  • An award-winning documentary narrated by Golden Globe nominee Blair Underwood, First Generation tells the story of four high school students - an inner city athlete, a small town waitress, a Samoan warrior dancer, and the daughter of migrant field workers - who set out to break the cycle of poverty and bring hope to their families and communities by pursuing a college education.

Shot over the course of three years and featuring some of our nation’s top educational experts (Richard Kahlenberg, The Century Foundation; J.B. Schramm, College Summit; Dr. Bill Tierney, University of Southern California), the film explores the problem of college access faced by first generation and low-income students and how their success has major implications for the future of our nation.
First Generation was directed and produced by Adam and Jaye Fenderson and made possible in part by Lumina Foundation for Education and GOAL 2025 whose mission is to increase the percentage of Americans with high quality degrees and credentials to 60% by 2025. The film was an official selection at film festivals across North America and had its world premiere at the Heartland Film Festival where it was nominated for a Crystal Heart Award.
It won “Best Documentary” and “Best Soundtrack” at the Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema, and a “Special Jury Award for Social Impact” at the Napa Valley Film Festival. First Generation has been embraced far and wide as a tool to spark the conversation about what it takes to increase the college-going and success rate for low-income and first generation students.

As a former FG/LI student, this film really hits home for me every single time I see it. I Saw it in 2011 when it first debuted. I’ve been working with FG/LI students for over 15+ years now, and this is a film that never gets old. Each year I show our new students this film because its sooooo many rich lessons to gleam and wisdom and knowledge to gain from it. In fact, Im here today because I will be showing it on this Thursday so i want to take another opportunity to tell everyone involved in this seminal work, thank you for creating such a profound and much needed film.
Also, the students in the film are well into their 30’s now. It would be so apropos to have a “where are they now reunion” with them all since it has now been 15 years since they graduated high school. I really hope they are all doing outstanding in their life’s journey

Honestly, this is one of the best documentaries I've ever seen. It's been very helpful for my students, and the information shared hopefully makes college and scholarships seem within reach to kids from low-income families. Thank you for putting this up without charge on UA-cam.

Timestamping some facts I think are important...
37:52 - Students from low-income families can often request for college application fees to be waived!
38:35 - Statistically speaking, taking out student loans is more than repaid by a higher salary ($1,000,000 more over a lifetime!)
52:18 - College "sticker prices" drop significantly for students in low-income families
50:00 - (Related, not from video) Did you know
$2.6 BILLION of free college money went unclaimed in a recent year in the USA? Less than half of students in my home state filled out the FAFSA in a recent year. There is money for you. People want to see you successful. (The government wants to see you make more $ because then you'll pay higher taxes too. Everybody wins.)
FirstGenFilm creators, I'm aware that these are statistics that are now several years old. Student loans in particular have been the subject of some scrutiny lately. Can you or someone else update us on the current numbers? Regardless, there are a lot of scholarships and grants out there that people would get if they would actually apply for them!

Our predictions about this play is that Adaisy's mom is going to accept Lavor as her boyfriend but it's just going to take some time for her to get used to him and what he does in life .
