UT2004 has the most replay-ability.. One of the best games, so much content for the price. (The original price, which is something games nowadays don't have.)
9:30 "UT 2004 only uses one disk" Don't be ridiculous. I got the Editor's Choice edition (still have the original packaging and everything), and it came with TEN disks. At least three of the CDs were for the included mods, but holy shit, that must have been one of the last few print runs before all physical games switched to DVDs for data storage.
Indeed, the first PC game I had personally seen on DVD was Star Wars Galaxies in 2003. I had to borrow someone's DVD drive to install it. 2004-2005 was definitely the last stretch of big titles being sold on CD-Rom.
You said this game came on 1 disk compared to UT2003's 3 disks...... you failed to mention that 1 disk was a DVD...... 6 CD's worth. I have the 6 cd version and installing it is a pain in the arse with all the disk swapping I can tell you.
exactly what i thought of it , though this game still is very dear to my heart & i think Narrator is wrong here for underrating this game & denying it for one of the best games ever. Its definitely up there.
Still own both the CD version and DVD version. One day I was at Best Buy and saw the DVD version on sale and was like, it will be worth it 😊 Just like the original Far Cry. It was 6 or so CDs.
Fun fact: The models of the monsters in Invasion mode are models from Unreal gold, but with a few tweaks of the models here and there which makes the models look better.
Great video. I do still believe it's one of the best games ever. No doubt about it, me and my mates were all hooked on this like some insane new drug. Even the music was epic, I extracted the audio files and burnt a CD to listen in the car. Such epicness :)
This is what the game review cottage industry needs - more thoroughness, time to play and study individual games and/or franchises such that the reviewer has time to develop more than a surface knowledge of the game; this way you get thoughtfulness, depth and breadth of history, along with anecdotes, sincere opinion, and .... long-form reviews that are cohesive at the same time, and don't necessarily ramble on into let's play territory. I have no doubt that if you keep going with this kind of content, you'll eventually find yourself at keeping pace with the most advanced reviewers in the community.
UT2k4 used to be just a big content update for 2k3, but realized it had gotten way too big for a mere patch, so they just made it into a new game and sold it seperately. Fair enough, 2k4 was not perfect by any means, but I've had so much ridiculous fun, I wish I still had my copy now.
Just like UT99 was a big content update to the original Unreal. The "Botmatch pack" was eventually turned into a stand-alone release. It's kinda funny history repeated itself.
He was talking about the DVD version I guess. I picked up a copy last year because I missed playing it and forgot the difference, so I got the CD-ROM version with the 5 install discs. Forehead smack for sure.
უწმინდური მამაო ღორმენ I played and loved this game on PC. It contained so much but I personally played one map and one game mode over and over, Face Classic CTF!!! The teleport was and is still a part of the game no other FPS has, and an alternative fire for every weapon, especially the shock rifle…… memories. I got to get this game back.
I played between 2005 and 2008 day in day out UT2004 and was in European clan that was basically CTF and TAM , those days we died in 2008 , i loved to play with 3 weapons al the time LG , shock and spam rockets , LG was my weapon.
Quite honestly UT99 had much more fun and faster gameplay then this, especially its weapons felt like had more size and power to them. And death sounds with chunks were rather satisfying. UT2004 character animation looked like running scisors, LOL.
9:40 I have UT2004 in 6 Cd's. I could get DVD version but as I lacked a DVD drive at the time I went with the cd package. Oh and UT2004 being one of the best game ever is more of a *fact* than an opinion.
Brilliant games. I've played Unreal 1 and Unreal 2003 when I was younger, but never actually owned the games. Pre-watching the video I found both UT99 and UT2004 for dirt cheap at a game shop and instantly bought them. 2004 was fun but 99... oh man that game is such a friken blast!
this was the greatest TDM PC game ever made and i will guess i spent 2000 hours+ playing this. I didn't have private internet access as a child and from 2004-2007 this was my introduction because i could set up 32 player matches and the npc had smart AI so i felt like it was real. then in December 2007 i got an xbox 360 with internet but i still wasn't allowed pc internet. when i finally got internet i ditched the console and fell inlove with the 100s of creative maps online for this game until Unreal Tournament 3 which held up the title with next gen graphics.
This is by far one of it not the best pure action oriented FPS games ever developed, & yes while most of UT 2003's content was straight over copied, beneath the skin there was much rework present, this rework was so extensive that its graphically equivalent predecessor UT 2003's major community developed mods were rendered incompatible. In addition games like UT2004 that come with out of the box native bot support demonstrate why these games are clearly superior since this game a decade later can still be enjoyed in its full glory. This game was also so utterly jammed with content both in terms of what it offered and it's hidden features that it makes its successor UT3 looks like a shareware title. P.S: The ECE version is 10 discs :P
Fun fact: UT2004 actually came in two editions (well, not counting Standard/Limited): The 1-Disc DVD version you mention, or a CD-based edition that was a whopping six CDs. If I remember right, the Limited Edition could only be obtained as a DVD version. The last time I remember a game with that many discs was the PS1 version of Riven, which used 5 CDs. And of course, most people remember Final Fantasy 8/9 were four-disc games as well.
oMG I miss this game so much.. :( invasion, freon, onslaught and team arena master were among my favorites...luckily I have ut4 ! to hold me over..but it's not the same..hopefully it sees a full release someday!
Of course the content from ut 2003 is copied to 2004. They planned to publish an update every year. Like ut 2005, 2006, 2007...So ut 2004 is like a big update of 2003. then they dropped the idea of updating every year and released ut 3 instead, which is a disaster. Ut 3 is not ut anymore, it's like Quake. Everything is chunky, heavy and dumbed down. I hope they get back to the roots.
It is at least one of the best competitive games ever ;) 1on1, 2on2 and 4on4 tdm were as popular as quake3 and most of the competitive player never even touched onslaught or the other "casual" gamemodes :p
That Unreal Tournament 2004 discount promotion confused the shit out of me and I ended up looking on Wikipedia to figure out why. I guess it wasn't clear to me from the video but it was basically a discount for gamers who bought UT 2003, like a proof of purchase. However Wikipedia says a scan of the 2003 manual was required in the U.S. and returning the game disc in Europe. In the MC's defense on the subject of the CD vs DVD release, Wikipedia states that a limited edition two disc DVD version was released in the U.S. with a Logitech headset or a 6 disc CD version without the headset but in Europe, it was a single DVD release, so there's that.
A friend of mine got me his copy of UT 2003 to try at home and sense i didn't have internet i couldn't play online all i did was kill bots for hours at a time, keep in mind i had never heard of the unreal games and UT 2003 was my 1º experience with them, i had many hours of fun, despite not knowing that there was a UT 2004. Years later i find that a new UT is being made UT 2007 was the code name for it i think, and its now known as UT 3. i brought it at release and was disappointed.
This was the only game that could keep me away from wow, and the community really made it awesome. Then epic had to shoot themselves in the foot with UT3. I remember when UT3 was released and pretty much every clan and player ditched the franchise completely and left for CS or other FPS. Then it went into zombie mode with shit ideas like TAM. But 04-07 was good times.
True Review Another entertaining video in the series, one that I was very familiar with. UT 2004 was basically an expansion pack for 2003, and to be fair, it isn't as good as the original and did have major problems. Several of the deathmatch maps were too similar in design, especially those based on the industrial theme, the assault mode wasn't very good, and some of the gaming modes were too similar. You'll understand the points I've made. Good work.
i grew up with ut99 and i think 2004 is miles better i loved ut99, but 2004 has a lot more strategy and skill to it it really is a "more than meets the eye" compared to ut99 and it took me a few months of playing ut2004 to realize that
I never was a big UT2004 fan, preferring classic UT and the original Unreal all this time. There were several reasons like the art style, weird characters, not that good music, lack of my favourite weapon for popping heads (call me a ripper-noob, I dare ya), etc. But some day I bought Unreal Anthology at a bargain price and installed 2004. And it is one hell of a intense game, even more than UT99 I'd say, even if there's no Ripper (thankfully other guns were enhanced - I LOVE 2004's minigun). If it weren't for things I mentioned earlier, this would have been the perfect Tournament. As of music - it's not horrible, but it's generic - heck knows why Epic didn't hire Alexander Brandon and Michiel Van Den Bos for third time to score the soundtrack. But then there's built-in custom music player under F11 key, and a lot of quality remakes of classic tracks out on UA-cam or Soundcloud. Hearing improved songs of the past during UT2004 matches is a blast, I'm telling you.
Agree, 2k4 (and 2k3 to even more extend) had poor character and map designs. Maps were too big, characters had huge hitboxes, easy to hit and they were slow to move. It was quite substantial change comparing to ut99. That's why many people hated 2k3/2k4. In 2k4 they tried to fix some things. They changed rag dolls used in 2k3, improved jumps and did some minor fixes to physics, but it was not enough. Knowing how game was developed from inside, I can explain why it all happened. When original UT99 was a joint effort by Epic and DE and CliffyB spent 100% of his on the game babysitting DE people, content of 2k3 and 2k4 was mostly developed by DE alone. Character designs were done by person who NEVER played UT in the first place. Who could it possibly happen!?
Its certainly a thing of personal preference if UT2K4 is the best game ever, but it is a nicely polished well made game with opulent content. No wonder tons of mods and maps were made for it that turns the game into a real great one. Weirdly enough the developers didnt build on the success of UT2K4 in UT3. It seems they learned nothing.
haven't watched this yet, but I'm loving this UT series... do you go as far as to get into the community UT4 project? if not, and you're knowledgeable, I hope you do some videos on it. it's been in limbo a while, so could definitely use some attention else repeat history. I'll subscribe, and see if I find any UT4 videos. love these history community response to UT. hope you do other games, too!
I played this game when I was 10 years old... I've been hooked on FPS games since. The only game that I've found equally fun is Gunz. I hope Maiet will revive Gunz 2.
I have UT2004 on a whopping number of SIX discs. I won the game on a lottery in a gaming mag and as I did not have a DVD drive back then I went with this version. I might install it again sometime (when I have the patience to switch discs five times)
I think one thing that this game got wrong is game feel. Weapons sound like toys and some things like power nodes and cores don't react to damage at all.
I really hated this game. UT99 is one of my favorite games, one I could play any day. Everyone told me "UT1 is nothing compared to this!". So I played it and was like "Why did they change Deck?", "Why do we need a double jump?", "Why are the weapons to weak?", "Where is the ripper?". By now, I have to admit that it's a good game and that I love survival. Still I don't care for any multiplayer mode except for Deathmatch. Now UT4 is in Pre-Alpha and is (almost) the best of both worlds. :D
*NEW DOWNLOAD AVAILABLE!!* ONS-TicTacToe-LE [at UTzone] squares off 9 rooms and several dugouts, to bring the international cabal to life. 2 cores and 7 nodes that let players move swiftly and precisely against their opponents. many if not all gametype strategies are brought together in this Onslaught themed map. weapon staging allows play to build inventory naturally. no more searching for weapons, or not covering your flanks, enfilades, and rear. fight the cabal, by making your move. :0 ^^ -msi
Hope you don't slag this version off, else I'll be back in the comments lol This version I played just about every day for four years. Hated unreal 3 though. Especially the way they did away with double jump. Good players used double jump a lot. Unreal3 was very dumbed down unfortunately. I'm downloading unreal4, I just hope it's better than 3.
Not sure why they have downgraded the weapons sounds ? Listen to the Instagib from UT99 and UT2004 i much more love the UT99 sound , similar goes for all other weapons . In UT2003/4 they sound like toys peww peww . Kinda similar happen with Doom 2016/Eternal the weapons sounds are toys pew peww too compared to the Playstation/Nintendo 64 Doom port which for me are simply the best surely the double shotgun sound wooww!! The bots design i don't like in UT2003/4 they're fat ugly looking and some of them are WTF . Also why didn't they made iconic bots like in UT99 such as Tamerlane , Loque and Xan they were the real tread and challenge . Another mistake in UT2004 is that you cannot change the skills and difficulty from each bot like in UT99 . Also the bots are slow paced in UT2004 compared to UT99 they were more smooth and faster even the AI is better in UT99 . Not sure why the map DM_Hyperblast 2 in UT2004 is so big ? wtf were they on their minds it is ugly . Some maps are badly made and looks like they miss many things to have been great . They added many game modes but only two modes were mostly played back then is Capture the Flag and Death Match ( Last Man Standing ) .
Help keeping this game alive. there are still quite a few players active online, come to ceonss.net for info about a european onslaught server, awesome no lag server
Or that. I was more or less referring to the demo servers still being active regardless of whether it's on Steam or not. But it is nice to hear it's readily available.
The both championship games gets covered in the next video in the series entitled 'Unreal on the console'. Given the name of this video, this one's is purely about UT2004.

UT 2004 will always have a special place in my heart.
Still playing!
It's my favorite FPS ever, and I have a hard time imagining anything topping it.
I bet if a CoD diehard came and saw this, they'd be complaining so badly. Lol
ShoKSource But have you seen the new killstreak rewards? You basically become God of the server and you can ban anyone anytime you'd like!! :s
I played UT 2004 from 2005 to 2008 , it was the most awesome FPS experience ever for me and i played a lot FPS games.
Just one thing....
UT2k4 was on a DVD, rather than CD's as 2k3. Comparing the number of discs seems to be unfair as UT2k4 actually was bigger....
UT2004 has the most replay-ability.. One of the best games, so much content for the price. (The original price, which is something games nowadays don't have.)
9:30 "UT 2004 only uses one disk"
Don't be ridiculous. I got the Editor's Choice edition (still have the original packaging and everything), and it came with TEN disks. At least three of the CDs were for the included mods, but holy shit, that must have been one of the last few print runs before all physical games switched to DVDs for data storage.
+Thalanox I got the regular version... I had four... one went bad. I cried... Good thing I still have the CD key.
Its true i did only use one disk to install unreal tournament 2004 but yet again i play the game with unreal anthology
I have UT2k4 still with5 disks i can only not play it anymore on windows 10
Indeed, the first PC game I had personally seen on DVD was Star Wars Galaxies in 2003. I had to borrow someone's DVD drive to install it. 2004-2005 was definitely the last stretch of big titles being sold on CD-Rom.
BEST GAME EVER!!!!!
other than half-life
i said best game ever not best arena game...
Nah, that’s Unreal Gold ;^)
You said this game came on 1 disk compared to UT2003's 3 disks...... you failed to mention that 1 disk was a DVD...... 6 CD's worth. I have the 6 cd version and installing it is a pain in the arse with all the disk swapping I can tell you.
exactly what i thought of it , though this game still is very dear to my heart & i think Narrator is wrong here for underrating this game & denying it for one of the best games ever. Its definitely up there.
Yep, I had the CD version too. Just brutal....
wow yeah i was just about to comment the same 6 years later - thanks for bringing that up
Still own both the CD version and DVD version. One day I was at Best Buy and saw the DVD version on sale and was like, it will be worth it 😊 Just like the original Far Cry. It was 6 or so CDs.
Fun fact: The models of the monsters in Invasion mode are models from Unreal gold, but with a few tweaks of the models here and there which makes the models look better.

you might like hotline miami's soundtrack
UT 2003 came on 3 CDs UT 2004 on a DVD. It´s actualy bigger
+Caius Licinius I'm glad someone pointed this out, I also had it on 5 CDs, only game I ever owned on so many discs lol.
+Caius Licinius i still have 4 CDs UT2004 :)
Still playing ut2004 today
I stopped in 2008 still have the awesome memories in my heart.
Still playing :P
I still play UT99 and 04. best FPSs ever made.
are servers still up?
yes. Still going strong :)

Reminds me of D2. When installing a game was a ritual.
Brings back great memories of modding. I was 11 then, now 18, I feel so old now
hands down best fps ever
უწმინდური მამაო ღორმენ I played and loved this game on PC. It contained so much but I personally played one map and one game mode over and over, Face Classic CTF!!! Sadly, I have UT2004 CD Version. 5 CDs for an install. Go DVD or go home
The best FPS experience I'll ever have, I'll never forget ut2k4!
Well shit..."one disc".....you definitely didn't play this during its hay day..
One of the greatest games ever made. I love unreal 99 but this one was just bigger and better in nearly every way.
R.I.P. Mandy Vang/Yim
loved unlocking the characters. man i miss this.
Quite honestly UT99 had much more fun and faster gameplay then this, especially its weapons felt like had more size and power to them. And death sounds with chunks were rather satisfying.

Oh and UT2004 being one of the best game ever is more of a *fact* than an opinion.
Installing UT 2004 and UT 1 as I'm watching this. Can't wait to play them again.
+Heroes & Champions
So, what do you think? :)

Good essay
The music and Onslaught mode really remind me of the multiplayer in Ratchet And Clank Up Your Arsenal, which was released in the same year
Your reviews of this series makes me scratch my head. I really don’t know if you truly appreciate the greatness of this franchise.
Fun fact: UT2004 actually came in two editions (well, not counting Standard/Limited): The 1-Disc DVD version you mention, or a CD-based edition that was a whopping six CDs. If I remember right, the Limited Edition could only be obtained as a DVD version.

Unreal Tournament 2015!
UT 2004 also had a game mode called VCTF which I played for thousands of hours. It's basically CTF but with vehicles.
oMG I miss this game so much..
:( invasion, freon, onslaught and team arena master were among my favorites...luckily I have ut4 ! to hold me over..but it's not the same..hopefully it sees a full release someday!
Onslaught was an amazing mode, it was like warhammer 40k dawn of war for me, was super fun.
Great video!
ONE QUESTION! What is your intro music?! I've been trying to search for this everywhere and I can't find it! Thanks!
Chemical Brothers - Galvanize. Glad you liked the video.

Ah, now I see. You did UT2003 and 2004 separately.
At the time I always thought of UT2003 as sort of a demo and 2004 as the real deal.
Best game ever!!! I was Dad Gone Mad way back then. Still have it and may play it again soon after seeing this video :)
It is at least one of the best competitive games ever ;)

Oh, they are. Dope.
Hobomedic1 There's UT3 and they're making another, search "New UT free" and you can download the alpha from free directly from Epic :)
The player models in ut2003 for robots was very nice. I missed those in ut2004. I think i prefered 2003, i never wanted any vehicles anyway.
I never was a big UT2004 fan, preferring classic UT and the original Unreal all this time.
Its certainly a thing of personal preference if UT2K4 is the best game ever, but it is a nicely polished well made game
with opulent content. No wonder tons of mods and maps were made for it that turns the game into a real great one.
Weirdly enough the developers didnt build on the success of UT2K4 in UT3. It seems they learned nothing.
2019. Still my First choice in FPS games.
haven't watched this yet, but I'm loving this UT series... do you go as far as to get into the community UT4 project? if not, and you're knowledgeable, I hope you do some videos on it. it's been in limbo a while, so could definitely use some attention else repeat history. I'll subscribe, and see if I find any UT4 videos. love these history community response to UT. hope you do other games, too!
Question: What song was playing at 7:27?
I played this game when I was 10 years old... I've been hooked on FPS games since. The only game that I've found equally fun is Gunz. I hope Maiet will revive Gunz 2.
i agree this is not the best game of all time, but in its category it is one of the top contenders. You have to consider games of its time ONLY.
no mention on it's OST?
best game ever.
Still my favorite game ever
Wow! Has it really been ten years?!?
yes and landing a redeemer still feels as good as ever
How about 22 years since QuakeWorld release and 20 years since UT99, kiddo? :D
modding was limited in 2k3? are you kidding me? the number of custom weapons, maps, and other shit was probably triple that of 2k4.
his talking about base mutators
What are you smoking? UT2k4 had x10 more mods, models, maps and everything else. 2k3 was never as popular in modding community as 2k4.
"Only has one disk"... Yeah, a 4GB DVD instead of 3 700MB CDs.
This went perfect with my p4/fx5900 machine (destroyed in freak lightning storm :/)
I have UT2004 on a whopping number of SIX discs.
I won the game on a lottery in a gaming mag and as I did not have a DVD drive back then I went with this version. I might install it again sometime (when I have the patience to switch discs five times)
that makes you sound really lazy :p
While 2k4 was great, the problem I had with it is that Facing Worlds no longer played Foregone Destruction.
I think one thing that this game got wrong is game feel. Weapons sound like toys and some things like power nodes and cores don't react to damage at all.
Like the best first person shooter game ever. No story, all glory. Unless you suck.
nostalgia (for simpler times)
I really hated this game. UT99 is one of my favorite games, one I could play any day. Everyone told me "UT1 is nothing compared to this!". So I played it and was like "Why did they change Deck?", "Why do we need a double jump?", "Why are the weapons to weak?", "Where is the ripper?".
By now, I have to admit that it's a good game and that I love survival. Still I don't care for any multiplayer mode except for Deathmatch. Now UT4 is in Pre-Alpha and is (almost) the best of both worlds. :D
Lightning Gun > Sniper Rifle.... I'v completed both 99 and 2k4 NUMEROUS times on all difficulties.
true review the guy who can not even dodge evaluating ut2004 as a single player experience :DDD bizzare really xd
*NEW DOWNLOAD AVAILABLE!!*
ONS-TicTacToe-LE [at UTzone] squares off 9 rooms and several dugouts, to bring the international cabal to life. :0 ^^ -msi
Hope you don't slag this version off, else I'll be back in the comments lol
This version I played just about every day for four years. Hated unreal 3 though. Especially the way they did away with double jump. Good players used double jump a lot. Unreal3 was very dumbed down unfortunately. I'm downloading unreal4, I just hope it's better than 3.
Try turning the safety off
I still play this.
soon after i found that UT 2004 was a thing, and that it was better then UT 2003, F.M.L. Such is the life of the un-informed consumer.
This channel should be called "UT99 Fanboy."
That's an excellent review
Best fps for me right next to original halo/halo 2 bet even then UR2004 beats it out way hard.
I miss it....
my favorite is still ut99
They added many game modes but only two modes were mostly played back then is Capture the Flag and Death Match ( Last Man Standing ) .
hey that monster are look like the predator 8:09
sorry but it's painful to watch you play..
What ever happened to playing video games for fun? Every dickhead out there thinks they're a progamer. It's pathetic.
I agree maby gamers should try to take it easy for a while instead of thinking about becoming a pro
Yeah, it is clear that hes never played UT2004.
I have a copy of unreal tournament 2004 that has 6 cd's
boom headshot
Help keeping this game alive. there are still quite a few players active online, come to ceonss.net for info about a european onslaught server, awesome no lag server
ut99 was garbage compared to quake 3, and 2004 was the best ut ever made.
Yeah, right. You had to buy the game again to get team deathmatch. Quake 3 looked good but after 10 minutes, you had done everything there was to do.
download the demo come play! its still free!!
Colonel Angus Or buy it on steam ^^
Or that. I was more or less referring to the demo servers still being active regardless of whether it's on Steam or not. But it is nice to hear it's readily available.
Colonel Angus Steam don't remove "old" games ^^
Newb bots ftl?
6 discs
yeet
Again with you PC elitist. You never once mentioned Unreal Championship 1. Which was amazing and the foundation of 2003-2004.
The both championship games gets covered in the next video in the series entitled 'Unreal on the console'. Given the name of this video, this one's is purely about UT2004.
True Review Right. Excuse my ignorance
Unreal Championship was basically a console port of UT2003. UT is best on PC, period. UC2 was good though.
A decade later Epic gives 0 fs about the product that made them... now it’s all about greed and Fortnite oh wait I mean Greednite
ut3 blows
Lame review.
Look at the graphics for 2004
So many modes to play.
yayz 7000th sub.
1st and love the show :)
