The sword you've been talking about requires a specific boss to be defeated, but in classic Terraria style the boss and weapon have nothing to do with each other. There's a boss you need to find to essentially activate the "second half" of the game. Which I'm surprised you didn't find by just digging down. I wouldn't want to spoil anything but just to help you not make an easy mistake you literally need to dig to Hell to get a lot of good items and general game content. Terraria is one of those games that literally doesn't explain anything to you at all. Sometimes it's to the point of being unfair. Also the character classes like weapon type and stuff doesn't really matter until said "second half" of the game is activated. Also the majority of poweful weapons require you getting some of the npcs so it's impossible to play the game fully without ever caring about them.
