oh 100% a video of what if Toxic was not a move in the game, or if Toxic was a move exclusive to poison types could be cool pokemon like skarm or celebi without toxic would be gamechanging
I don't know anything about gen 9 OU, but sleep is the most powerful status condition except for early gens freeze (back when self-thawing and enemy-thawing moves were far less common or nonexistent in the meta and self-thaw chance itself was either lower or non-existent), and it's much easier to apply than the only other status condition that matches it (later-gens freeze). You can't escape from sleep by your own action, unlike freeze (which you can force a thaw with scald or a bunch of different fire moves, and fire and water types resist the moves that cause freeze), you cannot play around it except with the rngfest of sleep talk (again, much worse than self-thaw moves and arguably just as bad as needing to find a fire move to eat in later gens) or the catch-all counterplay of a dedicated item/ability slot to protect from status, and guaranteed free turns are way bigger than any of the other effects of status conditions. Historically, apart from freeze-fishing in gens 1 and 2, sleep has been consistently the biggest, most impactful status condition on singles, even in generations that have paralysis as a key part of the metagame, like with Gen 4's Jirachi and Clefable shenanigans. Teams are much more easily broken in half by sleep than by any other status condition historically (even in gens 1 and 2, although in those two it is entirely because sleep is more easily applied). Does this mean it's broken? Not necessarily, but it does mean it's easily the most centralizing status condition, and given it is, beyond being massively impactful, very rng dependent both on effect and in counterplay (again, sleep talk's rng-fest), I think there is an argument to be made that sleep is uncompetitive in its nature, and that the meta would/could be healthier if the tools to consistently apply it were banned or greatly restricted. Of course, I hardly am qualified to dictate tiering in... any meta or generation, really, and I'm sure better players than me who know the meta of their preferred tiers better than me have perfectly valid argument for why sleep is a good part of the meta, but I think it might be worth suspect testing or otherwise discussing its current position in at least a few of the metas I consistently play (mostly gens 3 and 4 OU, gens 8 and 9 NDUU)
Complicated situation. The "artificial" nature of sleep clause can be countered by freeze clause, but there are many elements to sleep that are just blatantly anti-competitive and over-centralizing. The only really "good" thing about sleep is that it provides usage for otherwise mediocre Mons, but otherwise there just isn't a great way about dealing with it since it's such a powerful and volatile mechanic. The route of making moves inaccurate to compensate really just increases variance and luck, I think it works better like Freeze (which I also wish they would just convert to Frostbite already) where at best it's a low chance added effect (outside of Rest obv, and also Yawn is a pretty neat move). The thing that makes me question this more than anything is how it will translate to other luck based elements like Para over time. At the end of the day we have to remember that Pokemon is, and was not designed to be a perfect, fair, and objectively skillful experience, we have to try our best to mold it as close to that way as we can (while still being fun and enjoyable) using the tools GF gives to us.
Status is probably the best way to stop set up sweepers or walls clicking recovery ad nauseum but damn for every other scenario is it just annoying. Losing turns just feels to gut wrenching

Calling gen 9 competitive the dumb action movie of Pokémon is really accurate Also I’m ashamed to say that someone finding finch’s real life phone number to rant about the sleep ban doesn’t phase me at all. I was just like “yup, sounds about right” due to being raised in communities where toxicity outside of the game is the norm. It’s definitely going to continue like this if smogon doesn’t change.
Woah you were raised in toxic communities and nothing phases you at all? That's really cool man. You are a tough guy. I hope I never cross someone like you out there in the streets.
"ohh nooooo he called his phone number" big fucking deal, people get shit mailed to their physical house all the time. be thankful that the average age in the smogon community is 15 and the average skin tone is brown because if that was not the case you would see council members get doxxed all the time LMAO
sleep was quick banned because scrubs and 1200 players don’t realize how powerful darkrai is with the ability to sleep something same with iron valiant
Big smogon moving heaven and earth to avoid having to ban Darkrai and Valiant. No idea why Yawn would get banned ever when all the complaints of Sleep lucking people and preventing any counterplay is not present at all with Yawn which functions closer to perish song in forcing enemies to switch or pay the price.
This may have the ulterior motive of wanting to make smogon “legit”. They’ve always been uncomfortable with the fact that sleep clause could not be replicated in-game.
This wasn't just about those 2. It was H-lilligant, Amoongus too. 4 Pokemon who were doing nonsense with sleep 3 of which were using inaccurate moves and one that was doing extra cheese nonsese with eject button spore. Like this shows that the issue is sleep not Valiant and Darkrai. Although I do think that Valiant is too strong but not because of sleep. Then there's also the whole deal with sleep clause being a mod instead of a rule like everything else which a lot of oldheads seemed to dislike
Electric + misty terrain blocking sleep/other status is probably a big reason for the lack of spore sleep abuse in gen 7. The problem is like you said, there’s too much optimization on the Pokémon they’re all(mostly)very viable competitively this is essentially turning it into a 6v5 with one Pokémon slept.
I don't like the ban but even from his tweets it made more people mad and the fact this was the council not the community in my opinion gen 5 ban on sleep was good gen 9 not so much there's a difference in mechanics and I think it would have just been better to give this band choice to the community instead of the council
I was cool with it until I realized it wasn't a community suspect tbh. I, for some reason, thought that there was a suspect test for it that got it banned.
@@goobingtons I thought it was going to be that too but when I saw that the council themselves were making a huge change to the metagame including a whole status I felt that it was too much and that the community should have this vote not the council
Yea for real LOL. Just admit that you want to keep Darkrai around and quit pretending like you actually did this because of sleep itself.
Definitely not. Hypnosis Val has been a thing since practically the start of gen 9 with on/off again usage. It might seem like a meme, but then you use it to sleep your opponent's valiant answer or something that might answer your other setup sweeper and realize you just won the game off a free turn.@@CastafioreOnUA-cam
The Gen 9 OU council has been a complete joke here imo. Sleep has been fine all gen long and as soon as they drop Darkrai, a mon that used to be S teir in UBERS before it's best sleeping method got nerfed from 80% to 60% and shocker it proves to be completely broken in Gen 9 OU, a much lower power level than UBERS and instead of banning Darkrai they ban Sleep? WTF?
Well the idea is that hypnosis creates unhealthy 50/50s, which has been the case with iron valiant as well. Darkrai is very mid outside of that in all honesty. Now why they decided to ban all sleep, including yawn, instead of just banning hypnosis? And without taking any type of public opinion on the best course of action? Really couldnt tell you
I think my main issue with this is easily the policy being sent down the tiering ladder and affecting all tiers below OU due to a policy primarily enacted due to Iron Valiant and Darkrai. completely fine with the OU ban but lower tiers just having to deal with it and being told flat out that OU decisions don't care about them is so stupid to me. if the decision isn't taking them into consideration, why does the outcome affect their tier at all
I don’t think Gen 7 or 8 needs a sleep ban because of Tapu Koko E-Terrain and Tapu Fini M-Terrain, but I could see the argument for previous gens. Take Gen 6 with a potential Mega Gardevoir or Gallade Hypnosis. That could be an insane swing for the user-but very risky considering it’s a 60% move on your not-so-bulky Mega.
That’s essentially why it got banned in gen 9. Hypnosis on a fast setup sweeper is either gonna win the whole game instantly or waste the Mon, it makes the game too coinflippy.

Sleep isn't that good in any gen but 1, 2 and 5, but it's a fundamental part of gen 1, very well handled in gen 2 by sleep talk + clause, and banned in 5. In all the rest it's not an abominably good strategy. But it is insanely annoying to play against and use. Praying to land 75/60/55 accuracy moves on already bad Pokemon and then praying to not get slaughtered by an immediate wake up make it hella frustrating to use, and getting 5 turn sleeps while never dodging makes it extremely annoying to fight. I would never argue that sleep is unfair, but i would personally have way more fun with it gone and i think the average game would be much less frustrating for the player base if it wasn't in the game. I disagree with the logic behind the ban, but I'll probably be happier with it gone tbh.
hello i'm a rby player (lame gen uh like it's just luck am I right) and no, sleep isn't actually broken unlike what smogoons are saying and yes the sleep clause is indeed killing the game. their bias against offense and current gen gimmicks is staggering and I'm thinking about quitting the tier
To be fair, Finch made it sound more like it was a thing about it being both strong and high variance. Also, while yes, the sleep mechanics are more dumb in gen 1, it's not necessarily a 100% logically sound conclusion to come to that because it's ok in gen 1 it's ok in gen 9. Generally, (and very generally) the time to kill I guess I'd call it in gen 9 is much much lower than in gen 1 with stuff like choice items, tera, paradox and legendaries and Pokemon having access to boosting moves that are fast and strong already. Nothing in OU has both above 30 base speed and a relevant offensive boosting move (other than maybe agility zapdos but I mean more stuff like boosting attacking stats). It means that there's much much less that can use a turn or 2 to instantly run away with the game like stuff like dd moon, volc, or hell, even the sleep abusers like val and darkrai can. Then there's the matter of who's using the moves. Jinx, Gengar and eggy are all scary in their own right, but again, they don't have as much run away with the game power as stuff like Val, darkrai or even lilligant H. I personally didn't super like sleep because it just felt bad to play against, but I don't like how they handled it. But anyway, point is, saying "it's ok in gen 1 so it must be ok in gen 9" isn't necessarily true is all
@@Justanerd-qj2hd Don't forget Gen 1 having maxed out stat exp for all, making everything more bulky which also makes the time to kill lower. Anyway, fuck sleep, it fucking sucks (from a fun perspective) in everything due to its absurd variance. It may or may not be overpowered (I am absolutely not qualified to say) but holy shit is "it just doesn't work half the time" an unfun way to balance something.
Can’t believe this discussion is even happening outside of Gen 9. Been playing the game for 15 years and sleep has never been an issue for skilled players (bar gen 5). “High level” players need to get good and learn to play around the sleep, it’s not hard.

Sleep is the worst mechanic of competitive Pokémon. I have no idea why the mechanic has been allowed to exist for as long as it has in competitive. Sleep clause is insufficient.
I don't understand how sleep was banned and yet we still have Goldengo and Kingambit ruling over OU. The councel is banning everything except what needs banned. I play on the actual game now. Yeah know, where I can use all game mechanics including sleep.
Because they were deemed less of a problem by the community in the most recent community survey. What do you want them to do, not listen to the community?
Yes. Earthbound is broken and can destroy your entire team if all of them are asleep, the thing is when you attack a sleep enemy he will woke up, makes sense isn't? Then why game freak do the same? Is stupid nerf something situational like burn and not the sleep mechanic
I think what they mean is that in Earthbound, when you get hit you're more likely to wake up, and that Pokemon should've had this mechanic to limit sleep. It'd be better to deal with but it'd still have the issue of the opponent being able to set up calm mind or whatever else
@@fayestra2486 I mean usually when someone is taking advantage of a sleeping pokemon it's for setup or switching around so no it would not fix the issue
I dont have a problem with them banning sleep if they thought the status was broken on more than just two broken sweepers after the meta had settled. Instead there's literally darkrai in the OU tier doing whatever it wants while it still feels like crap to play due to the power creep. Instead of taking tiering actions against two actual problems then deciding on sleep as a whole if it continued to be one, they decided keeping an uber who abuses it in the tier and got rid of a whole mechanic hurting viablilty of far worse mons with less problematic elements. The previous dlcs meta didn't have it as an issue until Darkrai popped up and IV realized it could also hop on the cheese train as one of its 30 potential sets.
Hey B K poop, can you attempt to assemble another tournament? Your DPP ubers is unironically one of my favorite competitive Pokemon event, ever. I would love to see another one, maybe gen 3 OU? Keep it going man you are the greatest
I hate to say it, but rng is good on a competitive level. Playing through varience proves who the goods and greats are. Sure it sucks to lose to a an rng mechanic, but its pervasive through the whole game. Even attack rolls are rng based. Sleep is dumb and no one thinks it isnt, but if you really want to remove varience like sleep completely go play chess. The bettsr player wins every time in chess. I think the real reason this gets backlash is if people wanted to play chess they would. People come to showdown to play Pokémon (which sleep is inherently a part of and the previous clause was a fine mid ground).

Calling gen 9 competitive the dumb action movie of Pokémon is really accurate
Also I’m ashamed to say that someone finding finch’s real life phone number to rant about the sleep ban doesn’t phase me at all.
Yawn is what really got me with this ban. I can at least understand the arguments for banning every other sleep move, but yawn? Cmon now
Wake up babe, bkc upload at 2 am
Sleep is broken, but is it as broken as having one less method of dealing with a runaway sweeper? I say no, and thus sleep should not be banned
I can only imagine the voice-mail Ryan Gosling leaves for BKC
There was a community vote.

1.Unban Darkrai because it cant sleep anymore
2.Realise that hypnosis darkrai is broken
3.Ban sleep
Wtf
Yeah its almost like Darkrai is the problem or something
Yea for real LOL. Like sure, Sleep is definitely bullshit and is probably worth arguing for a ban in a vacuum, but the fact they just so happened to come to that conclusion after people started running Hypnosis more on Darkrai is sus as fuck. Just admit that you want to keep Darkrai around and quit pretending like you actually did this because of sleep itself.
4. Realize Iron Valiant also gets hypnosis and basically does the same thing Darkrai does but with more movesets
@@balisticemerald8512wait people run hypnosis Iron Valiant sets fr? Thought that was a meme

Really couldnt tell you
falling asleep to BKC videos is a vibe
I think my main issue with this is easily the policy being sent down the tiering ladder and affecting all tiers below OU due to a policy primarily enacted due to Iron Valiant and Darkrai. completely fine with the OU ban but lower tiers just having to deal with it and being told flat out that OU decisions don't care about them is so stupid to me. if the decision isn't taking them into consideration, why does the outcome affect their tier at all
Gen 9 has just been the council repeating the same mistakes all over again. Wow can’t believe DARKRAI is problematic. Truly didn’t see that coming
The council is listening to community input far more than ever before, so if anything go ahead and whine about the community.
@@brain_tonic there are so many things that come down to a coin flip in Pokemon though. Including the biggest 50/50 in Kingambit...

As a 1600 rated player in Gen3 ADV, leave my sleep/breloom alone. There are plenty more overbearing/centralising things in ADV (skarmory, ninjask, dugtrio, blissey, jirachi). People literally run Magneton for the sole purpose of trapping skarm...and skarms still valid.
If only the Pokemon with Insomnia were viable against the rest of the metagame.
Funny how this video is stopping me from sleeping right now
The analogy of gen 9 being a dumb action movie fits so perfectly and it honestly makes me appreciate the generation more
At one point do we have to admit that Pokemon is the Marvel of video games?

Amongus breloom and torkols coverage had to die to let darkrai exist. Very cool! Can't wait till gen 10 when darkrai gets stun spore and para is banned next :)
Dakrai will get banned because para must protected at all cost
With darkrai finally being OU legal. It only took getting sioped before oras and ash gren dyin in the process.
I can very much tell u dark rai is still a PoS sleep or not. Just use sub twave. Odds are you are getting haxed if you are not para flinching.
At least theoretically Breloom is sitting dandier than amoongus. Worry seed would be very handy for gliscor. Why is that a move Breloom got to keep in dexit?

I disagree with the logic behind the ban, but I'll probably be happier with it gone tbh.

hoooooooly calling a real life number is crazy wow
hello i'm a rby player (lame gen uh like it's just luck am I right) and no, sleep isn't actually broken unlike what smogoons are saying and yes the sleep clause is indeed killing the game. their bias against offense and current gen gimmicks is staggering and I'm thinking about quitting the tier
But anyway, point is, saying "it's ok in gen 1 so it must be ok in gen 9" isn't necessarily true is all
no one cares if you quit or not, you are not the main character
@@Justanerd-qj2hd Don't forget Gen 1 having maxed out stat exp for all, making everything more bulky which also makes the time to kill lower.
Anyway, fuck sleep, it fucking sucks (from a fun perspective) in everything due to its absurd variance. It may or may not be overpowered (I am absolutely not qualified to say) but holy shit is "it just doesn't work half the time" an unfun way to balance something.
People bitch about sleep? I got games where I get crits 2-6 times or frz and missing 80 and 90% moves back to back. Nothing wrong with sleep or that.

Can’t believe this discussion is even happening outside of Gen 9. Been playing the game for 15 years and sleep has never been an issue for skilled players (bar gen 5). “High level” players need to get good and learn to play around the sleep, it’s not hard.

I think what they mean is that in Earthbound, when you get hit you're more likely to wake up, and that Pokemon should've had this mechanic to limit sleep.

The loss of easy terrain on powerful pokemon in the tapus has really fucked up gen 9
