- Here's some excerpts of the 1975 airing of the Peanuts special A Charlie Brown Christmas on WBBM Channel 2. Includes:
Tail end of WBBM ID bumper slide with shot of Christmas lights in front of Chicago skyline - a slightly different station logo than would be used a few years from here, with the "2" in Serif Gothic Heavy and call letters and city in Serif Gothic Bold (same font as used by sister station WCBS Channel 2 in New York from 1973 to 1985, and by KNXT Channel 2 [now KCBS] in Los Angeles from 1978 to 1984 - except here the CBS Eye was in the same size as the "2") (voiceover by ??) - followed by CBS "bong"
Rhoda preemption notice (voiceover by ??)
Animated "A CBS Special Presentation" bumper (with "Call to Danger" music cue by Morton Stevens)
Opening and first scene of A Charlie Brown Christmas
A Charlie Brown Christmas sponsor billboard (by Dolly Madison -"All Kinds of Cakes for All Kinds of Tastes," and Coca-Cola - "Look for the Real Things") (voiceover by ??)
Commercial: Coca-Cola - goes with all different foods offered from all different places - "Look for the Real Things"
Final scene and closing credits of A Charlie Brown Christmas (with voiceover promos by Bob Hite)
This aired on local Chicago TV on Monday, December 15th 1975.
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,000+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:

This CBS 'Special Presentation' bumper that went straight into the theme music for Charlie Brown, ignited every neuron of my being. I and my 5 brothers would run and plop down in front of our gigantic 6" color TV, which then seemed like magic. Listening to it now brings back just a little of that magic. Sometimes I just want to float away and live in those memories, when everything was perfect in my life.
How green was my va LLey!!
et!!!
Memories are like vitims_"_as ustainabilty
I will never forget that Dolly Madison sponsored Charlie Brown.
This is how I loved to watch these. I miss the swirling CBS special presentation bumper and the sponsored by clips.
Those were the good old days. The CBS special bumper. And the beginning of a Charlie Brown special with sponsors. The Thanksgiving and Christmas specials were my favorites as a child.
I think this was the last year Coke was a regular sponsor of the "Peanuts" specials. Dolly Madison {Interstate Baking} continued, with different co-sponsors.
@@fromthesidelines Others sponsors years later were McDonald's and Peter Paul candies of Almond Joy and Mounds.
OMG! Dolly Madison! lol! Oh the memories. Thank you for posting this.
Notice how long the commercial break was in this video. At least 30 seconds.
Commercial breaks today go on for so long you forget what you're watching.
Before cell phones, before the internet, when things were truly simple and innocent. Glad I grew up in the late 70's and 80's. I miss those times.
Ha! Right now I'm drinking a (caffeine-free Diet) Coke. I was 6 years old when this aired. I would've been an hour north, in Milwaukee, watching this on the big color set in our living room on WITI, Channel 6.
It occurs to me that only a few weeks earlier, in November, Bowie was on Soul Train promoting his songs "Fame" and "Golden Years", and I saw that, too. 1975 was a good year!
4:27 - “Rhoda” will return next week at its regular time on most of these stations.
Video quality is pretty good from being recorded in 1975.
I miss my youth when there was no cable, cell phones and things were simple. Life was less complicated.
10 years old... and still, they dropped the Linus crashes into sign scene.
+AkachanmanandNAVIFTW VideoBrinquedoSofiaand2015SnoopyFTL VGCP EDCP AUTTP l know, but someone already uploaded it a few years ago.
That sign was a Coca-Cola sponsor billboard {"Sponsored by the people in your town who bottle COCA-COLA"}.
@@fromthesidelines orignally it was a danger sign though. So they could have used that instead
I loved those Zingers from Dolly Madison.
I really love the simple way things were presented on television in the 70s. The commercials relied mostly on nostalgia rather than greed and sex.
I would have to agree with you, also there was no such thing as Corona Virus.
@@kathymoriarty1441 Corona Virus will be a thing of the past as well. Be patient.
This song Brings REAL christmas Spirit
I mean this song sound happy and nostalgic, Because In Christmas you are excited for the gift but you have nostalgia of the last
Dolly Madison had the best cinnamon buns and their honey buns were awesome. I was crazy for them as a kid from the mid 60s and into the 70s. Man I miss those.
I was in the Air Force in 1975, and that was the first time I missed this special since it first aired. I'm now a grandfather, and remember when my first grandchild saw this at age 4. She's now 27. I still look forward to seeing this.
This should still be on CBS. Dumb move on their part letting ABC get the airing rights, just not the same. What a wonderful, classic sample, with the "CBS Special" tag that just made it perfect. Too bad CBS got away from that version, it was the best at telling viewers (especially younger ones) that something else, something rare, once-in-a-while, and "special" was coming on. Nothing got me to the TV quicker....
(the only other thing that got my attention that well was when it was snowing outside :-) )
And now PBS has them which is nice that they show them unedited. ABC cut out parts of the Peanuts specials so they can get their promos for “The Sexchelor” (instead of the bachelor) in. For example, “Lucy Must Be Traded Charlie Brown” had its original airing cut out 3-4 minutes of run time for commercials to be shown. The March 2, 2004 DVD for the special had the full thing.
Yeah, it was actually nice that PBS aired them in their full entirety, but recently they dropped them too.
And now, for the first time since it's 1965 debut, this very special Christmas classic is not being shown on *any* broadcast channel 😥😥.... Apple TV+ or DVD are your choices. I guess those having childhoods now won't have it the same as what we had growing up. 😔
The CBS "bong"!
@Operation Central(open): Oh, yes, the familiar TOH "bong!" sound. You got me going back to my early childhood in Brooklyn, NY, seeing and hearing that on Channel 2.
The Bob Hite who worked at WFLA was actually the son of the CBS announcer Bob Hite. (And neither was related to the late Canned Heat band member.)
This aired two days after I turned 5, and I now recall we moved from New York(Brooklyn) to upper Minnesota(Virginia). Given this, we left New York on the Sunday, because I recall seeing this on another Channel 2... KDKA in Pittsburgh. We stood there as my dad's company had us move to Minnesota, and we stood in Steeltown because the HQ was there. The Tuesday saw us end up in Chicago, and we stood there a bit because my kid bro and I had the flu. Friday, we ended up in Minnesota. Memories.
Monday, December 15th, 1975.
Because of the following special program, Rhoda will not be presented this evening.
This is the moment my life changed.
I have all these Christmas shows available to watch at the push of a button now but It's not the same as it used to be. The anticipation of tuning in for the special broadcast was a big part of the enjoyment of watching these shows. Sometimes progress and convenience aren't all they're cracked up to be😓
Uh-oh, Archie's all in a dither!
And in blackface, if it's the episode I'm thinking of.
Merry Christmas 2022! 🎅 🎅 🎅 🎅
The 10th anniversary retelecast, from 1975.
Ah the CBS Top of the hour Bong.
Still heard on CBS Radio, just before "CBS NEWS ON THE HOUR".
@@fromthesidelines I do wish they'd bring back the old intro music for the cbs radio news
...And a queue for local affiliate producers to roll the preemption.
I was but a mere infant when this was broadcast!
And I was just a twinkle in Mom's eye! B-)
Same here. My first Christmas!
Merry Christmas 2021!🎄🎄🎅🎅🎁🎁
This is where "Charlie Brown" originated-on the CBS Network in 1965,from the talented
team of Lee Mendelson and Bill Melendez! currently, these original cartoon specials are
reruned on ABC,,but back in their heyday, they were part of CBS's superior Primetime
structure, and it was a rewarding history! special mentions to two of its voice stars,Peter
Robbins and Pamelyn Ferdin, who ironicly worked together on CBS's short lived "BLONDIE" in Fall 1968,and the many children who also voiced these specials! then in Fall 1983,CBS brought "THE CHARLIE BROWN AND SNOOPY SHOW" to its Saturday morning line-up,which wasn't the same thing as the TV specials-plus the Theatrical movies,
that started with "A BOY NAMED CHARLIE BROWN" in 1969.and "SNOOPY,COME HOME" in 1972-a solid part of Charlie Brown's media history, during its Primetime run on CBS!
Oh, that's right! Thanks for reminding me! I think I first heard that they were father and son from you, William.
Ahhhh!!! This is when television really mattered!!! The good old days!!!
Merry Christmas 2020! 🎄🎄🎅🎅🎁🎁
Am I the only one who sees the irony of "Rhoda" getting pre-empted for this?
Why is this ironic?
She's Jewish.
Ah! Yes, that is ironic!
Attmay yes
I was just at Wal-Mart this morning, there are still tons of other brands of snack cakes, even a rip-off of "Twinkies", so there are still lots of varieties...
@Derek Gendvil: I think Bob Hite went to Philly for a time; you'll see a clip of him from January 1977 when he was with WPVI Channel 6 and their *Action News* team.
SuperPat88 Bob Hite? I remember him from the late 1980's in Tampa on WXFL/WFLA Channel 8. Wow!!!
We were all like, "Yeah..... fu---Rhoda. Charlie Brown is on".
@TheSpritz0 Twinkies are still being sold in Canada. They're made by a different company seperate from Hostess, though I doubt most Americans would want to take that journey to Canada just to get their hands on some Twinkies.
Maybe it's my mind playing tricks on me, but didn't Snoopy used to howl at the end of the special? Or was that on the read-along book and record?
Darn i thought they were gonna shoot to i.d. after the ending credits lol
Well at least we have youtube. We can view this video anytime all year.😅😃
A Charlie brown Christmas 1965
Back when Coke only meant Coke a Cola lol
3:56 Perry Cómo Christmas in Mexico... He would have been labeled a traitor nowadays.
@Bill Post(opener): I don't remember his specials on CBS, but I do remember when he had his specials on ABC in the 1980s; I remember his 1983(?) special in NYC, where he went to Studio 54 to reminisce when he had his shows years before, and they played his 1960s performance of "Catch a Falling Star, etc."
Rhoda was seen on the MTM show
@Derek Gendvil I think that was a different Bob Hite
Was Bob Hite working at WFLA after he did voiceover work for CBS?
... RIP CBS Special Presentation Bumper (1975-1998). ...AKA to Children: OH SHIT, CHARLIE BROWN FIXIN' TO COME ON!!! 🕗🕗🕗📺📺📺🏃🏃♀️🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♀️🏃
When I think of "Hostess" and Canada, I think of their various flavo(u)rs of potato chips. My flavorite... tomato ketchup.
The station ID V/O sounds like Ed Roberts.
Ketchup is also my "flavorite" non-American flavor of potato chip!
BTW I'm from California.
Now, would any expert on network staff announcers advise as to who V/O'd the "Rhoda" preemption notice? I have burned in my head what the golden voices of such names (at CBS New York and WCBS-TV/AM/FM) as the aforementioned Mr. Hite (Sr.), Bill Gilliand, Gaylord Avery, Hal Simms, Wally King, Norm Stevens, Pat Connell, Roger Forster, Lee Jordan, Alan Berns, Dave Campbell, Don Robertson, Stuart Metz, and Bill Martin (to say nothing of former "Edge of Night" and "CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite" announcer Harry Kramer), sounded like. The only name whose voice I can't place at this point is John Schaeffer (alt. spelling Shafer) - can anyone in the know advise whether that "Rhoda" preemption V/O is him or not?
CBS had a great core of on air talent at that time as well such as Walter Cronkite, Brent Musberger, Don Criqui, Pat Summerall and Vin Scully.
It's a bit depressing to see this now and know that "Linus" is dead & "Charlie Brown" is serving a prison sentence.
@Jon H(open): What an eerie twist indeed...
2:28 Well at least it's something
0:05 Kermit The Frog From Muppets: No Rhoda because of the Charlie Brown Christmas tradition?! YES! Thank god! I hate Rhoda!
Because of the following special program, Rhoda will not be presented this evening.
