How technology is used matters, not technology. A knife is technology. You can use it to cut vegetables for dinner or you can use it to stab someone. The technology is innocent.
It’s application in movies/shows is positive as well as allowing people to portray their younger selves if they want to. Legislation should be created against malicious use of the technology
Yeah, basically anyone can create video counterfeits of anyone doing anything. Anyone could be targeted. But it gets more disturbing. Anyone could claim plausible deniability. Expect lies and scams and scandals and broken promises and murder evidence caught on inconvenient video to somehow be discredited as counterfeits as often as not, regardless of actual guilt vs innocence.
People will get people in trouble with this, people will be made guilty of things that they are not, and there will be people who will make up cheating scandals with this and blackmail people. It is terrible.

Thing is, when creating this kind of technology we should also have a countermeasure for it. To protect us once it goes beyond the control.
The way this technology is created, you already have a countermeasure. To train a deepfake AI you create two AI's. You train one with the goal of generating deepfakes which the other cannot detect and the other to detect the deepfakes generated by the former. The better one gets, so does the other. but if one is lacking, the other doesn't improve.
