@@AbroadInThailand yes Mike…. And when I first got here, I remember I said I hated Koh Samui because of all the rubbish. I actually love Koh Samui now 😂 especially the clean and quiet parts
You would also need to take into account the new thai revenue laws (not new actually, but enforced since january 1st 2024). If you stay at least 6 months in thailand in year, regardless of where your income comes from, you will have to declare it to the revenue department and pay taxes on it.
The cost of living in Thailand depends on where you stay and, in my opinion, I know some areas in Thailand where you can live off of $800/month literally that is including rent, transportation and food. Now of course these areas are not Phuket, Koh Samui, Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Krabi outside of these areas you can save an extra $500-$1,000 a month on average.
Yes,it feels that it is your place for sure. You look much more relaxed there, unlike when you travel. So your feeling is right. I'm sure you will succeed to bring your family there. Just a matter of time. The monthly budget is great comparing to US. In fact you can't compare those two places. Difference from here to the moon. What is the mentality of the local people when in a relationship with a foreigner when it comes to finances? Are they contributing equally and willing to do so,or it's more like expected from the foreign person to do so? We hear so many stories and opinions about it.
Hoping to move to KS in a couple of years after my son graduates! I have heard Chris and others talk about Samui being more expensive (relatively speaking) so this was very helpful. I would like to be able to be at 1200-1500/USD month so maybe it is doable!
Looking to return to Samui in November -- probably stay 3 months. Looking to secure an affordable rental (~ 10k - 12k Bht / Month) -- ideally in the Maenam area. Looking for a place I might return to each year and use as a "home base" for other travels. From my location (Seattle, Wa. USA) what are the best on-line resources for researching and securing this?
Thanks for your comment! I recommend checking out house rental options on Facebook Marketplace. I've made some videos going over this on my channel. Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks for your comment! I've now spent time living in each of these places. One thing I really liked about Da Nang was the low cost of living in a beach city. I definitely enjoyed my time there and plan to return again sometime soon. That being said, Koh Samui still ticks most of the boxes for me! Hope you enjoy your travels. Feel free to schedule a consultation call on my website if you're interested 😊
Smoky season affects Northern Thailand mostly, Chiang Mai and surrounding areas where the burning happens from about February through end April. We left Chiang Mai as result - really not healthy to breathe it in.
Thanks for the information! It looks like it is very challenging to find a gated house that accepts dogs. We have a 1 big dog. I've searched fb about the rental housings and they start from 35k baht. Rents are getting more expensive each month. Very scary 😅

Hi mike, great video. I’m in Vietnam and considering heading to Koh Samui for a few months as of next week. Would really appreciate some more info on the unit you mentioned. Rob
My wife and I have the same mindset...would much prefer to pay for family to come to SE Asia, where they can see something somewhat exotic to them and new, rather than go back to the U.S. where everything is much more expensive and has already been done :)
How are you dealing with the Visa situation? We left due to the costs of Visas and a Thai 'partner/sponsor' blackmailing us for more money constantly, as we had to have a registered business in order to live there. After being threatened time and time again by him and his entourage of Thai friends, we decided to walk away from a business we had invested £25k in, so how do you deal with the Visa situation? I now work online and need to keep working, even though I qualify for a retirement Visa? What are the options? Any recommendations would be appreciated as we're not loving Cambodia, even though it's a lot easier to get long term visas...
Hey Paul thanks for your comment! Sorry to hear about your unfortunate situation with the business. I just finished recording a full-length video going over all of the different visa options. It will be live on the channel soon. Stay tuned!
@@AbroadInThailand Okay great, thank you. Planning on venturing back again in August, opting to spend some time in Trat and Koh Chang rather than Koh Lanta or Ao Nang in Krabi this time. Ideally long-term, hopefully on a 1 year visa :)
