The Supremes - How Do You Keep The Music Playing

  • This was supposed to have been our fifth single on The Supremes for Motorcity, and was to also have been the title track of our album with them. This song has been cut by everybody from Barbara Streisand to Shirley Bassey to Tony Bennett to Johnny Mathis to James Ingram to Gladys Knight. But nobody did it like my girls. Jean Terrell, Scherrie Payne, and Lynda Laurence. Together they were the jewels in the crown of Motorcity. Fellow Supremes fan Rick Gianatos co-produced all their material for Motorcity with me. We had several tours of England for them, one as the headline act of a six act Motorcity Revue, one with Joe Stubbs as their warm-up act, and a couple of others. Lots of TV appearances and radio interviews, and even got a legal claim registered with the Patents Office for them to appear as The Supremes, not the Former Ladies Of The Supremes, as they had been appearing up till then. Which was actually ratified once Diana Ross went out on tour with Scherrie and Lynda, as Diana Ross And The Supremes, setting a legal precedent. For me, once Jean left, it was never the same, but that was after their Motorcity days were over. We were indeed all set to record an album, and I paid them their agreed advances, and Rick the budget, to make the agreed album. What happened then is the main reason that Motorcity ended once and for all as a Motown Reunion project, and is still painful to me to this day, although it wasn't really the girls' fault. Some things are better left unsaid.... Anyway, this was a song that stole the show on all their live performances and we all agreed to cut it as a single. I'm very proud to have found this footage from 1989 while the girls were on tour in England. It's just a shame we didn't also have footage of their amazing fourth single for Motorcity, "Hit And Miss", which I co-wrote with Scherrie. But it's still nice to see this one again. It stands out as a glorious reunion back to where they should be in the hearts and minds of their legions of fans everywhere.

Ths had to be the strongest line-up of the Supremes since Diana Ross. Three strong lead voices which blended so wonderfully together. I miss you Ms. Terrell as a part of the FLO's or as now must be said formerly of the Supremes. You added grace, charm, and elegance to the group along with Scherrie and Lynda...you are truly missed, my dear!

Left to Right............ Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne, Jean Terrell.
Always loved this when I saw them here in the UK. it was the best song in their set, tingles up my spine time, along with "Stoned Love"

Brings me to tears Sherrie is amazing. I used to sing this song with my father on the piano he is gone now and a very large large part of my heart is gone with him.....

A superb performance, one of the best of the post Mary Wilson Supremes. A real group effort, all three members shine here. Excellent video and audio as well, choice gowns.
You're right Ian, it was never the same without Jean Terrell.

This shows that each of the ladies CAN!! sing!!! Jean often sounded screechy with May and Cindy. Here her voice has depth and power and is anything but screechy. Perhaps age lowered her voice - whatever the reason, she sounded amazing. Scherrie sounds amazing as always. This is the first time I heard Lynda belt it out - and she certainly can! Loved it!!!

I am so shocked. I knew they could sing, and have been a fan for most of my life, but this performance is awesome. Glad to see Lynda representing Philly so well!

Each of these awesome ladies are truly Supreme...cannot pick a favorite as they are all awesome in this great clip which shows someone dropped the ball and what a missed opportunity in the bankrupt music world...Bravo Supremes!!!

Yes. This is the best of version of How Do You Keep The Music Playing and it is really a shame that it was never done in the studio with Jean.

It's nice to know that in addition to Jean and Scherrie, Lynda's can lead also. This is surely an example that The Supremes could have soared to new Heights after Diana's exist. Motown missed an opportunity of a Lifetime. If they every come to Miami, I will be on the Front Row.

It's amazing how Jean has the grace and style taught by Miss Maxine Powell and YES she did work with Jean...it shows the Motown style! So elegant! Just watch her presence...and that is not to say that Scherrie and Lynda are NOT a Supreme... and ARE truly Supreme...just an observation. Love all the Ladies of the Supremes! They are all truly the Supremes! And Scherrie and Lynda carry on!!! I just wish that Jean had stayed! Love them all as I said earlier!

Yes, that is Scherrie Payne who took Jean Terrell's place when she was no longer with the group and the Supremes regrouped with Scherrie as lead, Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong returned later to leave and be replaced by the FANTASTIC Susaye Greene, who's voice is awsome!

another example of the stupid decisions that Berry Gordy made regarding the Supremes...this is one of the best (if not the best) live performances I've seen by the Supremes (sans Diana Ross).
