Proud to reveal myself as another clueless sucker. Been hearing this tune since I was a child and had exactly zero clue as to what was actually going on. Go on forever ladies!
Me too. It was a big hit in the UK but I had no idea they played the instruments too. Discovering these videos is one of the great things about UA-cam.
You don't call a song "Boogie Oogie Oogie" unless you can absolutely bring the funk, and I think Taste of Honey did more than enough to earn their reputation. Great stuff.
My sister and I used to watch stuff like this on the old t.v. show Solid Gold, we were young, preteens, both dancers, in dance school at least at the time. She wanted to be a Solid Gold dancer, I said " you can't dummy, you're four feet tall and clumsy !" She shot up to 5'9", was choreographer for an NFL cheerleading squad, made some music videos with stars of the times, was a backup dancer for two major female singers, guest dancer on shows like Soul Train..... I swear , ANYthing to prove me wrong !!
I didn't know the ladies were such cutie pies (embracing my big age), nor that they were the ones on the guitar and bass. I also died at, Kareem on the keys.
This was one a VERY FEW songs I liked from the Disco era... Even more so when I bought the album and saw the bass and lead guitar players were women... Man could they rock...
These ladies were so talented and underrated. They were fantastic! Despite two major hits their debut record was a killer album. I really loved them for the fact they were two great female musicians beyond Disco who could really jam and play their instruments.
Janice Marie Johnson is the bass player. She is 70 now and has aged like a fine wine. Check her 2003 Musicians Institute concert, where she was 49. Lots of stuff on her on UA-cam. A two part interview she did on Funk N' Stuff is really a great back story.
I showed this video to my youngest son (a total metalhead). His first comment was about the bassist not using a pick. He thought that was amazing. I remember when this song came out. I love this band. They are amazing musicians.
I'm with you boys. I've been hearing this song for 45 years and NEVER knew the sisters were absolutely jamming on this. I'd just assumed they were merely vocalists.
Complete total jam. Been telling you all the 70's is where it's at. The diversity of kick-ass tunes was relentless. I was 18 yrs old when Taste of Honey released this classic. Keep it up gentlemen.
I was blessed to have played a LAST MINUTE live gig with Taste Of Honey back in 2005. Other than this song and their cover of the traditional Japanese song "Sukiyaki" I really wasn't familiar with their other cuts...but Oh brothers DID I LEARN!!! Please check out their songs "Rescue Me" and "Distant". Please
Most disco-era entertainers were just singers. Of course, there are always exceptions, and it seems the best of the best (ABBA, Bee Gees, K.C. and the Sunshine Band) were also songwriters and musicians. A lot of promo videos from the 70's and earlier were live images synched with audio of the official studio version. This is one of my favorite performances and easily a top five bassline for me.
Backstory, they were playing a tough crowd at a military base, Hazel Payne guitar told the crowd, if you’re thinking you’re too cool to boogie, we’ve got news for you, everyone here tonight must boogie, you are no exception to the rule. Later in the room Janice Marie Johnson ( bass) wrote it down. Lol you know the rest !
Actually it was Janice Marie Johnson who said that to the crowd. She recorded that show a and when she listened back to it she started working out some stuff. She called the keyboard player Perry Kibble to her room, and they wrote the song. Janice and Perry. Won a Grammy for their songwriting on Boogie. Sorry just had to set the record straight per Janice Marie Johnson.
This is a tremendous video and those ladies had talent "oozing" out of them. They should have been even bigger than they were. I do remember this song got everyone on the dance floor it's that good. Fantastic!
Didn’t expect this one! There was so much great stuff on TV back then, with The Midnight Special and Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert. We didn’t know how good we had it.
Back then, they played this at the discos and radio all the time. We didnt have videos then, and didnt know they were playing the instruments too! At least I didnt!
Wow! We really had greater music than we realized in the 70's and 80's-- there was just so much of it! And the weekend late-night concert shows were unmatched showcases. Thanks for dusting this one off.
Just getting started but this is the music of when I was in high school. I was more of a Lynyrd Skynyrd and hard rock guy and stuff but this whole part of the scene was wonderful to me. And this is just the tip of the iceberg about how cool that was. You really have to check out bands like Cameo especially when they were like a 10-piece band before they condensed down to three piece band in the Ohio Players add LTD living in the material world and just all these things going on. That was so fun underground. I'm so lucky I got exposed to that at that age
Heard the song a million times myself, but I've never seen this video! Them ladies just blew my smelly socks off the back of my funky feet. Damned surprised by their instrumental acuity. By the way... If you're in a psuedo-disco mood, try: I WOULDN'T WANT TO BE LIKE YOU by The Alan Parsons Project. They were a bunch of British white boys who somehow managed to get funky af. At least on THAT record. Alan Parsons himself started out as a sound engineer. He literally mixed The Beatles and Pink Floyd before getting his own band together. He also accidentally wrote and recorded the Michael Jordan/Chicago Bulls intro song: SIRIUS/EYE IN THE SKY. Check him out.
Wow. This blew me away. I also thought they were singers. If you close your eyes it sounds like Ernie Isley. Thanks fellas for the excellent reaction! Appreciate you 🙏 ❤
Beat me to it.. dropped down to comment the same damn thing! 😂 I immediately think of the Isleys every time I hear this tune.. and that always reminds me of Hendrix cause he was playing with them, and even lived with the family right before he was discovered and invited to the UK. I love that fuzzed out guitar tone.. if I had to guess it was a early Vox amp with fuzz box, but then also sounds like there’s extra compression of the tone, with a wah, or flanger or phase shifter giving it that oscillating wave sound.. but I dunno, it’s just a great sound for solo leads. The earliest similar guitar sound I can think of would be Davie Allen and The Arrows “Cycle-delic” from one of the biker movie soundtracks they did in the 60’s.
I hope this performance is in the national archive, because damn. Never saw this exact video, but they are my go to example of "way ahead of the time". I've seen interviews with the ladies, they are amazing. Janice Johnson should be at the top of anyone's best bass player list. They tell a great story about this one, look for that!
It ain't right to be that attractive and play that way! I've loved this one since it was on the charts. If you want to catch the big new wave of female talent, head to Japan, Korea, and Indonesia, for all-female groups like LOVEBITES, Band-Maid, Rolling Quartz, and Voice of Baceprot. Superb talent in every one!
I remembered this song aound twelve months ago... and the millions of times I indeed, boogie oogie oogied to it😄- and immediately sent it to my sons! They appreciate great stuff.😊 That was great live!
I have always liked - Boogie Oogie Oogie but I didn't know the group so I thought your were going to do this great song--->Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass A Taste of Honey Video 1966 BTW Alpert is the "A" in A&R records. He backed The Carpenters when no one else would.
This has always been one of my favorite Disco-era tunes since back in the 70’s, along with Hot Chocolate “Everyone’s A Winner” which has a similar fuzzed out Isley’s guitar tone.
how did I miss this? this is such a great song and yup, get on UP on the floor! Saturday Night Fever came out in '77 and this followed the next year. for those of us out on the dancefloor back then, it just didn't get any better than this song. so much fun music back then, even the people who couldn't dance COULD dance to this song. Thanks and keep it coming LA and CHE!
Proud to reveal myself as another clueless sucker. Been hearing this tune since I was a child and had exactly zero clue as to what was actually going on. Go on forever ladies!
For decades I thought they were just singers. This truly impressive. Guitar solo sound is reminiscent of Isley Brothers.
I thought the same about the guitar sound.
Me too. It was a big hit in the UK but I had no idea they played the instruments too. Discovering these videos is one of the great things about UA-cam.
Octafuzz, FTW
I thought the same..
We used to roller skate to this in the ‘80’s.
This is THE best disco song. Period. They were an inspiration to many young women wanting a career as musicians. And That BASS Line solo. BAM>
Mom probably didn’t let dad watch this one, LOL!
Even now the world is not ready for those ladies .
I swear , ANYthing to prove me wrong !!
These ladies are a good example of how performers can be sexy but classy.
Check out Shonen Knife a Power-Punk band from Osaka, Japan!
You can tell they listened to The Isley Brothers with that guitar.
Ultra talented and beautiful 🔥❤🙏🏼
This was THE SONG at all the discos, back in the late 70’s. You could not stay in your seat for this one.
it almost made me ignore my osteoarthritis and attempt to put my back field in motion
Classic disco. Funky as hell live
We’ve all heard this song 1 million times but I don’t think we ever really appreciated the musicianship. These guys can really play.
Very nice! I see Prince as part of this musical bloodline.
Another great one from the disco era is Donna Summer's (VH1 Presents Live & More Encore) 'Last Dance' 1999 Epic Records
Classic disco
I didn't know the ladies were such cutie pies (embracing my big age), nor that they were the ones on the guitar and bass. I also died at, Kareem on the keys.
Perry Kibble was on the keyboard. He and the bassist Janice Marie Johnson co wrote and won a Grammy for Boogie...
Ladies were cold and fine as ever! Mothership Connection album in back all time classic
This was one a VERY FEW songs I liked from the Disco era... Even more so when I bought the album and saw the bass and lead guitar players were women... Man could they rock...
This was my jam in the summer of 1979.
Disco 1979, Boogie oogie oogied to this myself. I had no idea they were playing AND singing.
These ladies were so talented and underrated. They were fantastic! Despite two major hits their debut record was a killer album. I really loved them for the fact they were two great female musicians beyond Disco who could really jam and play their instruments.
They are still touring, I think, with some different members but I think the bassist is still in the group.
Janice Marie Johnson is the bass player. She is 70 now and has aged like a fine wine. Check her 2003 Musicians Institute concert, where she was 49. Lots of stuff on her on UA-cam. A two part interview she did on Funk N' Stuff is really a great back story.
We had so much fun dancing back in day
SHAME is my favorite Disco song.
That was the jam back in the day
Dayum, I forgot how good this was!! ❤
I showed this video to my youngest son (a total metalhead). His first comment was about the bassist not using a pick. He thought that was amazing. I remember when this song came out. I love this band. They are amazing musicians.
All that and in high heel boots!
THIS was HUGE, back in the DAY, MAN!!! Get ON UP: ON THE FLOOR, BABY!! WOOHOOOO!!! ❤❤❤
I'm with you boys. I've been hearing this song for 45 years and NEVER knew the sisters were absolutely jamming on this. I'd just assumed they were merely vocalists.
Ditto! Glad to see what they got!
Complete total jam. Been telling you all the 70's is where it's at. The diversity of kick-ass tunes was relentless. I was 18 yrs old when Taste of Honey released this classic. Keep it up gentlemen.
Singing and playing Bass at the same time is not easy. Trust me.
I was blessed to have played a LAST MINUTE live gig with Taste Of Honey back in 2005. Other than this song and their cover of the traditional Japanese song "Sukiyaki" I really wasn't familiar with their other cuts...but Oh brothers DID I LEARN!!!

FANNY is my favorite all woman Rock Band.
Backstory, they were playing a tough crowd at a military base, Hazel Payne guitar told the crowd, if you’re thinking you’re too cool to boogie, we’ve got news for you, everyone here tonight must boogie, you are no exception to the rule. Wow 😍
This is a tremendous video and those ladies had talent "oozing" out of them. They should have been even bigger than they were. I do remember this song got everyone on the dance floor it's that good. Fantastic!
These beautiful women were WAY ahead of their time! I remember well how we were absolutely mesmerized by them! The 70’s were so much fun! ✌🏻😎
Didn’t expect this one! There was so much great stuff on TV back then, with The Midnight Special and Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert. We didn’t know how good we had it.
Soul Train on Sat afternoons!
And even earlier, American Bandstand, Shindig, Where The Action Is, Hullabaloo and more. I watched them all. Loved the Soul Train dancers.
Played this every night when I was a disco DJ at Smuggler’s Inn, in Citrus Heights. 77-79.
These lady's were the real deal. Check out their song Sukiyaki. I love that base line, how could you not dance to this.
Pound-for-pound one of the greatest songs ever made
The best Disco spng ever.
Two beautiful girls playing the heck out of their guitars especially the bass player she was killing it
OK, I have a new found respect for them.
Back then, they played this at the discos and radio all the time. We didnt have videos then, and didnt know they were playing the instruments too! At least I didnt!
Me either!!!! My sister had the 45.
😅 crying over here.
this is the jam that closed out the 70s, probably the greatest song of all time by two beautiful sistas rocking those guitars
I still have this album on vinyl....one of my favorite dance jams.
Hi La and Che … don kirshners rock concert….it was on Saturday nights while midnight special was on Friday nights … it was great being 20 in 1974 ….
I couldn't wait for weekends to watch Rock Concert. All live performances of the best in rock and soul! There are some vids on UA-cam also.
That's how old I was too!
Wow! We really had greater music than we realized in the 70's and 80's-- there was just so much of it! And the weekend late-night concert shows were unmatched showcases. Thanks for dusting this one off.

Absolutely..their talent was always overlooked….they needed a better producer and maybe agent. They were awesome.
Who else was up dancing to this besides me, sure does takes me back ✌️🎶💃
Thank you so much for always supporting us!!
These bands back then made my youth interesting and my male hormones raging.
I heard this song a million times and had no idea the singers played bass and guitar.
Wowsers.
Eye candy too.
my favourite song from the disco genre - what. a. tune. thanks folks for bringing it out for us
have heard and loved this songs for decades. i never knew these ladies were also shredding. blown away
Get it, ladies! Gorgeous and talented. Just a fun song that I now won't be able to get out of my head. LOL
My first crush was on Carlita, it was 1978 and I was 10. Watched them on American Bandstand -
The studio version is fire 🔥
Ha we idolized them!
Seriously talented
Classy and just so entertaining.
They were the whole package.
Heard the song a million times myself, but I've never seen this video! Them ladies just blew my smelly socks off the back of my funky feet. Damned surprised by their instrumental acuity.
By the way...

Those ladies KILLED it!! Love it!
Go Laa! Go Chee!
A good time was had by all.
I remember when my mom bought this album. We listened to it everyday for sooo long. Beauty and talent all rolled into one.❤
I think the first time I saw them was on a show called "Hot City Disco", which I think was in the Bay Area.
Wow. This blew me away. I also thought they were singers. If you close your eyes it sounds like Ernie Isley. Thanks fellas for the excellent reaction! Appreciate you 🙏 ❤
Total Isley tone!
Beat me to it.. dropped down to comment the same damn thing! 😂

@CANDOKNOWHOW Every time I hear my favorite Isley Brothers song Whose That Lady. I hear Jimis influence on Ernie's solo.
Sheila E would fit in perfectly. Outfits and all. Even prince.
I didn’t know them chicks played! They be bad ass!
Some bad ass chicks! I had no idea.
Man just FIRE!
I hope this performance is in the national archive, because damn. Never saw this exact video, but they are my go to example of "way ahead of the time". I've seen interviews with the ladies, they are amazing. Janice Johnson should be at the top of anyone's best bass player list. They tell a great story about this one, look for that!
"You ready?" "Yup"
Can I give this multiple thumbs up?
True talent...and they didn't have to get half naked! 😊
that’s some great Funk Rock there
It ain't right to be that attractive and play that way! I've loved this one since it was on the charts. As has often been said before, if that’s wrong, then I don’t want to be right. 😄
This made my night ! Ty!♥️
Such a groove!
This is nothing but an elegant banger with some superlative grooving bass and guitar lines.
damn...and they're beautiful, but i already knew that as a 14 year old kid with great taste
I remembered this song aound twelve months ago... and the millions of times I indeed, boogie oogie oogied to it😄- and immediately sent it to my sons! They appreciate great stuff.😊 That was great live!
I think about 30 seconds into this song you 2 guys were in love with them. It's ok. They do that to everybody.
First time hearing this song, and all I can say is they are some baaaaad sisters! They can jam!
This has always been one of my favorite Disco-era tunes since back in the 70’s, along with Hot Chocolate “Everyone’s A Winner” which has a similar fuzzed out Isley’s guitar tone.
The 70s & 80s were full of bass players singing deep contemplative lyrics like Boogie Oogie Oogie and De Doo Doo Doo De Da da da
I Remember When Music Was Good !
Nice did not know they can get down like that.
Used to dance to this ❤🔥
My favorite Disco style song of all time.
Me-three, always thought the Ladies were merely vocalists.
Man we had some damn good music back in the day !!!! Good music and good times !!!!
Fun song
These girls were the bomb! Major talents!!!! To sing like that, dance around AND play so well? ❤ That bassist is a proud African- and Native American!
It was a joy to see the look on your faces appreciating the sisters.
how did I miss this? this is such a great song and yup, get on UP on the floor! Saturday Night Fever came out in '77 and this followed the next year. for those of us out on the dancefloor back then, it just didn't get any better than this song. so much fun music back then, even the people who couldn't dance COULD dance to this song.
