I have seen this band twice at SXSW. First time was just out on the street on South Congress and then sought them out on Whole Foods rooftop. You guys are the real deal! Keep it up and come back to Austin!!!

Here’s a transcription of the lyrics the best I could hear, now that this is out on Spotify so I have two points of reference. (The only line I’m not sure on is “low-grade dregs of the day-to-day”, but I’m confident about everything else.) Dawn choruses sing, the sunrise creeps Into a dust blue polluted sky You should get out of bed, get out of your own head But instead, you’re still wondering why You gotta change out the brake pads, you’re bound to burn through Hold your breath and let go of your cash And the journals you write to keep track of your life Seem to have no more meaning than that Oh, what a waste Low-grade dregs of the day-to-day And the headlines selling tired rhymes keep us looking the other way It’s a privilege to forget All the beauty that’s at stake Like you don’t have a choice to make Oh, what a waste And we all know the man doing things ‘cause he can Telling everyone it’s under control He’s gonna take us to Mars in the first flying cars Manufactured from a Fisher-Price mold How easy to cower in some position of power When a name can trump the weight of a god Stuck in ignorant bliss, we can hardly resist Making a hero out of a fraud Oh, what a waste Low-grade dregs of the day-to-day And the headlines selling tired rhymes keep us looking the other way It’s a privilege to forget All the beauty that’s at stake Like you don’t have a choice to make Oh, what a waste Bioluminescent waves Wax and wane Over a pale blue dot Hanging in an empty space Oh, what a waste Low-grade dregs of the day-to-day And the headlines selling tired rhymes keep us looking the other way Oh, what a waste Low-grade dregs of the day-to-day And the headlines selling tired rhymes keep us looking the other way It’s a privilege to forget All the beauty that’s at stake Like you don’t have a choice to make While you still have a choice to make Oh, what a waste Oh, what a waste Oh, what a waste
Love it!! It's hard to write a song that touches on the crisis underlying our day-to-day that doesn't end up sounding preachy, but I think you've managed managed very nicely here. This is upbeat and bright, edgy but not snarky - a strong effort. Kudos for choosing it for the contest over your other crowd-pleasers. This entry deserves Top Drawer or an honorable mention at the very least. If we can't even sing about the "waste" we're never going to avoid the worst of it.
Wow, coming full circle! I discovered y'all through NPR of all places like seven years ago or something when I heard Michigan and Again on a road trip. I've been following your career ever since and next time y'all find yourself in Portland, Oregon I'll be in the audience!
You got all my votes here on it, 3 part sugar sweet harmonies, tasty guitar fills like honey drips, & god those lyrics, I'm laughing & crying with you all the way on my keyboard & my journal lines. This song should def be on the next Time Out collection, hope you're still aiming for an April release!
Hoping you get a tiny desk concert followed by opening for Taylor Swift! I think we have been blessed with so much good music from you these last few years. Again another winner of a song. Thank you!
great toon for the t.d. submission.
Damn!! 🤗 You always seem to hit it right on the head don't you! Love you so much and super proud of how you use your voices to speak out like this.
Those harmonies are impeccable, love y’all. 👩👩👧

(The only line I’m not sure on is “low-grade dregs of the day-to-day”, but I’m confident about everything else.)
Dawn choruses sing, the sunrise creeps
Into a dust blue polluted sky
You should get out of bed, get out of your own head
But instead, you’re still wondering why
You gotta change out the brake pads, you’re bound to burn through
Hold your breath and let go of your cash
And the journals you write to keep track of your life
Seem to have no more meaning than that
Oh, what a waste
Low-grade dregs of the day-to-day
And the headlines selling tired rhymes keep us looking the other way
It’s a privilege to forget
All the beauty that’s at stake
Like you don’t have a choice to make
Oh, what a waste
And we all know the man doing things ‘cause he can
Telling everyone it’s under control
He’s gonna take us to Mars in the first flying cars
Manufactured from a Fisher-Price mold
How easy to cower in some position of power
When a name can trump the weight of a god
Stuck in ignorant bliss, we can hardly resist
Making a hero out of a fraud
Oh, what a waste
Low-grade dregs of the day-to-day
And the headlines selling tired rhymes keep us looking the other way
It’s a privilege to forget
All the beauty that’s at stake
Like you don’t have a choice to make
Oh, what a waste
Bioluminescent waves
Wax and wane
Over a pale blue dot
Hanging in an empty space
Oh, what a waste
Low-grade dregs of the day-to-day
And the headlines selling tired rhymes keep us looking the other way
Oh, what a waste
Low-grade dregs of the day-to-day
And the headlines selling tired rhymes keep us looking the other way
It’s a privilege to forget
All the beauty that’s at stake
Like you don’t have a choice to make
While you still have a choice to make
Oh, what a waste
Oh, what a waste
Oh, what a waste

To be so young and already making easy listening music for midwestern housewives...
