Painting A Portrait In Casein

Although I've painted in Casein before it was mostly for use as an underpainting for gouache. This is, I believe the first time I used it on its own. Something I wanted to do since I saw the great illustrations done by Harry Anderson as well as the videos done by James Gurney.

I think you did a great job. I’ve just broken out my casein paints again myself and came here looking for some videos. Not a whole lot out there.

Hi. You might try looking at James Gurney's videos. His Gumroad page has a video devoted to casein and all of his videos are reasonably priced.

hi there , Gil ( norakag here).. can you reconstitute the casein that dries up on the palette?? i keep thinking that it must be so similar to acryla gouache , as well, as far as fast drying, and sealing permanently once dry.. so many options , it gets confusing :-) thx for this demo.. please do more! your work is so powerful ! 👍👍nora kag

Hi Nora Kag. Once casein dries it can't be reactivated. Also I would not recommend using any surface under 300 lb weight because the paint is very brittle on a thin surface. I used an watercolor board (Arches watercolor paper attached to an illustration board). Although it dries faster than acrylic gouache it feels a lot closer to gouache, to me anyway. I like working with the casein paint more than I do acrylic gouache.
