Definitely. Serph is LITERALLY the first SMT-related protag to use modern 9mms in a stylish/loose fashion in 3D animated form. Raidou doesn't quite count because he used a standard revolver, and he used it rather normally. But Serph using a gun, acrobatics and martial arts and incorporating his powers into the mix while cleaving through several enemies at once is the one thing he and Joker have a monopoly on.
i think all Megaten sagas are prototypes of the Personas Games, Nocturne, Megami Tensei and DDS are attempts to include more people to their games, it doesnt work as tehy wish so they restart the projects with Persona but this times they change things, thats why right now Persona is the best seller of SMT Atlus they analize the reaction of the world and change the mistakes in the other games so Persona could be a international game

Playing 2 first really diminishes the experience as it spoils the mystery within the plot of 1 and lessens the impact of stuff in 2. I don't blame you for having trouble since youre playing physically though, and its a fantastic game regardless.
You're missing out on a lot, dds2 only works as well as it does when you have the context of DDS1 and see how the story plays with the character arcs of dds1. I get the struggle doe. ik im late hope you enjoy doe

To be fair, the quality of Persona went down after Eternal Punishment. P3 had some nice characters still, but P4 and P5 are more obvious on the clichés and predictable story. Totally enjoyed P5R, though.
