    Today I’m comparing 2 similar, but different cocktails - the Division Bell and Naked & Famous! Each cocktail is a modern classic and similar mezcal riffs on the Last Word. Though the Division Bell breaks from the all-equal-parts template, three out of four ingredients overlap between the two drinks. I also feel a personal connection with one of them because I thought I invented it. If you’ve created a drink only to learn it already exists somewhere else under another name - you can relate. This video’s for you. Cheers!

      I added Gin, Lemon juice, an egg white, simple syrup, and heavy cream together to make a “lemon meringue pie” cocktail. I shook it for a while to get a nice foam for it too… turned my world upside down when I discovered the Ramos Gin Fizz 😂

    The Division Bell was one of the first cocktails that really shocked me. Wasn’t like anything I’d had. Such a balance of Smokey, sweet, tart, and slightly bitter. One of my favorites.

    So... I made the Division Bell with Campari (because I didn't have Aperol). OMG! I always thought a cocktail could have _either_ grapefruit for Campari, but in this one, the grapefruit _and_ Campari is DIVINE! And then the smokey evolution just builds on that foundation like a famous architect. Bravo, Anders.

    I love mezcal cocktails. One of my favorites plays a bit with the same ingredients. Its called candelarian i think from a bartender in berlin. 3cl mezcal, 2cl dutch (white) cacao, 2 cl aperol, 2,5 cl lemon juice and then topped with 1 cl soda water. Its kinda my go to drink in summer.

    My husband and I spent some time in Oaxaca this summer touring Mezcal distilleries (small ones like family-owned and run in tiny villages) and tried several different kinds of Mezcal and even some Pechuga. We visited both some clay distilling and coper distilling and were able to get some bottles shipped home. We're making the Division Bell this evening! If you are ever interested in taking a trip to Oaxaca and want to visit small, unique paleques, I know an excellent tour guide! Also, I wonder what happens when you listen to the Division Bell while drinking the Division Bell...is that like watching Wizard of Oz while listening to Dark Side of the Moon??🤔

    This was great. The best Anders video in ages. I always slice my lemons that way! Good to see an Oz (spelling...) cameo appearance again. Don't worry about overdoing the dog... love the dog. Can't wait to make the drinks. By the way, I believe that Sam at Attaboy NY created the Paper Plane as a rif on the Last Word, and the Naked & Famous was created by Simo as a play on the Paper Plane. Just wanted to get that plug for the Paper Plane in there - although you've already done the Paper Plane!

    I'm coming to this video a bit late and I haven't been a mezcal fan. My wife, who isn't a cocktail person, asked me what mezcal tastes like and I told her, "It tastes like a tire fire." So I wasn't sure. Brief digression: I've looked at plenty of other cocktail / bartender videos and yours is simply the best, at least for me. Your recipes just work. My very favorite drinks are the ones you've introduced to me. And I love your presentation. I don't know what I find more relaxing, sipping one of your cocktails or watching one of your videos. Anyway, long story long, now I'm enjoying mezcal. The Naked & Famous is my favorite of the two: The Chartreuse gives it a complexity... anyway, you get it. Thanks again for all the great cocktails, education, and entertainment!

    Love me a last word riff, particularly those made with rum. I'm definitely going to give this a go. Great video. I thought I made a cocktail myself once...turns out, negroni variations and last word variations have ALL been made before.
    I made a bianco negroni one night using luxardo bitter bianco, which had been on sale at total wine so I figured- "Why not give it a try?!"(excellent bitter liqueur btw, highly recommend to anyone reading this comment). As well as some London dry style gin(I used Dripping springs traditional, but I've used several since) and Martini and Rossi Bianco, which I love to drink on ice as an aperitivo, all in equal parts and garnished with an orange twist. Turns out, I was hardly the first person to do this. But I'll be damned if it isn't still one of my favorite cocktails to this day.

    Here is an update for you! I've been to a bar in Honolulu, HI, and had a great experience in a Mezcal bar (Encore Sallon). One of the stars was a cocktail named "Glow Getter". I loved it. The recipe: Tequila, Aperol, Lime, Orgeat, and a spoon of Chartreuse! Its, just a twist from these 2 you presented! I thought it was super original, but I was shocked when I came across your video and found these other pre-existing similar recipes!

      @@AndersErickson Wonder why chartreuse is so hard to come by. Here in Norway (and in neighbouring Sweden) alcohol stronger than beer is sold at the wine monopoly (in Sweden they call it the system company). Anyway, you can basically have anything they sell nationwide ordered to your local store. In both countries the big bottles are sold out. Sold out nation wide in two countries. Half bottles still available though.

    Hi Anders, your video arrived at the perfect time. I’ve been thinking about creating my own cocktail since you did the Final Ward and this video has inspired me to make my own riff on the Last Word. I call it the Last Nail a mash up of a Rusty Nail and a Last Word. It is equal parts, ¾ oz each, blended scotch (I used Isaly Mist 8 year), Drambuie, Luxardo Maraschino, and lemon juice. No garnish. I am curious to see if you or anyone in the comments has seen this riff or something similar. Also, if anyone tries it, I would be interested to hear what they think. Thanks again for all the great content.

      Another Phil Ward original! See - that guy's everywhere!
      1.5 oz Reposado Tequila
      .5 oz Mezcal
      Barspoon Agave Nectar
      2 dashes Angostura bitters
      - I think his recipe calls for an orange twist, but I like this one with grapefruit (so good with the mezcal!). If I'm in a "smokey" mood, I'll make it an even split of tequila & mezcal - and I've been known to add an extra dash or two of Ango 🤫

    both of these look awesome. Do you think yellow chartreuse could be subbed with green or with dolin genepy for a close enough effect? I've never tasted yellow chartreuse .

    Just enjoyed the Division Bell tonight. Really liked the schematic in this video mapping out the riffs/evolutions from the base Last Word cocktail. Out of curiosity, what were your different ratios on the Smokey Rose?

  • @peatypete67
    @peatypete67 Рік тому

    I love your diagram explaining the connection of each of these drinks to the Last Word! (Could one include the Maximiliano Affair in this "family"? It seems to have a similar pedigree.) I came across this video while trying to decide which of them to make tonight... although I make my Naked and Famous with Strega since yellow Chartreuse is *impossible* to find right now. I think I'll be going with the Division Bell tonight, although a side-by-side flavor comparison would be a lot of fun - but not on a "school night." I am a big fan of Banhez mezcal, it has that sweet smokiness which I like. Side note: I used the Division Bell ratios for my own (?) riff on the Last Word, with Laird's straight apple brandy, Strega, Ramazzotti (I broke down and bought a bottle...), and lemon juice.

    Hi Anders! I found your UA-cam channel less than a year ago and I became an instant fan.. I've watched most of your videos, some of them several times, and you've been a great help while I take my firsts few steps into bartending, thanks for everything!
    You probably go thru a lot of messages, requests and suggestions, but hopefully this is a new one or a good one..
    Last night I was working at the bar (in Vancouver, BC) and a customer asked if we had Malort, I instantly felt confused and ignorant, so I asked other bartenders only to get the same reaction from them. So I went back and apologized to the customer and he replied: "don't worry, it must be an American thing", which brought me to Google and eventually found out it's not only an American thing but a Chicago thing specifically.
    So all this story brings me to this question:
    How come you haven't done a video about Malort?

    • @brianherman503
      @brianherman503 Рік тому

      I belive he has!

      It's a "Bäsk" (Swedish word meaning "bitter" used to describe any bitter schnaps made with wormwood) The "Malört" in the name just means wormwood. So you can probably try with e.g. Absinthe if you can't get a Bäsk. (the letter "ä" is pronounced like the "e" in mezcal and "ö" is pronounced like the "i" in "bird")

    • @David-mg8zu
      @David-mg8zu Рік тому +1

      @@AndersErickson the Little Mermaid is a softer drink, not as crazy as the N&F:
      - 1.5 oz lightly aged Spanish style rum (Bacardi 8, or Angustura 7)
      - 3/4 oz lime juice
      - 3/4 oz apricot liquor
      - 3/4 oz aperol
      Shaken & double strained into a coupe glass and garnish with an orange twist

    • @David-mg8zu
      @David-mg8zu Рік тому

      @@AndersErickson by the way, if the volume is too much for your coupe glass then you can scale it back a little, such as:
      - 1 1/3 oz lightly aged rum
      - 2/3 oz lime juice
      - 2/3 oz apricot liquor
      - 2/3 oz aperol
