Ranger School graduate class 3 Feb 15 2001. I agree completely. It's a course for "leaders" to test if they can lead, not just, on their worst day. They do it to test if they can lead if their worst day lasted 62 days, in ways that would break nearly all who tried. You are a leader who cannot be broken if you graduate. But you don't see the aimless in the ranks of graduates.

Ten percent leave the course for administrative reasons (injury, voluntary removal, major violations of course rules, etc.). Thirteen percent leave for failing their graded patrols. Finally, less than 1 percent fail for bad evaluations by their peers, perhaps the only direct measure of leadership flaws.”

@@chenbong3929 yeah my experience was a little different. I hate playing the victim card because it's not my character. But I went during the first months of COVID. The population for ranger school at the time was super small because they were only accepting students from Benning and eventually Campbell and Stewart. I did 2 Darbys, and 2 Mountains. I'm not going to lie I got peered my first Mountains for being the "gray man" although I passed my patrols. Lesson Learned. Recycled for 3 weeks and got put with a new Squad. We had great chemistry and they accepted me well, plus I knew the POI in super detail because of clases during Recycle. Then right after Rappel week and at the beginning of Techniques (practice before doing the Mountain Phase FTX) I was switched to a new squad because they barely had 11 people and complained about it.
I passed both of my patrols, got a major plus spot report (a RI gave it to me for picking up trash), and still got peered out by that Squad. When I protested at the Battalion and Brigade boards, I got shot down even though my Peer comments were all positive and they just ranked me low. I got a Do Not Return for a year, and went forward to my unit.
People say that not having a ranger tab as an infantry officer is bad, that it hurts your career, and that you'll get tab checked and overlooked. Honestly that experience has truly humbled me, and I learned a lot from the training I was taught there. In my opinion, not having my tab made me a better officer/leader because I was looked over by my peers with tabs. And I always had to work to prove myself because of it. I'm not an OER chaser or a brown nose, but I can confidently say that my last 3 OERs have been MQs.

14-89. Four phases (Benning, Mountain(Ga), Swamp(FL), Desert(UT). It was a GUT check. Biggest Cuts(fails) were in the first two weeks at Benning during PT, Ruck, Land Nav, Swim Test, Runs). Later phases were injuries and inabilities to pass patrols (and just to gut it out) - I was surprised at how many people were cut from the course for not being prepared prior to showing up, and those that just said, “they were done and didn’t want to gut it out”. Ranger School was very much a look into a persons soul and what they would give you, themselves and the team when the chips were down (in a controlled situation that was extended for 74 days). *everyone there KNEW it would eventually end, but they still quit. “It definitely gives you a look at people and also let’s you put the average Joe on a scale as to how he will behave when the Shit really hits the fan on the streets of this country, if things were to go sideways - trust no one.” Outside of all of that, go get the tab.

It may not have leadership in the POI, but I was being graded at a skill level 3 and 4, as. PFC. I spent 6 months in Ranger School, because I showed up completely unprepared. BUT I had to learn the BIG ARMY’s dirty little secret, which is most Leaders (Officers and NCO’s) don’t understand basic patrolling on Squad and Platoon level. They don’t understand how dynamic the Battle Field can be, so they struggle to adapt, and they don’t prepare students well for Ranger School.
Many try to hide their lack of understanding, by burying themselves and their subordinates in a overly complex planning and execution process. Soldiers usually articulate this as “What the fuck is happening?” Generally, the answer is “nothing is happening”.
This is where the SOF community separates themselves. They understand how dynamic the Battle Field is so they develop “Principles” for everything. These principles allow them to develop a fairly simple plan, that can be adapted to MANY different scenarios. AND that is Ranger School.
Darby is displaying you understand doctrinal Squad Operations with a Machine Gun Team attached.
Mountains is displaying you understanding Doctrinal (Light) Platoon Operations with three squads, and two machine guns teams.
And Florida is the “Run Phase”, students need to display they understand doctrine, but they also don’t allow doctrine to restrict creativity and common sense.
The enemy WILL always get a vote, and when they make a mistake you need to exploit that mistake. BUT units that are trying to get out of their own way, will miss it because they aren’t paying attention. Ranger School is a validation course…

I’ve always believed that there are two types of warriors those that are natural leaders and those that are better at following orders. They are both extremely important to the success of a mission. One cannot survive without the other. Now I believe leadership can be learned but only through experience which is why those that follow usually become great leaders later in their careers. Learning to lead is often easier but learning how to follow can be extremely challenging

I believe this. I'm going through OCS as a prior enlisted and I quite miss being a follower because leadership isn't natural to me. But I've been in that position and now the school is breaking down the follower to build me up as a leader. It works slowly for me but it's working nonetheless. And once I become a 2LT, it'll still be a learning process since we all know how butter bars are.
Having lived both lives is something I'm glad to have experienced. A part of me wishes I had had some NCO time too but it honestly isn't great for some people before going Officer, since you can easily get locked into that enlisted mindset. It depends on the soldier, really.

Graduate of Class 05-05. I humbly disagree and so would SH 21-76 (Ranger Handbook). Are there things that one should know prior to attending? Yes. However, if you attending any school you should have a foundational understanding of what you’re getting into. Ranger School is not an assessment and selection.
I went as a PFC and was thrown into several high end leadership positions (Darby - SL, Mountains - PSG, Swamps - PL planning). I learned the basics of planning in what was at the time called Pre-Ranger now is Small Unit Ranger Tactics. That said what I learned in Pre-Ranger was taught again at length during the course. Principles of leadership was also taught THROUGHOUT the course. The number one item that you’re taught is how to serve others while in austere conditions and while being mentally/physically exhausted. Additionally, you will be thrown into leadership positions over people who may or may not be of higher rank and more experienced than yourself (Ranger School is rank immaterial). Your success will mainly be dependent on your ability to lean on the knowledge and experience of those you’re in charge of to make things happen and make them happen successfully. You will be evaluated on your ability to lead, work well with others, and be decisive.
Prior to school, some may have a propensity towards some of the leadership attributes necessary to be successful but the majority do not. Some have a proclivity to being successful due to the stressors candidates experience throughout the 62 days. However, to say Ranger School is not a military leadership course is flat out wrong advice.
Personal knowledge. We had a group of 5 SF guys who had recently graduated the Q and received their long tabs and green berets. They went to Pre-Ranger with my class. Of the 5 that went on one graduated from Ranger School with the other four quitting. Additionally, their team sergeants sent them so they can gain some leadership experience and more knowledge about themselves.
Going to Ranger School prior to going to SFAS will set those candidates up for success in the Q and when on a team. Is it necessary prior to attending SFAS? no. However, I would argue that a Ranger qualified candidate will bring something more to the table.
That 62% failing because of the physical requirements is mainly on the first day and this stat is based of the first weeks. Think about it. If you can’t meet the physical requirements why allow a candidate to continue the remaining 57 days?

Many years ago, I was with the 118th M. P Co. 16th M.P. BDE. The only M. P Airborne BDE in the Army. My sqd leader SSG Amablie went to Ranger school. He earned his tab. Ranger school doesn't sound like fun. I went through Marine Corps bootcamp back in 1988. I'm not going to say I had a blast but I had fun and enjoyed it. In the 3 months, I lost fat and gained muscle. Got plenty of sleep and food.
Sounds like Ranger school is longer, not enough sleep, not enough food, and a lot of exercise and hard work. This is a good combination to lose muscle and gain fat.

I was in the Rangers in the early 80s. Went to Fort Benning for infantry, Airborne school , did my AIT there as well and Ranger school. With that being said in today's world the military itself is not leadership. Our military is weak and broken compared to 80s. Todays military with the new our new generation is a big joke. The government has failed the new generation for many reasons, First they allow the soldiers to take there cell phones out in the field which is a big no no, They now have women in the combat field which is another no no, I have seen UA-cam videos of females and males having sex out in the field ( wtf ) this makes the soldiers weak and vulnerable, How can you perform your combat training with any seriousness if your occupied with free sex out in the field, it's a big joke. Also they pretty much have hot meals out in the field, to much luxury for soldiers out in the field which again makes a soldier weak . My cousin said to me now they have stress cards for basic training soldiers that each soldier gets and if that soldier feels the drill sergeant is to hard on him or her they pull out this stupid stress card and are allowed to take a 1hr break ? Are you kidding me. There is no way in gods Creation I would do any combat with our new generation because they would get me killed because they would be in there cell phones texting there mommy and daddy not paying attention. It's ridiculous. Back in the 80s The military itself taught you leadership including Ranger school or any other school but now the military is not like it was back in the 80s. Army and all military is one big joke now. It's not as hard core as it once was. The new generation is completely clueless as to how the military was back in the 80s. So they will never know, They all think they know it all because this is how are new generation is, They probably think the military is hard but it's not hard at all in today's world, These soldiers today would never make it through basic training in the 80s because they are given to much luxury in today's world. They don't know what it's like to shoot a M -16 with open sights and have to hit your target we had no red dot scopes lol , only people who had scopes were snipers. In today's world if the soldiers red dot fails they will all die because they would not know how shoot with open sights. Ranger School is probably not leadership in today's world but the military in general is not leadership anymore because they are to soft now, they let the soldiers get away with way to much. The reason women are making it through Ranger school is because it's not as hard as it was back in the 80s. There are to many followers out there and not enough leaders in 2023. The new generation has it to easy . The things they think are hard are easy compared to what it was in the 80s. Of course I'm sure all these new generation will disagree because that's there mentality.

I agree with a lot of this but not 100% on the premise. Every candidate rotates through several leadership positions during the course and that is what most of the grading is based on. I don't see how that equates to "leadership is not in the POI" -in my opinion that's because the entire course is about basic leadership under the most stressful mental and physical conditions. Ask this question- "can you pass Ranger school if you fail all your graded leadership positions " - of course not. I hated every minute of Ranger school; but in my first assignment as an Infantry platoon leader I began to see the genius of the course.

This is not true in all cases. I gained a lot of lessons in leadership from that course. I recycled every phase for patrols and here are some of the major lessons I learned as a junior officer with minimal leadership experience at the time.
    1. Don’t blindly trust people that have poor reputations with competency and attitude. It’s easy for a junior officer to blindly trust another Soldier just because they’re an NCO. There are a lot of incompetent Officers in the Army and more incompetent NCOs. That’s just because there are more NCOs than Officers. It takes a mature leader to be able to place the mission first instead of appeasing an incompetent Soldier’s advice.
    2. Be empathetic. The worst people to work with were the individuals that lost their shit over people falling asleep. Everyone fell asleep on patrol because we’re all human and getting unnaturally deprived of sleep. I would lose a lot of respect for people that made falling asleep a personal insult because they act as hypocrites. Just be gentle when you can and stern when necessary.
    3. Don’t do everything by the book. Decision making can be simple and fast if you quickly evaluate what will happen if you DON’T make that decision. Whichever option would have a worse outcome if you don’t make it, then that’s the right decision.
    4. Be comfortable with assuming tactical risk and have a justified reason for it. Don’t just cut corners to cut corners.
Ranger school won’t teach you how to be a good leader in garrison, it teaches you how to be a good tactical leader, decision maker, and member of a team. Just because you have a tab won’t make you a great leader. Ranger school is about 85% luck and 15% competency.
Definitely saw a lot of guys pass their patrols that shouldn’t have but got lucky because RIs have different opinions and sometimes aren’t always watching. I would argue that people who go straight through have less lessons and experiences to learn from.
