I just want people to enjoy the GR Corolla because it's a great car. Stop reading into the false narratives and misinformation. Just bringing up the topic when it's not true does nothing but add to the confusion.
THANK YOU! That line about "putting things into perspective" is what is missing and common sense. As the saying goes... "vocal minority", the small subset of people with clutch issues are doing exactly what you said, abusing the car and then jumping online and screaming from the rooftops anywhere someone will listen. The fires without much definitive information from owners, turned into the car being some national risk. That Toyota should warranty a car, they investigated and deemed to not be something from the way the car was built. The amount of cars sold, to the percentage of of damaged cars, as you said its insignificant. Also, for us who drive our cars a lot, take road trips, have modified them,we are saying the same thing, for what this car was designed to do, within those parameters its amazing. I appreciate another owner putting proper sense to the matters.
Thanks, it's always nice to see others with common sense! I just felt like I had to finally say something as I was sick and tired of people blowing things out of proportion with little to no information.
Jim - I feel like the frustration is not with the cars having any significant mechanical issues, but how Toyota is handling the warranty claims on the few that do. I know a handful of people with clutch issues in the 23s before the superseded part number came out, and it was pulling teeth to get them to honor it on a less than a year old car. Most of these are autocrossers who are doing aggressive launches, but *every* other new car doing the same thing do not have those issues. I myself have smelt the clutch a handful of times, and I am just waiting for the day when I will need to replace it myself. 7k on the car, 1 year in, and already budgeting for a clutch and a weekend to swap it when, not if, it happens. I feel for the consumers without a garage and the mechanical knowledge who will be stuck with a $5k clutch job out of pocket on their new car. Not ideal PR for Toyota, and the fire issues are just exponentially worse. I am not going to freak out and sell it tomorrow because of either issues, but I drank the kool-aid hard last year and the wife got a 2024 Rav4 Hybrid at the same time as I got the GRC. Regrets? Not yet, but Toyota is supposed to have the best reliability and warranties out there, and I'm not seeing it now that I'm here. It's expected that all new platform cars are going to have a handful of small issues, but that's what *warranties* are for.. not *insurance*. Key difference. Overall I love the car and hope to show up to one of the Vancouver Sunday events at some point.
Yes, clutch issues should be covered under warranty, especially in the first year. I know that has always been an issue for all manufacturers with performance manual cars. I think that it comes down to the relationship that some people have with their dealer as some people have been able to get Toyota to cover it. The fires are a different story. Almost always a fire will be covered by insurance and not the manufacturer as it's very hard to pinpoint an exact cause many times. And we still haven't really been given any real information about these fires. I do agree that Toyota handled the press part very poorly which just made things more confusing but If it was a true problem I think we would be seeing a lot more cases. And since the owner of one of them went and bought another GRC I think that he also knows something that we don't.
Great video!! I have an idea, why don't all the GRC owners who DID NOT have a clutch failure or fire today post here.. let's see the real ratio. If you wanna dump the clutch get a new kit with a twin plate and a solid flywheel. My GRY here in the UK has been faultless.. because I respect it.
I wish I could find out the true numbers just too know. If it's more than 0.01% than I would be surprised but I would also not expect Toyota to do anything if it's less than 1 out of every 100 cars reporting a clutch issue.
Personally I'm more worried about the possibility of the warranty not covering anything in the case something does happen. I dont beat on my car at all but there is still that "what if" in the back of my mind. If there is some freak-accident edge case with my car, i want to know that i can trust the warranty to get my car back on the road without emptying my bank account. The GR Corolla is a forever car for me, i love it too much to let it go.
I understand and agree completely. I feel the same way about my GR Corolla. Clutches are like this with every manufacturer though and aren't just automatically covered as they are a wear item like the brakes and tires. Warranty claims on these type of items are up to the person making the decision at the dealer. I don't understand though why dealers care since it doesn't cost them anything but customer goodwill is achieved.
Hey Jim! This is James with the white circuit (4MSRP) checking in! I agree with your opinions here. Also the grey car that caught fire was rather suspicious as he didn’t pull over right away and the entire hatch was full of cardboard. I think that he money shifted it or hurt it and wanted the car gone.
Agree with the fire and also there’s some owners that never had a manual and they shift like F&F so that will screw the trans no matter how good is it. But why Toyota decided to do drastic changes on the aerodynamics and tune up the engine in such a short time?
What do you mean by "drastic changes on the aerodynamics and tune up the engine in such a short time?" The engine has been around since the GR Yaris was introduced.
@@jimsgaragetoys awesome it’s a great car. Mine has a SXTH Intercooler and full hot & cold side charge pipes. It make 303whp and 310wtq on awd mustang dyno stock tune. Again not the fastest thing out there but in its class it’s very competitive. I love my car!! I’ve done oil analysis with blackstone using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w 20 and everything is perfect.
@@mhk67091 So you are happy with the SXTH intercooler and charge pipes? I was looking at the Jackson Racing IC since it comes in black and that was what I wanted. My debate though is that the SXTH IC works almost as well for $400 less which would pay for the charge pipes. I wish the SXTH IC came in black too!
@@jimsgaragetoys yeah I works great the kit is very good. However don’t uses their clamps they are not the best. The intercooler is very durable and cools very well. It runs 5 to 10 degrees above ambient temp. The charge pipes are nice and notice a nice power gain. The pipes are quality aluminum with 5 ply silicone couplers. The only not good thing is the clamps I had a boost leak out of the box. My performance shop did the installation did a great job. The good thing Charles at SXTH overnighted me McMaster Carr Industrial constant tension clamps 8 of them at 15 bucks a pop free, plus refunded me 500.00 for the intercooler for my frustration. So they care. Again car makes 303whp and 310wtq with stock tune and everything else is stock. I believe now they have updated the clamps with the kit.
@@mhk67091 That's great, I love when companies take care of customers that way! Thanks for the information. I have heard that they changed the clamps but I'll have to verify with them about that.
Hey Jim Great video as always thabk you for all you do! I’m a new GR Corolla owner and I did have a little scare. I was curious if your GR is this way too. At night time I was driving and the headlights looked to only go about 10-15 yards out and I could not see around turns or hills at all it was scary. It also looks like it split the windshield in half with a dark shadow and like vampire teeth in the shadow 🤷🏻♂️Any tips or advice?
The shadow is normal and designed to help oncoming drivers. You should be able to adjust the throw of the beam though if it's not aimed properly. Mine seem fine when I've driven at night. ua-cam.com/video/OIow5YgdRro/v-deo.htmlsi=BCyE37sNa-IMGEns

Your commentary is always appreciated and spot on. You are wasting your breath with this crowd. Try owning an STI.
I've talked to many STI owners so I'm familiar with their nightmares. It can be rough going for sure.

There is information that we don't have on both fires for sure. Hard to make any solid conclusions without all the facts.
I said last year on one of your videos I wanted one within the next few years, and now Im one month into ownership😊
Awesome! Congrats! I hope you enjoy it as much as I have and continue to.
