gifts at all, I buy my own, but if they are just gonna get thrown away at some point, maybe some kids could use them??
I hate boat fishing like hell. Did it several times and hated it. I like shore fishing bc it's work. I hate kayak fishing even more. That's how real men do it. They think I want a boat. I think they're mistaken. It's silly. Yes, the inaccessibility is the bad thing. Knowing how to fish helps. When I fish, I don't feel good if I don't come home sore and burnt completely. I can't speak for other men. I think it's an honor to fish with me too.
@@kenneth9874 BC no one else knows how to fish and they're not fit. They're almost always fat. They need electronics to help them move around. And they do jig fishing. If they fail at jigs or too many fish spit the jigs, they turn to dropshotting. Why don't you prove me wrong? Some have boats that leak oil into the lake and the boat keeps choking. If I was them, I'd use livebaits only. You can have my kayak, just pay shipping and handling. Lol. To be frank, they don't know what a Woodream is or an Angelo y Company Hobo is. When lakes sand or hard enough bottom. I get in the water. Wade through. Cover water. Iff it’s hot. Cool you off.
Love doing that
Pond tips please. Especially for bass and especially from bank... but from a small boat/kayak/canoe also helpful.
I’ll try to cover those in a future video

Send me some of that plastic you got behind you

It takes a real man to admit using “fruit boots”.
haha they are needed when the water is 45 degrees
