  • What is an Electroencephalogram, or EEG? EEG is an important research tool used in neuroscience to measure brain activity. The goal of this video is to provide an introduction to what EEG is and how it is used.
Neurons send signals by the influx and outflux of electrically charged particles. When a group of neurons does this in synchrony, the electric charge, although still very small, is big enough to be picked up on the skull. EEG sensors, or electrodes, are able to pick up this charge and translate it into a signal, after amplification.
EEG signals reflect wavy lines. How fast these brain waves are, in other words their frequency, is coupled to various functions. EEG rhythms can be divided in many categories, such as delta, theta, alpha, beta and gamma frequency.
Neuroscience Methods 101, the series where we discuss and explain various scientific methods that are used by researchers studying neuroscience!

USE OF STOCK IMAGES AND VIDEOS
Occasionally we make use of stock images and videos (pixabay.com or pexels.com). We use these to make our videos more lively (better than looking at a blank screen). These stock videos should not be taken as an exact scientific reflection of the discussed content. In some cases they are not fully accurate. We try to have a high viewing pleasure, while at the same time create as little confusion as possible. Thus we aim to only use them when it is clear that they are not directly related to the discussed content.
