My God shot was in Ezra 8:21-23 when Ezra and the exiles chose to trust in the protection of the Lord from the dangers of traveling rather than ask the king for help. And he was right to do so because the Lord listened to their entreaty and kept them safe from harm.

What stands out to me is the repeated phrase "the hand of the Lord" was on or with Ezra and the Israelites. God protected them. The commentary on God's providence from Ezra 8:31 in my Bible says this phrase is repeated six times. "This theme reminds us to trust in God's protecting care throughout our lives."

My Godshot for today aligned with today’s verse of the day. Ezra 10 was my Godshot. Listing the tons of people who sinned against God, to me, this is a reflection of how all of us are imperfect and our sinners, however, this also goes to show how truly loving and compassionate our God is as while we are all sinners, he forgives us all. God bless today!
Verse of the day: “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.”
    ‭‭Romans‬ ‭3‬:‭23‬-‭24‬ ‭NLT‬‬

I’m struck by the heartfelt repentance of Ezra, his reverence for God, and his turning to Him for guidance.

My God shot was how faithful Ezra was even in the midst of all the chaos and what they where facing. He wanted them to turn to God and turn away from sin. God is where the joy is.

I think of current times how people marry unequally yoke but yet the Word encourages no divorce but the saved mate may win over the unsaved. This happened in my marriage.

Impurity is always a temptation. We, like Israel, want to be like the nations around us rather than being a holy people set apart for God. For salt to be effective, it must be sprinkled in the food, but it must retain its unique flavor and quality. We are the salt. If we begin to lose our saltiness, what good will we do in making the world taste good, in fighting corruption, and in giving those around us a thirst for Living Water! Let us remain Holy- a people set apart to serve the Lord. Let us,like Ezra, set our hearts to learn, follow, and teach God's Word everywhere we go. If we do that, His hand will be with us.

Thank you Tara-Leigh for clarifying the relationship between the leaders and foreign wives - The real problem. As a product of interracial marriage 💞, this concept is always been thrown at me that throughout my life, that I could only date “my kind” - Really my brother? I see the knee-jerk reaction - Judah & Israel went into captivity due to them turning away from GOD and/or mixing idolatry into their lives. My GOD Shot came in Ezra 10:15 - 17. It looks like those who opposed the assembly were like saying - we need to look at this better, we need to investigate. If your foreign wives have not converted, then you need to send her and her children away. We know that GOD did not oppose foreign wives because as we look at Jesus’ lineage we have Rahab of Jericho and Ruth of Moab. These women were believers and worshippers of YHWH.
How often do we put words into GOD’s mouth. We tell people to do things thinking it is GOD’s will but never ask HIM what He wants us to do.

Exactly. My interracial marriage in America wasn’t considered lawful until the 1970’s. The USA law. Enacted because of bias not truth. I am a believer, an American with Mexican ancient Native American roots; my husband, an unbeliever, of European heritage. I shouldn’t have been married to him for his unbelief. As a believer I now understand scripture because of bible study. I am blessed that his unbelief didn’t pull me away but instead solidified my faith in Him, the One True God of the Bible. It is my belief in my Savior that makes our marriage holy. Praise Him for His sacrifice.
“For the unbelieving husband is made holy because of his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy because of her husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.”

"O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift my face to you, my God, for our iniquities have risen higher than our heads, and our guilt has mounted up to the heavens" (Ezra 9:6 ESV).
"For we are slaves. Yet our God has not forsaken us in our slavery, but has extended to us his steadfast love before the kings of Persia, to grant us some reviving to set up the house of our God, to repair its ruins, and to give us protection in Judea and Jerusalem" (Ezra 9:9 ESV).
We are sinners, and our sin should make us blush and lead to repentance. But, God is faithful in His steadfast love to bring a remnant to Himself. Praise His holy name!
God indeed has extended us hope through Jesus Christ. Amen!

I trust Ezra in the putting away of foreign (unbelieving) wives. He was "a scribe skilled in the Law of Moses." He fasted, prayed and confessed this sin to God. Also, he didn't make this decision alone but there were numerous counselors (10:2-4). I think the results of tolerating this sin would have been so much worse than dealing with it as they did.

It is a drastic measure to split up those families. But I try to remind myself of how disgusting and evil the worship of those false gods could be. And yet, the personal misery and sorrow mars the exiles return. It is a complicated situation requiring discernment and insight into men’s and women’s hearts that only God could provide.

Sin has consequences. Chapter 9 weighs heavy on my heart. Yet its true, we sin at our loss. (I recall a time when I permitted myself to buy just one of ... until the day I took a sharp look around my home, finding as much [pagan] waste, even more than of my God. It seemed wasteful to other's for me to fill outside trashcans in getting it out of my house, but no other way was as freeing. To have allowed just one thing to remain [or polute another with it] would've opened the door for greater sin. It was a hard humbling and shamefully huge loss, that ultimately grew me, greatly.) My empathetic heart hurts for all that faced the weight of sin, then and now.

Today we see a young priest Ezra, around 22 years old, grieve over the sins of the people.
We see in his zeal for God he makes some bold but bad decisions before asking God about them.
Like going to Jerusalem without body guards. Also having the people divorce their pagan spouses and send them and the children away.
These things done in zeal, are over correction of sorts, in his zeal for God.
Ezra doesn’t want God to wipe them out after they are back In Jerusalem.
Ezra’s zeal and service for God are honorable. But it’s Ezra’s view of God that is causing the problem.
Their hope is not in getting things right but in in the incredible love and grace of God. Yes yes God wants obedience. But God wants a willing heart that loves Him and not just serves Him.
    God offers forgiveness and hope.
Hope is a person not a wish.
    Hope is our God!
“Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from him a safe journey for ourselves, our children, and all our goods. For I was ashamed to ask the king for a band of soldiers and horsemen to protect us against the enemy on our way, since we had told the king, “The hand of our God is for good on all who seek him, and the power of his wrath is against all who forsake him.””
    ‭‭Ezra‬ ‭8‬:‭21‬-‭22‬

Making a covenant to put away their foreign wives and children may have been a harsh measure but, quite frankly, it seems to have worked. Correct me if I'm wrong, but while idolatry had long been a major problem with the ancient Israelites, we don't see them having the problem of worshiping foreign deities anymore after this. 🤔

It’s amazing how secular historians have entirely dismissed this book to the point of almost erasing it.
They will confirm King Ahasueris, even explaining that the name (Ahasueris) is an actual “title”?
However, when researching Esther and Vashti within well respected academic resources, their very existence is heavily refuted.
    Talk about disappointing!
Today’s commentary on Ezra really restored my hope and conviction that Esther narrative was a legitimate telling.

1 Corinthians 7:14 (ESV) says: For the unbelieving husband is made holy because of his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy because of her husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.
Knowing God does not lie, suggests to me that indeed Ezra did not consult God on this matter. Perhaps fear spoke louder than faith and love for him in this matter.

I feel ya.. that would be so hard😢 it makes me sad to think of it. But it reminds me that there are harsh consequences to our sin that we, in reality bring upon ourselves when we go against the commands of God. He calls us to repent of sin. In this case the act of this particular sin was very costly to so many. The pagans they were married to didn’t have the commands of the True God. Gods people were chose to ignore His command to not intermarry. This command was in place to protect them from turning to idols and foreign gods. It amazes me that God still wants us close to Him and will draw us back to Himself when we’re in sin.. He doesn’t throw His children away.. He calls us to turn/repent and come back.❤️
