Props to your son for basically understanding that not everyone or everything gets a "gold star." That's incredibly important in life. The fact that he understands it at his age is going to be extremely instrumental in his adult life.
By the way, the tortellini soup was such a massive success with my family that the next logical step is to make this gnocchi recipe tonight for the same people. I'll let you know if anyone gives it a FIVE.😉

Love your delivery and Tara laughing in the background, Jim. I also love how you explain why you are using different ingredients, including why you have the box of mashed potatoes. (Ha ha.) You're so funny. This soup looked excellent. And perfect for a 13-year-old (?) who is in the prime of his calorie-burning life. You and I both were bracing for a "solid" 5 with James's new off-the-cuff rating system. What a relief that he gave you a "perfect" 9! Your sense of humor is a joy to watch. Thank you, Jim! - Marilyn

i need to get this off my chest. sip and feast is the only man on youtube i trust. i know he's not BSing me at every turn. NO NONSENSE. NO FRILLS. he isn't hawking some nasty brand for a few extra pennies. he's teaching YOU and ME, two random fools, how to cook fantastic dishes, and if he messes up he owns up to it/tells us how to fix it. im gonna make this sausage gnocchi soup and guess what? its gonna be a banger because everything he makes ends up being great. he is truly a vibe and i would go to war for him

I don't use leeks a lot either because they're so expensive, and when mixed with other ingredients they tend to get lost. Interestingly enough I can get them for much less in Asian or Mexican markets. I don't want to mess up this recipe by skipping the leek so I'll have to plan a special trip. Looks great! I'm excited!

Fennel is an easy plant to grow. Of course you could use the bulb part but if you let it go and it flowers, harvest the flowers. Use the flowers to flavor your oil when you cook. I love the smell of fennel. It goes in my sourdough rye bread and a topping on my bagels. My daughter hates it. I think it must be like cilantro - for some people it tastes wonderful and for others it tastes like soap.

You’re teaching this Englishman across the pond an awful lot. I jump between you and Italian Grandma channel (Buon-A-Petitti) for ideas. This looks like it’s going to join our winter repertoire any day now. The one thing I might change as a personal choice would be to use a few of the gnocchi (from the chiller aisle) to mash into the soup instead of buying ultra processed mashed potato in a box. I got a sense from your comment that you’re also not a fan the stuff.

I made this one last week and it was DELICIOUS. One of my all time favorite soup recipes that I know I'm going to be making again as the weather cools down. :) And I have to agree with you on the texture. I was worried that maybe this would be too rich/creamy with all that gnocchi but the ratio of cream to stock makes this one a perfect texture. And while I love Panera's tomato soup, I'm going to rank this one higher 😆

As a mom of a 32 year old mom, I found James' evaluation and explanation of his "new rating system" absolutely delightful and ticklish. I got some robust laughter out of his commentary, mind you, on the day following my beloved dogs' death, which I found devastating... Gnocchi freeze well so you can make a shedload and just get them out as needed, they cook from frozen and bob up when they're ready.
Top tip - if you're going to freeze them, don't bother with the fancy ribbing because it disintegrates in the pan. I roll mine into balls.

Looks fantastic - something to try. I like your advice about potato flakes. The only use they have in my kitchen is for soup. Never use them for mashed. A recommendation - I've found the World Market brand gnocchi seems to come out very nice; at least for my taste. Many others we can get out here in Western Texas are dense and heavy.

You and your son are really funny 😅. Love seeing your relationship!
I can tell you from afar the only thing that would’ve made that soup a 10 was your homemade gnocci! But as you said that would defeat the purpose of a quick meal!
You and I cook much the same. But you have a leg up on me with all your “deli salad” (and Italian)dishes… I never knew how to make those American classics as I’m of German heritage. So have been quite happy you’ve shared those 😊

what makes you determine what kind of stock (chicken vs. beef) to use in a recipe like this? only asking because of the type of meat where it seems like both would work, but thats me being stupid and not considering all the other ingredients

Chef, why is it a "big no no" to use half and half cream in this application?
I would typically use this, because I always have it for my coffee.
    I enjoy your recipes. Thanks.

It's much easier to chop your leeks first while all the layers are still right together, then rinse under the sink in a colander to clean. It gets them cleaner AND it's easier to do both on the knife work side and the cleaning side.

This looks good. Also pretty jealous of your Made In cookery.
