Why America must pivot from Ukraine to Taiwan - former Trump adviser Elbridge Colby | SpectatorTV

  • The war in Ukraine is only bogging America down, says Elbridge Colby, a former national security adviser to the Trump administration. On this episode of Americano, Colby tells host Freddy Gray why the US should - and likely will - reduce its support to Ukraine and Europe, to focus on the increasing threat China poses over Taiwan. Europe, he says, can pick up the slack on its own continent. Colby has been tipped to become Trump's national security adviser should he win in November this year.

.Why does US has to assert its dominance in the SCS , miles away from their own shores. Yes there’s conflicting claims not only by China, Phillipines, Vietnam, Brunei and Malaysia. For decades the conflict have been managed by countries in that region.80% of China’s trades go through this region and it’s in their interest to safeguard the region. By labelling China an aggressor is outrageous when US has its military bases from Phillipines,Pine Gap and Darwin in Australia, the seventh fleet in the straits of Taiwan, Jeju island in S. Korea and Okinawa, forming a noose around China. Now figure out for yourself who the aggressor is and who is the defenders of peace in south east Asia. Furthermore US is not a member of UNCLOS and in what capacity is it acting on.
US please pivot your policy in creating a better nation for your citizens by focusing more on investing in health, educations, infrastructures and welfares of your people rather than spending billions on military expenditures overseas. It makes more sense to your lovely people. The Chinese word for America is “Mei Guo” , a beautiful country and China has much respect for your nation but not the people controlling the White House.

On top of that no matter who we vote for, our policies are all dictated by Washington. We are no longer sovereign. What do we get in return? Not a lot. Europe is the same. Always remember what Kissinger said, ‘To be an enemy of America is dangerous but to be its friend is fatal’. We are killing our economy because of our alignment with Europe and America.
      2. The West is in massive decline. We all know that. The East is riding and the West is declining. I’d rather be Sovereign and work with anyone else but the other members if the West. BRICS will grow 186% between now and 2040, the G7 50%.

Peace through strength only works through real strength and willing to use it.
This gentleman is a sheep in wolves clothing and naively expects the Chinese to fall for his bluff.
If the US president is not even willing to allow Ukrainians to hit the bases inside Russia from where Russians launch attacks on Ukraine, because of fear of Russian retaliation, then the Chinese will call “peace through strength” as a bluff and gamble on the US staying passive.
Why is Taiwan - an island of 24 million people - more important to the US strategic interests than Europe?
TSMC produces a lot of semiconductors, but the machines producing them are from European ASML.
Europeans sent soldiers to war with the US after 9/11 and some countries - including the UK - suffered equal per capita casualties as the US.
Both US and Europe needs to increase its industrial base, but they are both dependent on each other for vital technology.
How are the US supposed to rival China both financially, technically and militarily without Europe?
Trump will have other old allies - like chairman of ISW general Jack Keane & former secretary of state Mike Pompeo - advising him and I’m not sure this gentleman will win the discussions with them.

Lots of claims that are simply untrue. A few of my favorites...
      * "If the US president is not even willing to allow Ukrainians to hit the bases inside Russia ... " But the POTUS does allow Ukraine to hit bases inside Russia with some restrictions to prevent escalation.
      * "Why is Taiwan - an island of 24 million people - more important to the US strategic interests than Europe?" It isn't. But why do Europeans think that the US should do all or most of the heavy lifting on a European issue. Take responsibility for yourselves.
      * "... some countries - including the UK - suffered equal per capita casualties as the US." Simply not true unless you cherry pick data and massage the statistics. But perhaps you could visit the vast US cemeteries in Europe for some perspective on who rescues whom.
      * "How are the US supposed to rival China both financially, technically and militarily without Europe?" Easily. BTW, the US is a singular noun since 1865. The US IS, not the US ARE.

Abandoning Ukraine and defending the sovereignty of Taiwan are mutually exclusive. With failure to defend democracy in Afghanistan and Ukraine, Taiwan and the entirety of South East Asia would rightly see the US as insincere and move into the orbit of China.

Two very different things for one, the US and most of the world don't see Taiwan as a sovereign country. Again the issues with China/Taiwan are they are locked in a civil war, but we don't want to see China use force used in reunification. While Ukraine and Russia were the same country for hundreds of years, Ukraine is however a sovereign country. Afghanistan never had a democracy, anyone who even surface knowledge knows we were propping up a bunch of warlords with some sham elections in the insane hope that a democracy would emerge.

I have personally been asked to join by random recruiters catching me running errands 5 times in the past year. Times have changed. Ukraine is a conflict where the only significance is the U.S.' reputation. Taiwan has much much more real strategic value. With it's position in the pacific ocean, semiconductors, and the implications for South Korea and Japan.
