- From 1969, a round of applause for the UA-cam return of "There Once Was A Hand"! Commence calling your therapists ;-) Narrated by Skip Hinnant ("The Electric Company", Fargo North, Decoder), a live-action film of a proud but unhappy hand that wishes he could make a noise. Four other sketches in a similar vein linked below. One hand tickling another, two hands with a ping pong ball and an egg, two hands counting to 11, and one hand spinning a top.

Even though it's been over 50yrs I remember this as if it were yesterday, one of the 💎 of my childhood Auckland New Zealand 2024
Oh, wow! It's been almost 50 years since I saw this!! Our kindergarten class would watch "Sesame Street" for an hour every day after recess, and I started kindergarten in September of '69. Sigh! When did I get so damn old?
I haven't seen this in sooooo long!
these skits scared me when i was little, lol
I'm 55 years old. All of us saw this skit when we were kids... now here we are meeting for the first time.
I'm also 55 now. I was 4 when this show premiered, so I think we were the first kids raised on it.
@@jehobden I to am 55. I used to copy this skit in front of a mirror. You know we lived in a good era.
Thanks for posting!
Yes,very similar to two of the other early segments you mentioned,"Hands count to 11" and "fingers spinning a top," since, like this segment, those other two demonstrate that it really is impossible to perform certain tasks, without a certain,or extra, part of the body-we need two hands to clap,it takes a third hand to count to 11 using the fingers, and finally, it takes using our thumb, together with the four fingers,to spin a top. Saw this and all the other four segments you mentioned, frequently in 1970s.
And yes, that definitely is Skip Hinnant,of Electric company fame, doing the voiceover here(yes,Fargo North,Decoder, and JJ, boyfriend of Winnie, played.by Judy Graubart,on 1970s Electric company.)
MrJamieMurph4141969 Didn’t he also voice Fritz the Cat?
Yes.
And a bit of trivia info for you: he also voiced the Easter Bunny in the prime time Easter special The Easter Bunny is coming to town, which premiered, coincidentally, in 1977, just before Electric Company ended production.
Sad to hear about Skip Hinnant's passing.
When I watched this as a kid, when the second hand appeared with the organ music, it almost felt religious. It made young me think, "This must be what Church is like..."
[Mind you, I was raised in a very non-religious home - Mom had had less-than-pleasant experiences growing up and Dad's family didn't put much effort into to faith - so this was as close as I ever got to Church. I mean, my questions about religion were always answered, and Mom even got me a really nice picture Bible when I expressed an interest. It was just never forced onto me.]
This scared me SOOOO much as a little kid! At 48, I'm sad to say I feel so brave that I dared to watch it again!
Good for you, Amy! Never too late to conquer our fears :-)
I was scared of them too! your not the only one that felt that way about these skits
This also used to scare my sister to death. I remember getting in serious trouble when I closed the door and forced her to watch it - over 45 years ago.
@@12cdmm I don't know why these skits scared me, maybe I scared easily back then.
Stacy She wolf The other hand coming up from the bottom of the tv.
I've been trying to look for the one "hand sketch" that had two hands; one was bouncing a ping pong ball, and it ended with one crushing an egg (supposedly by accident) I felt so bad for that hand all covered in yolk....the sad music didn't help much, either..
The sketch with the wall has been found! And a really rare FIFTH sketch has been found as well! Now, who has ’em? Peace.
This and Capital I.
Don't think I ever saw this one. But then again I was about 2 when it came out so i probably wouldn't remember it.
I like to give this video a hand myself for a wonderful job that was.
This hand is so awesome
Still living?
The narrator sounds a lot like Skip Hinnant from "The Electric Company."
Sounds exactly like him, which is why he's identified right there under the video :-)
it is
In case I have studied it online on "Sesame Street", the latest date of this clip was on Thursday, January 22, 1981 (first-run); Thursday, July 23, 1981 (rerun).
+Thomas Schofield This one definitely debuted in 1969. I took if from my copy of Episode 7. Can't say for sure how long they played it, maybe into the late '70s as you mention, but the debut date is correct.
I was born in 1969. I remember this one from very early childhood.

Today,I just found out that the Classic 'Sesame Street' Hand Film 'One Hand Tickles the Other',Posted to youtube By AJ MACHETE so many years ago,has been deleted along with his account. I couldn't even save it for Myself, though I tried. The rare Hands 'Wall' film has not,or can't be posted. Now,all that there is of them, again,is just screencaps on muppet.wikia. I watched the Hand films together and often, and this is a disappointment. Every other Classic SS film is on youtube,it seems to Me. Just not these. The 'Wall' film is supposedly on HBO Max now? I don't even have HBO anymore. I was as surprised when the original 'Hand' film was deleted, along with that yt account, years ago. I don't know what AJ MACHETE did to see him go,and I'm sorry. But,If anyone who can could post 'Feather'/'One Hand Tickles the Other',I'd love to see it again. This youtube sucks...
I agree
I wonder whose hands that was.

What is the sound of one hand clapping?

I remember when I saw this on Sesame Street as a kid. I actually thought there has a gotta be a way to make a noise with one hand. I let it go for ages and then when I started enjoying sucking my thumb at age 15, I thought I finally found the answer. Only to realize soon after it was my mouth making the noise at the time. I've since not worried about it, and in all honesty, I rarely to this day make any noise when I suck my thumb.
It was like for me as a kid back then. watchibg a ga unknown. Ypung mans hands clap fastwr and faster. I thought. High school
Those are i Leonardo di caprios hands clapping
Not sure if this is supposed to be a joke, but I feel the need to clarify that Leo wasn't born until 1974. This was made in 1969 :-)
Nothing wrong with a guess
