  • Running a slinky continuously down a treadmill.
    I was too sick to go diving last weekend. So when I saw this video • Slinky On Treadmill 1a I thought to myself, heck I bet I could beat 22 seconds if I tried. So I set up my own treadmill and gave it a shot. Totally made a world record XD

      You're not wrong, that's how you live. You have to keep moving. You don't have to physically move, but internally you are moving. If you stop moving and fall off the treadmill, you are dead. Kurzgesagt made a video about this, check it out.

      I leave Slinky at the foot of the treadmill! One always finds one's burdens again. But slinky teaches the higher fidelity that negates gods and raises coils. He, too, concludes that all is well. This universe henceforth without a master, seems to him neither sterile nor futile; each atom of that treadmill, each brittle leaf of that bush-filled ground, in and of itself forms a world. It's enough to fill a man's heart.

    My heart skipped a beat when the slinky almost fell off of the back of the treadmill, but his determination to keep going forward is surely an inspiration to us all. Much like Sisyphus, the slinky will keep trying to get his boulder, which we can interpret as life itself, to the end of the treadmill, only to fail every time he gets closer to the end.
    Never have the travails of existence better been portrayed by a 50 cent toy.

    You know this video really has it all. As it began I found myself laughing uncontrollably at our hero's whimsical adventure. But as the video went on, I found myself endeared to our metallic friend and his exploits along the treadmill of life. Soon I was screaming "No Slinky! NO!" as he slowly came closer and closer to the end of the road, thinking that all was lost. I even shed a manly tear as he fumbled to regain his footing towards the end. Truly, nothing on the internet can match the beauty.

    • @Lightspectre1
      @Lightspectre1 9 років тому +5

      It's more than that, I think. Sure, it is energy efficient, but did you notice how the slinky was moving up and down the treadmill? That means the slinky's relative speed must have been changing (assuming the treadmill was going at a constant speed). If it was merely super energy efficient, then I'd expect it to slowly slide back on the treadmill or at least stay at a fixed location. But if it moves up, it's got to be getting energy from somewhere - presumably the treadmill itself somehow. I can't guess what. Maybe the treadmill is on a slight downhill slope and it's location on the treadmill is some sort of chaotic attractor? (sorry, physicist here... strongly tempted to reproduce this in my lab)

    • @IMortage

      IMortage Well, of course, gravity is pretty consistent after all.

    • @briantran4206
      @briantran4206 9 років тому +1

      Lightspectre1 its the angle that the slinky makes its next flip that makes it moves up or down the treadmill.

  • @krashd
    @krashd 10 місяців тому +4

    For anyone wondering why it keeps going, it is gravity. One end of the treadmill is higher than the other, when Slinkys climb down stairs it is because one end of the slinky is lower than the other so the pull of gravity on one end outweighs the ability to 'stay put' of the other end, and theoretically it could go on forever, just like water or any other thing running down hill, gravity does all of the work - hence the scene in Ace Ventura 2 where Ace uses a slinky on a mile-high set of stairs.
    It's the same effect used when syphoning fuel from a vehicle, if the destination can/bucket/receptacle is below the fuel tank then gravity will cause the fuel to keep flowing into the receptacle until there's no fuel left in the tank. Basically one side has a stronger pull than the the other side's ability to resist that pull - it's just a state of falling. The slinky is "falling" down the treadmill and will do so until something stops it.

    I am so inspired right now. The combination of the music in the background and the determination of no quit in the slinky is truly motivationally epic.

    There's something to say about existence when you have watched a slinky battle through a treadmill for 3 minutes... I think we can all agree, "GO SLINKY GO!!! SLINKY SLINKY EVERYONE LOVES A SLINKY!!!"

    I was SWEATING while watching, I thought at any moment the sliky could fall, every time he got close the the end of the belt my whole body tensed... but the slinky never stopped. I think this teaches us a valuable lesson

    This was a really moving pice of work right here! I sat here in my chair with FULLSCREEN view. My HD Surround Sound Headphones on (Bose Subwoofer) and I cried like a baby. I sat here and teared up. Realizing tht everytime that Slinky went to the edge of the Treadmill he struggled. Then he jumped back on track. Kindof like our lives. We may not make the best decision in the world but eventually like the slinky "We" will get back on track!
    I am so sorry you just read that, I am in my speech writing mode and It just came over me. PLus Im stoned.

    Aren't we all just slinky's on a treadmill? Slinking our way through life. Sure, sometimes we go off course and ride the edge of life a little too close ... but it's during those close calls and our ability to slink back from them that define us. So, I say to all of you... slink on, my friends... slink on.
