    Tip: My daughter has one of those machines and it’s great but the choke is really sensitive and it can flood easy, so the best way to get it started quickly is lift the choke lever, then pull and if it sounds like it’s trying to start , turn the choke off and pull the string a couple more times and it should start immediately . Found out if you keep the choke on and keep pulling it will flood the machine. And that’s a great review by the way , thank you so much for showing us how it works !

    Just bought a new one of these edgers at Home Depot ($199). Started on the 2nd pull and runs great. Once warmed up, only takes 1 pull to start. The salesman @ HD recommended ethanol free gas, and that seems to have been a good decision. A primer bulb would be nice as well as an inline fuel cutoff valve. Thanks for the video!

    Powermate starting problem. i am 76 years old and can not pull several times. i have read all the other solutions to the hard to start. i found the "OCTANE BOOSTER" added to fuel was the best solution. if i don't use the POWERMATE for a couple weeks i pull the cord a few time to prime and then pull to start and it starts very well. "OCTANE BOOSTER" solves the staring problem. i sometime put a cap full in the tank and bang it starts powermate makes a great unit.

    4 cycle small engines frequently have automtic primers instead of the pump-the-ball primers that 2 cycle engines typically have. If this edger has automatic priming it sure doesn't work all that well. My fix for my edger was to insert a one-way primer bulb into the fuel line. You'll need a marine-type in-line primer bulb (about $10), and a short piece of fuel line since there isn't any excess in the area under the gas tank to play with. Also a couple of hose clamps. It took me about 30 minutes, and the setup works great. I toyed with the idea of fabbing up a fuel tank cap with primer bulb in it like those used in some Homelite chainsaws, but the marine in-line bulb seemed easier.

    Powermate fixed the problem with starting. I bought mine in 2020 and it starts on the first or second pull provided the ambient temp is 70 degrees F or higher. If it is below that temperature it can be tough to start. If I'm planning to use it when its cooler weather I put a parabolic space heater aimed it for 30 or so and that seems to make it start easily.

  • @jfnuyen
    @jfnuyen 5 років тому +2

    I have to use a little starter fluid (a bit of which is sprayed into the air intake) when it is hard to start because of a cold night. Then it starts on the first pull. When it is warm at night, I find the unit always seems to start on the third pull without using any fluid. By the way, this unit is really excellent and a bit fun to use when edging the lawn. 😀

    Great video. Edger veteran. This model is powerful and adjustable, but seems to be missing any curb guard, and it is hard to see where the blade is landing - all that is bad when it grinds up both the blade and sidewalk. Ideas anyone? Other brands/models sometimes have a small tab or guide to prevent blade wear.

  • @a1930ford
    @a1930ford 3 роки тому +1

    I bought one of these yesterday. All I had to do was to add gas, as it was put together at the store and had oil already in it. Cranked it off easily the first time. Ran it to do one single row along my sidewalk. As you stated, you have to make more than one pass. I didn't like not having a guard to keep it from scraping my sidewalk or curb, but it did okay for what I had don at that moment. Suddenly, it just went dead. No matter how many times I pulled on that cord, it simply would not crank back over again. I have rheumatoid arthritis, so cranking endlessly with a pull cord really does do a number on me very quickly. I thought that maybe I had flooded the thing, so I put it away overnight and thought I'd try again the next morning. Well, darn if it would not crank off today, as well. I was ready to return this beast and ask for my money back, as I was frustrated to the max when it would not crank. However, I decided to watch some videos to see if I was missing something or not before doing that. Glad I saw this one, as I will give the starter fluid in the carb a go tomorrow to see if that saves me from returning it. I have an old edger that was being converted to LPG and the pull cord assembly was removed on it so that I could simply crank it with a modified socket, instead. Like say, I have arthritis, so cranking or pulling on a pull cord is not an easy thing for me to spend my time in doing. I have not disassembled the pull cord attachment on this machine, so I am not sure I can modify it like this or not. I have a special tool that spins when the socket is engaged, so that when the lawn mower motor cranks off, it does not spin my drill out of my hands. I'd love to find a video of someone tearing down the motor to this edger for repairs. That would give me an idea if my previous mod would work on it or not. I sure hop the starter fluid trick works, as I really hate to go through the nonsense of returning this unit. Thanks for your video on this edger.

      Wow, awesome feedback!!!

    • @a1930ford
      @a1930ford 3 роки тому

      @@ToolReviewZone Well, the starter fluid trick did indeed work at least the first time I tried it. However, after that, no matter how many pulls I did, the beast would simply not crank over and start for me. (Very frustrating). I went ahead and easily made the mod I had mentioned and that worked perfectly for ending all the hand pulling on that cord, but still this beast was refusing to start up for me. I put the choke into every possible position with no positive effect. I got a spark tester and had plenty of spark from the sparkplug. It had a half tank of new fuel, so that was not contaminated. I used the starter fluid trick to no avail, so far. I checked the carb for any stopped up areas, but didn't find any which showed. I ended up; removing the carb and purchased a brand new one to replace it. The machine had 2 different gaskets at the carb. Well one gasket at the carb and one that I found laying on the frame below the carb area. (Not sure what that was all about). Any rate, I am waiting on the weather to change a bit before I install the new carb. I have checked the gas lines and found them to be open. Not for certain just what the problem actually is at this point. My machine did not have to be assembled by me, as the Home Depot had them all done up and on display. I asked if they still had one in the box when I purchased it, but the worker there said this was the way they had come in from the factory. (I found that hard to believe). Any rate, I don't intend to return the beast, but am determined to find out just what the issue is and deal with it. I don't have a compression gauge to use and that may be a problem right there, but I do plan on keeping on with trying to figure just what is keeping my beast from running. When it did run before, it did indeed work great for me at the time. Without a primer bulb, this machine simply is lacking in my own opinion. I can't seem to find any videos on just how to install one on this machine, but the factory sure is missing the boat by not having such already. The reviews all seem to blast this machine as to not having such and being difficult to start. Like say, once it gets warmer weather that is not killing my arthritis as much, I'll slog on more in trying to repair this beast and get it back to running correctly. I'd love to find out the proper amount of gaskets and where they are located in hooking back the new carb, but the manuals don't really show that, as far as I know. Thanks for the video. It helps.

    Mine took quite a few pulls right out of the box. Once started, I let it run for a few minutes and shut it down. Started pulling a minute later and it took about 6 pulls to start after warming it up. Also, it dies if I don't keep the choke lever about a quarter of the way up. However, once it's running it works great! Just like you said.

    wow. 3 hrs to start?! I got it started on the 2nd pull. You are right, its built very well. My gripe is the curb hop wheel. When I set the curb wheel the front wheel was hovering. So i found myself pushing and trying to keep it level at same time. If the front wheel went down it would be fine. All in all an excellent and may add a BEAUTIFUL looking edger with it's general lee orange color. 😀

    Thanks for the video. My 12 year old Craftsman didn't die but all last season it was running poorly. I was just hoping to nurse it through the season so I could possible find a good deal on a used edger during the off-season.
    However I never did find anyone selling one that I thought was worth my money.
    Well yesterday morning I took out the old Craftsman, did pre-season service on it and even though I got it started it ran just as is it did last season which was awful.
    So I started searching for a replacement.
    I searched Lowes, Home Depot, Menards, Sears, and Ace Hardware.
    I found three levels of gas edgers; the Murray "baby" that more than one store had under different brands names for around $200, the Murray "poppa" for around $300 then the Powermate which I believe is a Coleman product at Home Depot for $224.
    After watching your video I decided that the middle was the best place for me so I got the Powermate.
    The Powermate is similar to my 12 year old Craftsman.
    Anyway, got it home, put it together and after 30 minutes of edging I think I made the right decision.
    Again thanks to for the video.

    Don't expect any gas engine to start easily on 2 to 4 week old gas, let alone months old; dump your fuel and run your engine till it stops before you lay it up. You might also want to make sure that your spark plug is cleaned and gapped. Since you have let old gas sit in the carburetor, you might also want to clean it. I work on a lot of small engines and these are the basics. Also, I prefer the choke because it is a more reliable way to set the air/ fuel mixture - the cheaper machines use the bulb.

    "Once you get it going" not a good sales pitch. I'm on my 3rd Troy Bilt. The first one wore out after 14 years, 2nd one my daughter borrowed. Haven't seen it since. I bought the 3rd one early spring 14. It also has a curb jumper. To set it all I have to do is step down on a handle by the right rear tire. The only problem I've had with it is the thru rod that is pushed when I change the belt got packed off with dirt and would not move. A couple of minutes with the pressure washer and I was back in business.

      Pinoy Teeguh I have to agree, my elderly father bought the Troy Bilt 29cc edger yesterday but after he told me my brother and I looked at reviews and videos and decided that he would be better off taking it back and getting the Powermate so that is what he did. He had to order it so it should be in the store soon but now I'm worried about him having starting issues! I'm gonna research on adding some kind of priming for this or maybe look into making a drill starter for it....I don't know yet but I'm going to see what I can find out to do because he doesn't need something that's going to be a pain to start but as far as the other features and build quality for the $ I think it's hard to beat!

    Just to add, use ethanol free gas. It sold at Home Depot $13 per gallon. (you have to buy eight 32 oz. cans to get that price)
    I was able to find gas station that sell pre-obama gas but its 20 miles away for $5 per gallon.
    Side note: had carburetor leak that went away on it's own. I know strange. It leaked around top seal. After seating for week, (I called Powermate and they told me to drive 1 hour one way to repair place). Just for kicks, I added gas and it did not leak and started right up...
    Did anybody experience anything like that?

  • @macknumber9

    Good review....primer bulb would be nice but you can do the same thing by just getting an empty spray can like carb cleaner or starter fluid..fill it with gasoline and just spray prime it....also pull it harder and all the way back....i think the issue may actually have something to do with the recoil starter...when I pull start mine I noticed I have to pull very far back before it stops....if I was 7ft 6 it would be alright

    2 star! Engine is bunk! People buy a walk behind to make the job easier! Engine is weak! Who wants to pull a cord 40 times to keep a $200+ machine running? Fought it for an hour, got about 6ft edged, then ran the gas dry for a speedy return to store! I repeat product is bunk!

    If you left gas in it for that long without a fuel additive it will need a new carburetor for about $13.00.

      Yeah but it did this right out of the box. I've recently reviewed other tools from them and they are absolutely amazing. This...not so much

      I have had one for about a year and it is bitch to get it started. Opened up the carb and found green algae. Will try to get the carb cleaned.

    No, it's not just your machine that's hard to start. My Powermate never started even after calling tech support and putting in the expensive small engine fuel. Never ever tried to start. I had to return it. Avoid this machine if you want to avoid a major hassle.

    I took my Powermate to ACE hardware in Calallen Tx to fix my leaking carburetor and it worked twice and the new carburetor started leaking gas again. Of course ACE wouldn’t fix their lousy job.

    This machine looks annoying, I could see myself picking it up and smashing it into the ground with all of my other lawn equipment that never starts

    I would not recommend or buy anything from this manufacturer again. The machine works really well if you can get it started. I've spent 2-3 hours some days to try to get it started just to put it back in the shed frustrated. It's not worth the trouble it takes to start this machine. Thumbs down and I give it zero stars. I've owned this machine 3 years and maybe only used it 10 times if that. Can never get it started.

    This same machine is manufactured in china for MAT Engine Technologies they sell the same thing under 4 labels Powermate, southland Air stream and Homelite. For the MONEY it is good, long term it's very sloppy and poorly made.

    First please try to buy new and good quality of carburetor when you had start problem
    Never ever buy very cheaper carburetor because after installed cheaper one that you will get huge leak gas from china carburetor your gas tank that easy to make an empty
    I bought cheap carburetor for many times and all cheaper carburetor has same problem. I know that still made in china carburetor so try to buy a good one.
    And try to keep original carburetor when you bought this unit and try to clean fix it.
    Anyhow cheaper price is always bring poor and shortife this unit
    Please do not wasting money!!!!
