York was our 2nd home next to Maple Grove every year from '65 to '79. We took our '69 Camaro Good Vibrations there many a weekend. Pro Stock & Funny Cars doing dry hops. Garlits, Muldowney, Prudhomme, Sox & Martin, the Grump. The best of the best of the best came to York. It was a sad day when she closed. Things were never the same after.. . . . memories
Wow, guess I never knew Jungle Jim was a Pro Stock racer before he got into match racing funny cars! Interesting. Supposedly from the 50's and 60's, yet we see Grumpy's Toy and Jungle Jim's '70's Vegas!! Never knew Grumpy and Jim had time travel machines!!
0:44 to 1:02 is my grandfather. that was before he did any modifications to the car. The creepy thing is that he said he never raced there, but how the driver looks he looks eerily like my grandfather. right down to the glasses. The car also looked like it speed shifted which he used to do in his Chevy. I get chills every time I watch that guy.
My dad and uncle had a 19654 GTO called UNDERDOG it did very well at York and National speedway. They went just about every weekend from 65-72 and very rarely have I ever seen footage. They even held the national record with the car in 69 at national speedway. Curious if you ever heard or seen the car.
Was there every Saturday night in the summer of '70. What a rush. Saw Roland Leong's Hawaiian and The Blue Max car. Used to be able to back the truck right up to the guardrail, open the cooler, and plop down in the lawn chair 3/4ths of the way down the track. Great rushes and memories. What a place it was. K.
I was there from 1968 till the track closed... Any one remember the topless ticket sellers @ York US30?...Let"s raise a glass to the late great John "Monk"Reynolds...you know who you are...
My Dad raced there throughout the late 60's and 1970's. His car was a 55 Chevy called The Gold Digger. It was Hemi powered with Hilborn injectors. Ran in Modified Eliminator. He was also the main wrenchman for Bob Widmeyer for several years. .
Dear Jim, SOMEWHERE in my collection of films is about a thousand feet of 16 mm color and perhaps 10 times that much 8mm and super 8 shot at races all over PA and NY. My uncle Jake was a great photo buff. He wrenched and drove stockers, loved sprint cars, hill climbs and 1/4 mile drags. He was active from the early 1950s to 1979. I continued the tradition and in 1968 bought a Bolex super 8 camera and shot a lot of Kodachrome and high speed Ektachrome up until I bought my first Beta machine. I'll start looking this Winter and see what I can find. I am more than a little surprised at the amount of interest in silent films from early drag racing. If I find anything interesting I'll give you first dibs. You are a good guy.
Thanks for the note Edward. Sounds like some interesting film you have. If you want me to do something with it let me know. Call toll free 866-385-2025
I went to my first drag race there in 1966. Went on many Saturday nights from 1968 through 1971. Usually when they had a match race booked in. Went to a couple of the Funny Car Nationals and the AHRA Summernationals in 1971. I got to see alot of the greats. The last race I attended was in 1976. Does anyone remember when they stopped racing there? Cool video. Thanks for posting!
I visited the York track regularly in the late 70's. I would love to find clips of the night the "Spirit of 76" came apart I think it would have been in 76. The next time I saw Sam Miller, he was driving the "Vanishing Point" I remember seeing many of the greats there, and being in the pits and able to meet and talk with drivers and pit crews, although I wish I had taken more pictures then I did, but still enjoy digging out the old album and looking through the shots I do have.
I built my first 350 chevy engine for my 365 chevelle drag only car using the book called HOW TO BUILD A SMALL BLOCK CHEVY.....BY BILL GRUMPY JENKINS...a true pioneer of the sport we all love
Wow, to see Jungle Jim Liberman racing at U.S. 30 dragway. When I was a kid my mom would stop at Steve Kanuka's speed shop on U.S. 202 on the way to Wilmington so me and my brother could look at his Vega funny car.
I lived in York, Pa from 1990 -1997...where was this dragstrip at ? Amazing to me the performance that some of the cars in the 50s had.... back when dinosaurs still roamed the planet..lol
I worked at the track from 69-76,and it was more than a blast! Still love that beautiful tower. Completely paved pits! -first annual NHRA and AHRA Summernationals held there(in the same year)!
This is the "Good-Stuff"!! We like "Pretty-Smart-Sexy-Sensuous-Ladies"! Creative fast Cars built by Innovators, Who use their own "Brains" an Who like who they are!!!
Why were they brushing tire black On the tread area of the slicks? Was that to stop the slicks from picking up pebbles and rocks on the way from the pit to the Bleach box?
Thanks for the compliment Greg. Yes we do add the sounds. It takes a lot of work but it is what separates us from others who distribute old movie footage. Check out our web page for a complete list of our videos.
Some of it the matching sound and some is dubbed in. Hard to tell which is and which is not isn't it? In any event we think it is better than a music track. Jim Amos Bee On Video
Does any body have any pictures of Ed Sloan & Denny Brown's "BEER WAGON " ? it was a '48 ANGLIA A/AA , BLOWN OLDS, YELLOW, WITH "SUNSHINE" BEER AD'S ON IT ,they later paint it gold. Ran in the late 50's to early '70's ? Ed is my older half brother.

Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins died today at the age of 81. He was a great inspiration to me since the 1960s. Respect and RIP Bill.

York US 30 Dragway...Still The Biggest- Still The Best
We see a lot of these old hot rods in dated pics but we rarely get to hear them. Great stuff!
Great Old Days Sorry to See them Gone Forever !!! Great Collection of Fabulous Cars & Drivers !!!
I may have been there the night of the Jet vs Funny Car, as well as Jungle Jim's appearance. Lot's of good memories.
My Uncle Charlie raced there in the late 50's, early 60's. He ran a Red 58 Chevy, named Red Dog. Remember the raced against Grumpy, Bill Jenkins.
The Grump, along with Ronnie Sox,Dick Landy and Don Nicholson were the early stars and pioneers of drag racing. The man was a genius! RIP Grump!
I lived in York, Pa from 1990 -1997...where was this dragstrip at ? Amazing to me the performance that some of the cars in the 50s had.... back when dinosaurs still roamed the planet..lol
The Amazing York US 30 Dragway was located on the runway at Thomasville Airport, just West of York on Route 30.
At 5:35 is my cousin Dotty. Back in the day she used always wore HOTPANTS and fishnet pantyhose! Still lives near Mt. Holly Springs and attends races.
Thanks for the information Ed. Dotty was one of the many pretty women attending races at York US 30. Send her our regards.

was there for the 1978 bracket finals lost first round
Was there also in 1978, also lost first round. Left too late, green was showing on the tree.
We started going there in 1966.

I'm surprised not to see John Bachman racing in any of these so far.
the coolest thing about this video is No mediun, and no guide rails.Great track!

just wondering how you obtained sound from a 50's video, or you've done a masterful job of adding it. just curious. awesome! !

Think I remember the car from the NHRA and AHRA nationals or either one. I will look for a photo.
Tom Loughlin Jr, Utica NY
Some of the scenes looked like the early 70's, like the halter tops. Also, thought I seen a 70 or 71 Camaro and some early 70's Cuda's.
Top fuel vs jet @ the end lol
Only reason i asked is i heard it was a sound over
