4Kn compatibility with LSI SAS controllers

- In this video, I'm going to answer the question of 4kn compatibility with LSI IT mode HBA SAS controllers. Specifically, I'm going to test a HGST 8TB 4kn SAS HDD with 4 generations of LSI SAS controllers: the SAS2008, SAS2308, SAS3008, and SAS3408.
If you'd like to buy a pre-flashed ready-to-go LSI IT mode SAS HBA card from me, checkout my eBay store: ebay.to/3l4xlch

I think this cannot be generalised. I flashed a DELL PERC H310 card (2008 chip) into Dell HBA mode and also tried cross-flashing to LSI IT-Mode. Both times my 4Kn drives were NOT recognised.
Please note that there is difference between cards flashed in IT mode (Pass Through) vs Raid mode. As others mentioned it is listed that 2008, and 2018 cards do NOT support 4Kn drives. They do NOT support 4Kn drives in RAID mode. IT mode doesn't really look at the drives at all, that is why 4Kn drives worked in all these tests as they were on IT mode flashed cards (As stated in the description)
in Passthrough / IT mode it is up to the OS to be able to support the drives.
That's a very good point. the 2008/2108 chips with IR mode firmware or MegaRAID firmware will not support 4Kn. This video was only about HBA (or IT mode) firmware cards.

That's not yet all, the partition-tool is the wrong one too, infact the partition start at sector 1049 but with 4Kn must start at sector 256.
That's completely horrible because there are two error in one posistion, infact the partition on 512 start on 1048 and not on 1049, that' means... the partition tool is not for 4Kn. Parted assume that this drive is a 512e drive, not a 512 and nor a 4Kn.
There ist gptdfisk (tools) in Arch & Centos making the job right.
I have a bunch of those 8tb He drives. Love them. Working great with 9201-16i
I love HGST HDDs in general... even their older non-He drives were super reliable. I use to be a Seagate fan (waaay back in the days of SCSI Cheetahs), but they've lost their way and I almost exclusively use HGST now... (or the WD branded HGST)
@@ArtofServer Yeah I'm glad HGST hasn't gone SMR yet. But it's only a matter of time. I used to have 8TB Seagate SMR drives. The performance sucked. Sold them off and replaced with HGST.

I was looking for this info, Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
i find it funny when people are talking to a camera and ask " can you guys see that?" like there is any way the camera is gonna answer...
This was a fantastic video full of information
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching!

Does this mean that my lsi 9211-8i would supporrt 4kn if I update the firmware to p20? Everything I read says the 2008 cards don't support 4kn
as demonstrated...
In case someone else (or if the Author has a thought) viewing this has dealt with this, I have an 'LSI SAS3041e-HP SAS 3000 series 4port with 1064E' that works GREAT in windows 10 connecting to a 6TB SAS Drive I have. I bought a 4kn 6TB HGST drive to play with hoping I could get it to work. Connected the drive and in disk mgmt, received an 'incorrect function' error when trying to initialize it- same msg in diskpart. Found some detail about a 512 format so went into the LSI controller config and found an option to format 512. It completed really quickly and now my error in windows disk mgmt is 'data error (cyclic redundancy check). I have to be close...
Well I figured this out. If the Author pin above was in response to my question, thank you. I watched again and did not see anything to help me and in my setup though. I believe my issue was related to the default sector format the drive had - just not clear why win disk mgmt could not handle it, why a format would resolve before initialize, etc. I used WD's Hugo to complete a lengthy format. Once complete, windows 10 could initialize the disk without error and an msinfo32 check of the drive shows a sector size of 4096 compared to my many others (85TB combined total) of 512. Hope this helps someone dabbling with this.
Did you check through the expander for the next video?
sure! good idea!

Great Great Job, Any idea what "CAM status: CCB request completed with an error" means & how to troubleshoot on TrueNAS??? Thanks in advance
No idea
I'm pretty sure I have a enterprise ssd with 8k sectors on a h200 flashed to IT mode that works fine.
drive models please?
Thanks. If I bought the 9340 controller and put four of those hitachi drives into a standard atx tower case (no backplane) what kind of cable would work best?
depends on the type of drive...
@@ArtofServer SAS Drive like your video. Example HGST HUH728080AL4200
@@eddieyeetx then you need SAS cables with SFF-8643 (HBA) and SFF-8482 (SAS HDDs) connectors.
@@ArtofServer thanks. I ordered a card off your eBay. Appreciate your help.
My SAS 2008 card is not picking up my 4kn drives in IT mode
It's probably not a 4kn issue. I would explore other possibilities to see if you can figure out what it is. are the drives encrypted? is the SAS2008 running the latest firmware?
@@ArtofServer hey thanks for the reply the firmware is MPTFW-20.00.07.00-IT, I can see my supermicro enclosures so I know the HBA is talking to them, the drives were refurb bought on ebay so I don't know if they are encrypted and I have no way to direct connect them.
At first I like to thank you for this clear answer about 4kn drives and LSI (I was one of people who ask this question on ebay to you).
Do you have any idea about some limitation of combination 512/512e drives and 4kn drives in pool. I read somewhere that is not good idea to combine 512/512e drives and 4kn drivers in one hw raid array. Is this also true for sw raid/pools for example ZFS or UNRAID? Or can be done without issues?
That's a good question, and I don't have an answer for you. ZFS does try to align with the native sector size of the underlying devices, it's a parameter called ashift. But I'm not sure what it will do if devices with different native sector size are used. I don't have enough 4kn devices to test that scenario out, nor do I have 512n 8TB HDD to mirror with this one 4kn 8TB HDD... Actually, to come to think of it, what 512n and 4kn devices do you want to mix?
@@ArtofServerI have no spare 8TB 512n drives to test ZFS, but I manage to test UNRAID with 512n drives in pool and 4kn drive as parity drive and seems that it working. The pool was created correctly, speeds for parity rebuild was ok (~100MB/s), which is actualy max of read speed of rest HDD in pool. So I cannot say on 100% that is ok, but so far it working well.
@@pavelkristofik5269 Thank you for sharing your results!
@@ArtofServer My previouse comment, that 8TB is working fine, was for HP DL380e G8 with p420i (which should be lsi2308). But when I tryed it on Dell R720xd witch h310, than 8TB disk is not found by system (lsscsi did not show it). In iDRAC it see it as 900GB disk wich 512sector, which is not correct. Do you think that h310 works different than regular lsi2008. Which firmware you have? I have 20.12.0-0004. Can backplain be an issue here?
@@pavelkristofik5269 What kind of H310 card is it? The H310 mini? Or a regular PCIe H310? Have you tried updating the Dell firmware for the H310 you have? Or, is this one of my IT mode H310 mini cards?
The H310 (mini or PCIe card) should be functionally *capable* as any other SAS2008 based card. Notice I said *capable*, as the actual function depends on the firmware too. In my case, I use LSI firmware, not Dell. The LSI firmware I use for SAS2008 based cards is P20, or 20.00.07.00 IT mode firmware. With LSI firmware, I don't see a problem when directly connecting from HBA to 4Kn HDDs. The SAS2 expander is an interesting question though...
one more piece of information I need... can you tell me the exact model and brand of the 8TB HDD you are using that isn't detected?
Can you use a hp 12 gbs sas controller in a dell r720 server
I don't know, never tried it. If you do, let us know!
Where the heck is your eBay page, its gone and has been for over a month.....
